OK, the last of the three Scottish gigs I've had the good fortune to attend on this tour...
Me and my brother got right down at the front, 3 or 4 feet away from The Man for the whole gig -- cool! They played Chip Away Boy as an encore (nice surprise), and the band was particularly tight. The main Pixies tunes for this tour are Cactus, Velouria and Caribou, all very rocking (Cactus is quite different to the Pixies' version -- more of a bad-ass rock-out, whereas Caribou could easily have been the Pixies if you weren't looking; both fine by me).
The gigs seem quite a bit shorter than last time they were here (I'm sure they were doing over 2 hours before), but still clocking in at around an hour and a half, so no complaints there!
Rich Gilbert was in full Austin Powers dance thrash mode near the end when his guitar strap came off and his guitar crashed to the floor, but he did save himself pretty well -- played it strapless, then changed for another that he managed to play strapless until the end of the song too (I can't do that standing up!).
Weirdly, the venue staff cut off access to where the merchandise table was set up after the gig, so we couldn't go buy t-shirts, etc, which was the only sucky point of the night -- everything else went really well: getting past the door security with a minidisc recorder (too busy searching too many people so waved us through), got right in at the front of the stage, got blasted with a great gig, a taxi as soon as we got outside, and what turned out, on first in-car listen, to be a pretty decent recording of the whole gig apart from the last song-and-a-half from the encore (disc ran out) -- hopefully some of it might be worth uploading somewhere (I can at least post a set-list in a day or two if no-one beats me to it). I got some pictures, too, but they all turned out blurry and psychedelic due to the low-light situation -- might salvage and post the, uh, 'least worst'...
Overall, a fantastic end to a (wait for it) 'three day party' (groan), following Frank Black and the Catholics around Scotland. Good work, Frank and the band, and those down south have got much to look forward to.
What a weekend!

maybe the shows are shorter because they have a substitute drummer?

Gigs are usually short quite short at the Garage... think it's because of the club afterwards. Getting too old for jumping round at gigs, but what you going to do when the guy opens with Velvety?? Frank looked chirpy, good crowd, good sound... As far as I can remember, they played:
Headache Abstract Plain I want rock n roll All my ghosts Bullet Hermaphraditos Robert Onion Velvety Jane the queen of love Chip away boy California bound Nadine Everything is new Horrible day Massif Centrale When will happiness find me again Manitoba The snake Cactus Caribou Velouria Some cover version...
Might have missed a couple but there you go.

The shows were shorter on all 3 nights compared to last time, but they gave us far more than we deserved on the last tour anyway! I guess it could be because of Joe K, but he's a perfectly capable feller (fun to watch too -- he looks like he should be in Oliver Twist, and he's clearly loving the shows) and they played enough different songs on each night that it doesn't seem to be due to a lack of songs learned on his part or anything. They just decided to play slightly shorter sets I think (but still plenty long). Not a complaint, of course, just an observation!
The best of the three performance-wise was probably Aberdeen; although I had a pretty crappy view for much of it, they played much louder and harder, played slightly more obscure songs (Billy Radcliffe, Freedom Rock, etc), Frank was more talkative and looked cooler and more ROCK!!! in black t-shirt (think of the Head On video and you're almost there) rather than the 'western star' shirt, and he kept turning his guitar up louder and louder towards the end.
The Garage for me was more of a chance to enjoy the overall gig in a relatively relaxed manner, observe how they played, etc (remarkably un-crushed right at the front!).

Man, that rules that they played Billy Radcliffe. Also, putting Velouria and Caribou into the set is god damn kickass. You lucky bastards.

Hey, V, I was literally directly in front of Frank for the whole gig -- it was the rows just behind where all the action was happening. We didn't have to fight to survive as much as expected. And don't knock Serafin -- their performance allowed my brother to get the Minidisc levels just right...

A four star review in the Scotsman newspaper, 30th September, 2003:
Frank Black and The Catholics
Camilla Pia
Frank Black and The Catholics**** THE GARAGE, GLASGOW
WE’VE all seen members of seminal bands make the most dreadful mistakes - think of Macca and those bagpipes, or Sting’s middle-of-the-road hippy babble. Some critics have argued that Frank Black, frontman of the legendary Pixies, has marred an influential career in a similar way with his most recent musical incarnation, yet on Sunday night, despite strong rumours that he is to reform his old band, the master of spiky rock proved his current set-up is a ferocious force to be reckoned with.
Backed by the four Catholics - more than a mere accompaniment with their "just stepped out of a Greenwich Village jazz band" style and top-notch musicianship - he wowed a devotional crowd with his dark and gritty country thrash, and even threw in a couple of Pixies numbers for good measure.
Although Caribou and Velouria made for a saunter down memory lane, the Frank Black and the Catholics live experience was enjoyable in its own right. There was plenty of chemistry and enough infectious new tracks to show that, if Frank does get back with the old bunch, the Catholics were more than just a half-hearted stopgap.

I think that the crowd were more into his solo stuff this time round. Got the feeling that when he played King Tuts for Dog in the Sand half the folks there just came because of the Pixies tunes... Did anyone see them play the Garage on the Cult of Ray tour? Thought they were really on fire that night (Bad wicked World played) Still got the setlist somewhere... |

agreed, esp with the way the entire crowd started jumping up and down and singing along :)
