hi there, i'm new, i'm 21 and live in France. I'm a big Tom Waits fan and after years of playing pixies songs during parties I'm just starting to wonder, what did those guys do despite "where is my mind?" lol I saw a video of Frank playing Tom Waits "the black rider" and it was fun. also i was surprised to hear the pixies live version of the "lady in the radiator song" originally from the Eraserhead movie by David Lynch. That song is all i had remembered from the movie lol.
so the actual question is what is song Caribou about? does it mean something? |

| Early Pixies songs tended to have sort of fragmented slightly surreal lyrics. Many of their songs weren't necessarily about one thing, though a lot of the lyrics would be inspired by different events that Frank would percieve and then kind of jumbled together in a song. In the early days usually religion, sex, and death were big lyrical themes...hence the "REPENT!" line of Caribou. Great song, pretty mythical sounding. |

He said that in the days of the Pixies yeah. At the same time, he always seemed to have at least a slight inspiration for every song when asked about it.
His lyrics have slowly changed though, and his lyrics are certainly more "meaningful" these days. |

| Caribou is one of the greatest songs (my nick was caribou but it was already used) On the early days, on the fallen shelter session kim does some lyrics, they're pretty good, a bit scary. Does anyone know what she says? By the way great cover dude!! |

didnt black francis used to say that he would come up with chord progs. first then basically say some syllables that fitted 'em, and take the words from there.

"It gets into a bit of animism, maybe a little of reincarnation. My focus was the hunt, the caribou. It was good to play - very loud, with a nice little triplet swing going on." (Frank Black in SELECT, October 1997)
Hope this helps

thanks :) well i want to start my first band this year, i've been playing guitar for 5 years and sings for one year, but never played in a band, i like so many kind of music i don't manage to focus on one type. the one type i would like to focus on, solo folk/blues type, is the more difficult to master for me.

it's the first time someone says that :) well curiously my voice change from song to song, i don't get it. when i would sing some dave matthews, radiohead or jeff buckley my voice would sound a bit like theirs without me even trying (except for tom waits, i tried the whiskie/cigarettes regim but i still need more training), it's just the fact of being used to listen to the original songs i guess. but this time is the first time i really sing without trying to sound at all like the origial singer, i don't know the song caribou very well so i thought it would be great to find my own voice and not sound like someone else, and curiously my voice sounded a bit a la eddie vedder i think. i don't listen to pearl jam actually, one of my friend made me listen to them a couple of time like 3 months ago, and this morning when i heard my voice singing i was like "oh, it sounds like the pearl jam guy". strange... |

Lost2003, CARIBOU was one of the first PIXIES songs I ever heard, and I still think it is their most mystical (along with SILVER, but for some reason, 90% of members here don't like SILVER). My take on CARIBOU is about a human who has realized his reincarnation from beast to man...free of cognizant consciousness suddenly burdoned by conscience. Normally we idealize the freedom and awesomness of the possibility of becoming our favorite member of the animal kingdom if reincarnation is the avenue ahead. But never have we stopped to view the animal dreading the possibility of becoming human, because as an intelligent species we are too 'smart' to believe a non-human earthbound form may indeed possess a cosmic intellegence. The memories or feelings of the caribou are surfacing in the human character. This character later on resurfaces in THE SAD PUNK. It's the same twist Frank Black takes on in ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER...the idea that the emotional spine comes not from the human victims suffering the horrible plight of a grand scale flood, but rather the anxiety ridden water itself searching desperatly for its mother ocean. Anyhow, don't know if this helps...but this is what the song describes to me. Thats the wonder and beauty of Black Francis/Frank Black. His writing is so crafted in non-detail (but rooted in familiarity) that it allows for open interpretation. He allows us as listeners to join in with his creativity.
