Has anyone here heard A Perfect Circle's new album Thirteenth Step? It's got a very nice, ambient flowing quality to it...good to drive to, or just to space out. A bit heavier than Frank, but...
So far, my favorite songs on it are "A Stranger" and their cover of "The Nurse Who Loved Me." I doubt anyone's even heard the original version of the latter, but it is by Failure, who were a really good band back in the mid-nineties. Sadly, they're no longer together; Ken Andrews from the band is in a group called "Year of the Rabbit." Anyway, James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins is now apparently on board with A Perfect Circle.
Odd to be talking A Perfect Circle on FB.net...

Don't know the first thing about this band or disc, but since I went directly from this thread to the following review, which echoes your opinion, here it is:

A big Step By DARRYL STERDAN Winnipeg Sun
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THIRTEENTH STEP A Perfect Circle (Virgin/EMI) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can you tell the difference between a side project and a supergroup? Easy -- just compare A Perfect Circle's 2000 debut Mer de Noms with their new followup Thirteenth Step.
The first disc found bizarro Tool frontman Maynard Keenan teaming up with band guitar tech Billy Howerdel, Vandals drummer Josh Freese and a few indie-rockers to create a sound that fused goth, industrial, prog, ethnic exotica and sludgy, bludgeoning metal. And it was good.
But not as good as Thirteenth Step, which finds Howerdel, Keenan and Freese welcoming former Marilyn Manson bassist Jeordie (Twiggy Ramirez) White into their Circle and recruiting ex-Smashing Pumpkins axeman James Iha as a live sidekick.
More importantly, this powerful and textured 50-minute album due in stores Tuesday finds the group hitting their musical stride, striking a near-flawless balance between their various influences and crafting doom-laden. visceral tunes that feel more like live performances than Mer de Noms' studio constructs.
If you missed the band's recent local show, console yourself with this disc and wait for their next step forward.

I got it, but haven't listened to it enough to give my opinion. I do like what I've heard though. I think "Mer de Noms" is an excellent album.
It's really hard for me to get into APC cover of "The Nurse Who Loved Me" because I'm so used to Failure's. Failure is an amazing band and it sucks they broke up. Year of the Rabbit is cool, but there is something about Failure that makes them so great. "Fantastic Planet" is one of my favorite albums ever.

I haven't listened to it yet, I should though, I love Maynard. I hardly listened to the first one either, though I did catch them at Edgefest here. I can really get into Tool though, anybody have any comparisons? |

Hey Proverbial Cereal
I have the only three Failure albums that I know of in existence.
I like APC's cover of "the Nurse Who Loved Me." Derek, did you ever hear the Replicants? It's got Ken Andrews from Failure, Greg Edwards in some songs, and Chris Pittman who I believe has worked with Tool. It's even got Maynard James Keenan singing lead vocals on "Silly Love Songs." Justincase you don't know, they did a whole bunch of cover songs, everything to the Cars to Pink Floyd to Neil Young. I thought it was cool, because they covered some songs by bands that I had never listened to, and I thought it would be cool to hear what the original versions sound like. They opened up alot of doors to other music, because they had air play and a younger audience. Maybe they did that intentionally; I dunno. Anyway, if you haven't heard them, I'd check 'em out. Anything with Ken Andrews on vocals can't be all bad.
Carolynanna, I love Tool probably a little bit more than APC. (I don't like Opiate too much.) I'd say that Maynard's vocal capabilities get a pretty even range singing in heavy stuff like most of Tool's music, and the softer sound of APC.

I have the Replicants CD. It's very cool indeed. I found it used for $1.99.

Hey, I heard that APC does a cover of Ashes to Ashes but I couldn't find it. Anyone heard this? and? I also heard that they do some sort of Ozzy/Cure cover called something like Diary of a Love Story, is this true? |

Okay screw you guys! ;) I found the Diary of a Lovesong, it just makes me want to listen to the Cure. The Ashes to Ashes cover didn't download though, still curious. |
