Yes I have. Hawk is a little after my time. We used to worship Alva, though. Bow to the king...

A year younger than Frank-- I turned 37 last month.

This movie didn't change my life-- in fact, it sucked: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076721/
But I saw it anyway, because when I was 12 I'd have watched paint dry if it'd been painted by Tony Alva.

I never skated, but my husband did - mid eighties, in gradeschool and h.s. (in Louisville, KY) - he still has a screwed-up knee from when he tore his ACL when he was 13 and skated with the damn injury unmended for 10 freakin years.
One instance I will always remember is when one of our friends skated up to a police car at a stoplight (from a district they were pissed at for good reason), ollied onto the trunk, and spraypainted "FUCK" in black on the back windshield. And, he got away with it. Punk. Rock.
What did you guys think of the documentary "Dogtown and Zboys"? |

if that's true, that IS pretty punk rock. that's like a parody of punk rock.
yeah, we never spraypainted "fuck you" on cop cars.. but we did engage in our share of mischevious behavior.. breaking the law from time to time (mostly trespassing)..
i was going to mention "Dogtown and Zboys" to BLT. you seen it?
i saw it in the theatre for a special screening where most of the original dogtowners were at (i actually live in what used to be called "dogtown" on the border of Venice and Santa Monica).. it was pretty cool. if you have any interest in skateboarding (especially the early formation of how it really got started - w/ Tony Alva and those fellas), it's well worth watching.
even if never skated, it's interesting as a documentary on culture and (especially if you live around here), the history of Venice Beach..
rent it on DVD tonight http://www.sonyclassics.com/dogtown/ |

Yes, I saw the Dogtown movie in Pasadena last year. It was like meeting all those guys that everyone read and talked about when I was a kid. Fantastic. Then my friend got the DVD and I watched it a couple more times.
I didn't know any of the Dogtown boyz. I grew up in Hollywood and Eagle Rock and never went to the west side. I was a lame skater anyway-- I would have been too intimidated to hang with those dudes. But I did go to the skateboard championships (as a spectator, of course) at the Long Beach Arena when Alva set the long jump record by jumping a bunch of barrels. There weren't any half-pipes or anything. It was all the lame kind of stuff (Bruce Logan-style freestyle, no vertical) they portrayed the Z-Boys rebelling against in the movie.
I still have my first board-- a Logan Earth Ski (Bruce Logan model). I think it's made of solid oak or alder. It doesn't have the trucks or wheels. I got mugged when I was 12 a couple kids took my skateboard. The cops caught them a week later. The LAPD gave me back the wheels and trucks but kept the board for a while as evidence. By the time I got it back, I'd already bought another board. So the Logan still has the police evidence tag on it.

Yeah, it is true - I just realized that might have come across like some kind of tall tale second-hand bragging or something. I should clarify that this guy has always been a total nut - he used to sometimes walk out of his house in the morning not realizing he was totally naked - but he's pretty cool all the same. He also tried to skate off of his 2nd story roof. Once. Louisville had a great scene for skaters back in the eighties thru about 1993, as well as an incredible music scene, both of which severely deteriorated in the mid-to-late nineties, but I am proud of my flailing and pitiful little hometown on the river, because a few years ago? they built a GIANT free skate park, and they hosted the X Games at least once (apparently even Mr. Hawk was pretty happy with the place). The only skateboarding I ever did was, predictably, like a wussy girl up and down the street when I was about 12 - no tricks - and playing the Tony Hawk video game. FUN! Personally, I *really* enjoy watching street skating - improvisation with the concrete jungle is a beauty to behold - although I could watch Hawk attack a halfpipe for hours. I also really enjoyed Dogtown and Zboys - the way they were able to capture the culture, lifestyle, and the mindframe of those guys is amazing. That kind of urban commeraderie in a shared passion for excellence reminds me of the breakdancers during the NY recession - totally rare gems shining in the rubble. |

It's pretty obvious he was a skateboarder, even if you don't remember him.

Thanks floop - I'm flattered. Yep - 3. But the oldest is only a freshman in college, and I'm afraid she wouldn't know a Caballarial from a bump on the head. Hardy - Har - Har!! Mind you, not cause she's dumb or nuthin, it just isn't her scene. She is pretty cute though ;). I was only on the periphery of skating, it was what most of my guy friends did back then. That and doing possibly illegal stuff and going to shows. So don't go thinkin I'm some kinda Betty! Man, I always did wish I could skate, though! |

Did any of you guys longboard at all??? Before I moved to Beijing I was into longboarding in a big way and would crawl out of bed on Saturdays and Sundays (hangover or no hangover) at 5:30am - 6:00am so that I could skate the hills of Bristol without having to worry about being twatted by cars and trucks. Unfortunately Beijing is flatter than Nicole Kidmans chest so there is not much point bringing my board out here..... pity really as I well miss it. There was nothing better than pelting it down a Bristol hill early in the morning and feeling the wind in your face (and also getting the occasional abuse from drivers, and the occasional 'fuck me thats cool' from drunk people stumbling home from clubs).

Thanks for the update, floop. I was concerned that you hadn't been there since, what... Tuesday? Today I was hiking on Mt. Gleason and had an apple and some almonds.

Longboarding is cool I agree, fucking miss it alot. I would have loved to get into skateboarding but 1) I was 25 when I started Longboarding, and 2) didn't have the patience to learn the skill. Longboarding requires much less skill, just balls to tear down a hill and weave in and out of traffic. Bought that BMW skateboard though, thats how serious I was about LB. But that turned out to be shite, too heavy and difficult to handle.

Longboarding rules and is very addictive. I shit you not. My friend was riding in the truck beside me and clocked us at forty seven kilometres and hour. Might not seem fast but in the dark seems like you might just lift off the ground. Totally awesome! Two kilometre, freshly paved hill. Who could ask for anymore?

longboarding's cool. but it's not really the kind of skateboarding where you do a lot of tricks and stuff. it's more for just crusing around (which is cool too).. still, any form of skateboarding is better than, say, rollerblading.. |

I've got to agree with that. Even when they show those "xtreme" virtuoso rollerbladers on ESPN2, it still looks basically... well, er... to use a junior high school term... gay. |
