I saw them play last year, complete with the animals in costume and the lead singer covered in fake blood. Was very educational. |

I think thier great. I love the Soft Bulletin(I've been meaning to get more of thier stuff, Race for the Prize really got me into them), I have one of thier concerts recorded on video Ramona where your man has fake blood all over his face as well and he really loves hitting his gong!, don't know if it's the same one you were at. They have an album with two records(or more, I think?) that your meant to play at the same time to listen to it! and I think they recorded an album in a car park? They did a cover of Kylie Minouge's, Can't Get You Out of My Head on a covers show on English T.V., is that a single or anything? Thier such a cool kooky band.

your referring to zaireeka which consists of 4 albums that you are supposed to play at the same time. i always thought the idea was pretty rediculous but then iwas reading about people who have listening parties where they bring together 4 boomboxes and listen to the cd together becuase its unlikely that a single person would have 4 cd players. seems like thatd be a pretty cool thing to do once. the soft bulletin is really awesome and their new one is good as well. ill probably get another cd by them but some of their earlier stuff is a lot harder to get into. oh and the kylie minogue cover isnt a single its off the Flight Test EP which includes other covers like Knives Out by Radiohead

I saw Flaming Lips recently in Bristol, England, the night before I returned to China. They were pretty good although I'd not really heard any of their stuff before I saw them.... which was a pity really as I didn't enjoy the gig as much as I would have done had I heard their stuff. I have since bought Soft Bulletin which is a good album, my mate has been promising to send me their latest one as he says its great, but Ive yet to recieve it.
The lead singer did the blood thing and there were also people dressed as animals on stage..... I just wish I'd listened to their stuff before th gig.

woohoo OKC June 9th...bring it on home!!!
I've been a long time fan of both Frank / Pixies and the Flaming Lips. I guess it's because I <3 UFO musik.

the wierd thing about flaming lips is that i hear they use a lot of prerecorded stuff at their concerts, like coynes guitar parts are prerecorded for some reason

I miss their drummer. I like the last two albums, but I think the sloppiness worked better with a real drummer. The drum machines just exaggerate their bad rhythm playing.
His vocals have gotten better though. Me thinks a bit of pitch correction perhaps.
I think "Clouds Taste Metallic" is one of their best and I don't understand why the last two albums have gotten considerably more press than the previous 3 or 4. They're all the same caliber as far as I'm concerned, maybe it's because the last two are less noisy and less bent on irritation.
I had "Zareeka" and tried to import all the songs into Pro-Tools so I could mix stereo tracks out of the 4 CD's. Unfortunately, when the Lips discovered that no two CD players play at exactly the same speed, they neglected to mix / master the CD's to a master digital clock so I would've had to sync everything by hand. (and yes, I'm a big nerd. I don't even have enough friends to have a 4 boombox party!)

well the softbulletin has a lot of live drum stuff, and i agree that the drums alone makes me like soft bulletin more than the newest one. if you listen to the beggining of "thank you jack white, for the fiber optic jesus that you gave me" from the flight test EP you can hear wayne coyne talk and he talks really low. so im guessing the reason his singing will go out of tune in earlier stuff is becuase hes constantly singing in falsetto and hadnt really perfected ityet.

Well, the bachground vocals on Bugged are definitely pitch corrected, so we know they have one at their disposal. I don't have a problem with it if it's used as an effect, or is subtle. Most bands these days just send the vocals through the box instead of only spot treating the bad notes and I think it's unlistenable.

I love alot of the Flaming Lips stuff, although I just really started to check them out last December. I really like their over-stated pageantry. |

i just saw em a few weeks ago, for the second time. they are definitely in the upper upper echelon of live shows i've seen. fake blood, animal suits, confetti, perfectly edited film projection.. like he said at this last show, they're shows are kind of like big, crazy birthday parties - even though they have a lot of songs about death..
i think it's funny how they've gone from being this almost novelty/experimental act to writing some seriously poignant, straightforward songs.. Do You Realize? is the best song of last year, in my humble opinion...

The CoM trailer is really weird. |

They played that song first at their concert, and I cried. It sums up basically everything I believe in. Lovely. |

i usually skip over tracks 4-7.. unless i'm just chillin' and in the mood for that kind of stuff. i hate to say it, but those tracks just feel like filler to me (ego trippin included).. which is why, though Yoshimi has the brilliant "do you realize?" and others.. i stand by the opinion that Soft Bulletin is their best album.. song for song.

My fav off Yoshimi is probably the track Are You a Hypnotist? barely beating out It's Summertime.
I also liked the whole "cyborg/computer evolving into human emotions" theme, but could skip the morbid "ten-year old" fascination with death at the end. |

I agree, "Clouds" is a great album and fully stands up to the last two. One of my alltime favorite Lips tunes is Evil will Prevail. |

Clouds Taste Metallic is my favourite Lips album...the last 2 particularly are great - Evil Will Prevail and Bad Days....my 2nd favourite band behind you-know-who...Guy Who got a Headache is classic as well
I got into the lips via soft bulletin but my favourite albums now would be Hit To Death In The Future Head and Clouds... |

I think that he plans to start finishing it up shortly after this tour ends. Wayne's been working on this for a long time now. haha
In fact I have a Great Martian Santa postcard from '98.
There was an art show of all of Wayne's stuff here (in OKC) a few weeks ago, and they had an even larger santa painting that even cooler.
I think my favorite painting from the exhibit was the wall size artwork for Oh My Gawd!!!
as far as the movie goes though...I'm dying to see Steve from Blues Clues part.

For someone who has not ever heard any of their music, what would you recomend be the first 3 albums that I buy. Also, what are some other good bands you guys are listening to?

I've only heard Soft Bulletin, but thats definately worth buying. Ive heard that Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is also very very good.
Stuff I am currently listening to.... Hmm,other than FB and Pixies there are Throwing Muses (University), Neil Young (Harvest), Stephen Malkmas (first album)...... a good band worth listening to is Alabama 3. The released an album called 'Exit on Cold Harbour Lane' back in 97/98, which is a mixture country / acid / techno music. Its a little bizarre and they sing about fucked up stuff, but it is a great album. They are the people that did the theme tune to the Sopranos.... definately worth a listen.
War....... Its Fantastic |
