so i saw the first episode of this tonight, anybody else?
if not, there are 6 more episodes, 9pm on your local PBS station.
the first one was pretty good, i got a bit more familiarity with some of the old blues men. i went and ordered a Son House disc, and a Bukka White disc (even though Bukka wasn't really mentioned in that episode, doubtless he will be at some point anyway.)
in the mean time i'm listening to De Stjil, with its lovely cover of Death Letter and other bluesy songs. plus as a birthday present i bought myself a ticket to see the stripes on november 28th. |

I was going to see the White Stripes in Norfolk this month but the date got postponed. I'll definately be checking out this series though, two of my favorite things in one show, can't go wrong.

I unfortunately wasn't able to catch the first episode of this show. What songs did they play by Son House?
Hmm, wow - I just noticed that Wim Wenders does the second episode - I will definitely not be missing that one!!! Have you seen any of his movies?
Ebb, if you are liking the Son House, have you already taken a shine to Muddy Waters or Lead Belly? You would probably also really like Blind Lemon Jefferson. As for current musicians, if you don't already know about them) I would highly recommend a couple of individuals on Fat Possum records, http://www.fatpossum.com/ - T Model Ford, RL Burnside...
Went a little loco with the suggestions there - just excited to talk to other blues fans...Thanks for the head's up on this show!

haven't seen any wim wenders movies, nope.*
i do of course like those guys but i don't own any CDs yet. i'm going to try to pick up a cd by one classic bluesman at least every time i buy a cd for a while. hopefully i can build up a nice collection.
modern blues i'm very trepedatious about. it usually falls into one of two categories;
- word for word, note for note covers and far too tight, and by-the-numbers originals.
or
- boring, unenergetic messiness.
which is not to say there aren't good people out there, i just don't feel like dedicating the time to finding them. though, i guess i could take your suggestions and see what i think of them.
edit: * - and i'll be missing his episode because i'm going out for dinner tonight (my birthday.) |

Trust me, R L Burnside has the hellfire in him, and T-Model Ford is a real character. I agree, I hate most new blues, it's almost like it loses it's soul through too many iterations of itself.

The first Blues episode had "John the Revelator" playing over the credits.
I enjoyed the first episode and having a different director for each episode should keep it interesting. I think tonight's episode will highlight (or interview) Beck a little bit. |

Great song. I really like Joseph Spence's "John the Revelator".
Missed the first half hour last night, like an idiot. I hear Nick Cave and Lou Reed were in it as well (Wim Wenders puts them in a lot of his movies). I didn't see anything about Beck - I must have missed that part too. Maybe I'll win the lottery and then I will be able to afford the DVD collection....
I've got to go get some Skip James, and most especially, Blind Willie Johnson. A-MAZ-ing!

Has anyone watched anymore episodes of this? It's great. Last night's movie was more a film less a documentary about a young boy that gets kidnapped by his uncle and taken through the South and taught about the blues. There's a really creepy scene where he sees a ghost at the crossroads where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. The one the night before with BB King and Bobby Rush was cool too, BB King seems like he might very well be the nicest man in the world.

I liked the one w/BB King - he is the coolest guy, really - what a real smile he's got. I had no idea he was the first black radio dj. I also had grown used to hearing his more recent musical style - his early stuff rocks me hard. I will be buying quite a bit of music because of this show. Bobby Rush was a hoot.
I didn't very much get into the episode last night - it was too far removed and self-conscious for my tastes - I would have preferred more on the musicians and their lives, rather than some (IMHO) rather lame acting to loosely cobble together a story of the blues effecting someone's life - I had to stop watching, .... but to each their own. I missed out on that crossroads scene.

Yes, RL Burnside is incredible. If he would just make more records with the blues explosion and keep the freaking vocal mic away from Spencer, it would be one of my favorite bands in the world. Junior Kimbrough is incredible as well. |

i watched about 10 minutes of last night's episode before i turned it off, for much the same reasons as apl4eris.
i'm quite disappointed in this series, actually. there are a lot of great stories out there but they aren't being told. BB King is a much more interesting and layered individual than that episode even came close to hinting at. it seems like they are afraid to even seem to portray the artists in a "bad light", by talking about who they really are/were and the lives they really lead.
it's sad. it could have been great but i don't even know if i'm going to bother with the last three episodes. |
