please solve an argument i'm currently having with my co-worker..
is the expression "i hope you can see the forest for the trees" supposed to mean, don't get hung up on small details but see the "larger picture"? or the opposite? ie. don't just see the big picture, but recognize the smaller details involved?
this is a mystery.. |

I always understood it to mean "don't be myopic", so yeah, what you said...don't get hung up on the small details.
Did this argument come from talking about the song "headache", by any chance?

I had always heard it as "can't see the forest for the trees", which amounts to the same as what you said but definitely points to a meaning of seeing the particulars while failing to discern the general. |

We use that expression in engineering all the time, basically it means don't get caught up in the small details as you said, floop.

i think the opposite is just as important though: you shouldn't be blinded by the vague, big picture of things.. it's important to appreciate the smaller details too.. know what i mean? |

Has anyone heard of the band called "Forest for the Trees?" Dave, you seem to like Beck, he did some music with them a few years back.
