I am a bit tired and emotional, but I thought that I would share some quick thoughts before bed. It was great (surprise), I spoke to Frank and the very friendly and approachable Dave McCaffrey, and I was blown away by the gig.
The setlist:
Cactus Velvety I want rock'n'roll Hermaphroditos Nadine How you went so far Caribou New House of the Pope Bullet Robert Onion Jane, the Queen of Love Headache Suffering Everything is new Cold Heart of Stone California Bound Southbound Bevy Whisky in your shoes Black Rider When Will HAppiness find me again? Horrible Day Massif Centrale Black Letter Day
ENCORE:
Velouria Fare Thee Well (Burl Ives)
Other initial thoughts: Joe Kidd did not make a single mistake. The band were really tight. For some obscure reason, Joe and Dave McC were wearing flat caps, as if they were auditioning for a kitchen sink drama. There was no apparent setlist, they decided songs as they were going along. The versions of Suffering and Black Letter Day were savage - Frank is hurting alright. The only negative thing was that the audience wanted extra encores, and when they stopped after the second encore there was a clamour for more. However, poor Frank et al had to pack everything up and wheel it up a major incline (Edinburgh, I'm afraid) - this took awhile, and the club was due to start. I will write a more considered opionion tomorrow, but it was a great night -the assault of the first five songs will stay with me for a long time, and thanks to Frank And Dave McC for being so friendly.

Sounds like a perfect night, Andy. Admit it, you were wearing the waders, weren't you? No wonder they liked you. : P

I was at this one too. Joe K looked a bit lost before starting each song, but got right into it with enthusiasm and performed brilliantly. He kept staring at me and grinning like a big kid. The flat cap made him look like one of those kids in Bugsy or something!

it was great ! me and my wife stood (stupidly !) by the coke machine and the slot machine, we eventually moved around to the corner where the lady was who was selling the shirts. the gig rocked hard and was brilliant - especially as its over 4 years since i've last seen a FB gig! roll on next sunday when i'm in sheffield !

Incase y'all didn't know, Frank dropped into the Bow Bar after the Edinburgh show for a few drinks and a chat with fans. Seems a nice bloke.
A word on the band's 'flat cap' dress code - couldn't stop thinking about this all the way through the gig!

I got mine after the gig - mainly cos I got there late and failed to spot the merch. table till D. Phillips was packing away.
So weird being at a gig past 11 PM - so accustomed to having panic & paranoia about missing the last train home!
So through one thing and another I ended up waiting outside the tour bus like some kind of freaking sad ass groupie and for a while I was thinking "screw this, its cold my feet hurt & just what the buggery bollocks AM I doing hanging around just for a photo & autograph?"
But then I got yakking to Rich & Dave & then met Charles which, like MADE the trip for me so I guess I am over that...
Envious of you people following the tour now but needs must...!

A review in the Edinburgh Evening News, 29/9/03:
Frank's back in black
MUSIC REVIEW
DAVID POLLOCK
Frank Black and the Catholics, Liquid Room ***
NOT that we’re suggesting for a second anyone could take the place of the sadly-departed Johnny Cash - but if you’re looking for another mystery Man in Black to fill the void, you could do a lot worse than listen to Frank Black and his Catholics.
An interest in monochrome fashion statements isn’t the only connection between both icons, as there’s also something of the nameless Wild West outlaw about semi-legendary ex-Pixies frontman Black.
In stark contrast to the Pixies, in fact, much of his solo material veers on to an almost rockabilly tangent. Couple that with a taste in florally-patterned Western-style shirts, and he and his band could almost resemble the Byrds.
The titles of Southbound Bevy and Whisky In Your Shoes also suggest a round of moonshine-soaked debauchery, yet it’s the occasional addition of God’s own instrument - the pedal steel guitar - which confirms his Southern fixation.
Except Black’s sound has always been bled through a murky, punk-rock filter and it seems old habits do indeed die hard.
Witness, for example, the way he maintained surly, tight-lipped concentration throughout the show. Or the intros to some of the songs, which consisted of nothing more than a brief single-chord grind.
The real treat was that both styles merged seamlessly and the capacity crowd voiced their approval with a response that bordered on the devotional.
Many of them are still living in the slipstream of the hugely-influential Pixies, of course, who are arguably more popular than ever these days. Yet the cheers for, say, the apocalyptic thunder of Black Rider or the bitterly charging thrash of Black Letter Day were born of pure enjoyment rather than simple loyalty.
Along with Hermaphroditos, the resigned yet euphoric newie Horrible Day was yet another highlight. Of his solo material, that is, because the receptions for Pixies favourites Cactus and encore, Velouria, were way above and beyond any other cheer of the evening.
What these songs proved, in all fairness, was Black’s elder statesman status. Where some artists on the verge of 40 are quite happy to trade on old glories those precious few who really do "mean it" just can’t stop trying to bring something special to everything they do.
Frank’s edges might be dulling just a bit but he most definitely occupies that latter category and the beaming smile he broke for the audience right at the end, shows he was pleased with this particular effort.
In the end, the biggest current mystery about Black - that the Pixies will be reforming next year, according to rumour - still stands. But idle speculation shouldn’t have been allowed to detract from Frank’s current muse in any event, as he demonstrated that the outlaw’s bounty the fans still place on his head is worth every penny.

There is one problem with it: the word "semi-legendary".

"Newie" is a slang word used quite a lot here, as indeed is "oldie", or "nooner"
