If anyone's reading this who knows, can you please tell me what Fall records are most worth finding? I have friends who tell me that there are real good one's and real terrible ones. Thanks in advance. |

It really depends on your mood sometimes but, these are ones I like the most....as for availability...dunno: 'Dragnet', 'Live at the Witch Trials', 'Grotesque (After the Gramme)' ...and if you can get your hands on live albums....they're pretty good too. |

Not much of a Fall connoisseur, but "Hex Induction Hour" and "The Wonderful and Frightening World of..." are both pretty good. The former is noisier, the latter catchier,... both being repetitious and featuring a singer that can barely sing. |

Oh my...The Fall are one of my all time favorite bands. I own every Fall album, and I would say that they are one of the most consistent bands of all time, nearly every studio album they did is highly worthwhile. However--there is a lot of crap in Fall bins, because of record compnay problems lots of lo-fi demo stuff gets released and packaged as an actual album. So--avoid anything on the RECIEVER label (unless it's Light User Syndrome, a great album). Mostly look for stuff on Cog-Sinister.
This Nation's Saving Grace is usually a recommendable starting point, as it's a perfect mix of their noisy avant garde side and their catchy side.
Hex Enduction Hour is probably their best album, but it's intense and might scare you away.
A lot of Fall fans I know started with Perverted by Language, a nearly perfect album. It features Mark E Smith at his best vocally and lyrically.
Dragnet and Grotesque are also both brilliant, but very raw and lo-fi (before it was fashionable), so I'm not sure if that would bother you or not. |

I lost count of my Fall collection about 15 years ago. It's about 5 linear inches in my LP racks, plus loads of CDs and singles. They're all worth having. I agree with Itchload that "This Nation's Saving Grace" is a good safe place to start. But my favorite albums are from the period prior to that when they were at their noisiest-- "Slates", "Hex Enduction Hour", "Room to Live" and "Perverted By Language". Some of the most fantastic anti-commercial racket you'll ever hear.
Once you have a stack of Fall albums, you can start your Can collection! That way you'll see where Mark was coming from.
"Victoria" is a Kinks song. Like a lot of Kinks songs, it's been covered by many bands. |

interloper - you might wanna try GEMM.com too - sometimes you can get a real good deal, better than ebay, even. Or musicstack.com.
I'm not too hip on the Fall - I do remember being stuck on a song for ages - I think it was them - back in the mid-eighties? something about "curious orange"?. Am I on crack?

Can't imagine Mark E. singing, "I was born / lucky me / in a land / that I love"

For whatever it's worth, that's more than right about Can. I hate to distract the question about The Fall, but this is a special circumstance in my mind. Everyone talks about bands being "different," but when I first started getting into Can it did something to the way I think about music. If you have the time or energy, try to find out a bit about how the band operated, I think it's very interesting. You won't just see where Mark was coming from, you'll see where a whole lot of approaches came from. They're one of my favourite bands in the history of all-time. Just make sure you give them a chance; one listen will not do it. Everyone, though, comes around to Can eventually.......EVERYONE!!!

Yeah, Can are great...and what Can did to you The Fall did to me. But Can are an amazing band. MES even does a great Damo Suzuki impression on "I Am Damo Suzuki".
Tago Mago, Ege Bamyashi and Future Days are pretty much flawless (for Can stuff). |

I'm at a loss for words whenever someone asks me what The Fall or Can sound like. It's like trying to describe a color that's not in the spectrum. |

I know exactly what you mean, but the best part of being a music fan/ambassador is pushing a band like this on people and seeing if they decide they get it or not. Right now, my buddy is borrowing Tago Mago and Unlimited Edition from me and he talks about how he doesn't know why he keeps listening to them, but he can't stop. At first he was pretty lukewarm about Can, but I think I've got a convert on my hands now! It's the greatest feeling a music nerd can have. Bands like this are the type I don't really have to get in the mood to listen to, I can just throw them on because I know it'll always be worth it.
