I was just wondering...How involved was Joey in writing the music for franks lyrics. Did he do any chord progressions and such or just solos, bridges, fills etc? And did Frank come up with some solos aswell?

Its always been a mystery to me cos on the albums it just says all songs written by black francis except blah... Surely that must just mean that he writes the lyrics, cos yeah he is amazing, and yeah he was a bit of a creative dictator but im sure he didnt write the drum beat and the bassline and joeys riffs

I think Frank would have done chords + lyrics. I reckon he takes the view (quite reasonably) that the songs can exist (as proven by numerous solo shows) on their own without a band backing them up...

It wouldn't have been too farfetched for Frank to write the parts for bass, drums and lead along with his own... Remember, the guy had background playing piano, drums, and bass along with guitar. I bet he didn't have 100% input, because I'm sure the other members had their own influence somewhat, but maybe at least 90.

Yeah I'd say that what it means when it says all songs by Black Francis is he came in with the skeleton of the songs, the chords, words and structure and then they went to town with it. Although I'm sure he'd have ideas for certain leads, etc.

when i saw frank black in san fransisco 1993,i think he introduced joey as "the defining sound of the pixies" (or did i hear that on a bootleg?). Anyway, in an interview he said that some of the songs were "jammed" out in rehearsals with the band - based on his ideas. Can't remember which Trompe le Monde song he refered to when he said that it was based on an idea he and joey had been messing around with since they went to university. |

Frank said they were 'totally' a band -- they jammed the basic chords he presented; he didn't write all the parts. |

There's a 'demo' version of Broken Face and I'm Amazed about, I downloaded them ages ago. I'm not sure but are they actually proper demos from before the songs were recorded or are they just random acoustic versions? My point is on those so called 'demos' Frank hums the bass line and either plays the guitar riff himself or sings the solo... If they are original demos that Frank did before the rest of the band rehearsed then it would seem he did most of the songs... |

I think that U-mass, the riff at lest, had been kicking around since the college days.
