Having comfortably digested Show Me Your Tears over the last week, I suddenly noticed there are 6 Catholics albums out...coinciding with 6 slots in my CD player. So I loaded 'em up and hit random. It was like Catholics radio, a good time for sure. Does anyone else do this from time to time? Whoever invented the "random" button on CD changers needs a nobel prize. |

Yep, I used to do that all the time with TMBG. Thanks for reminding me!

the only band i ever did this with is tmbg. apollo 18 was actually made with shuffle mode in mind, specifically the true shuffle (not random) mode that basically riffle shuffled all the tracks. this would result with the 'fingertips' being interspersed between the songs.
call it pretentious or whatever but otherwise i almost always just listen to albums on their own. sometimes i'll be late going somewhere because i want to finish a cd rather than pause it. |

Same as me Ebby V, i almost always listen to entire albums.
I keep everything as MP3's, and have a dedicated 80gig drive for tunes (eh, Noexx?) with tons of various playlists..

I don't have any MP3s really, so I can't do playlists. 95 percent of the time I listen to albums as is, but I find that once in awhile either making a mix tape/CD or hitting random (and Ebb, my random doesn't repeat songs, so it's the good kind) can give the songs a new light, because they bounce off different tunes. Something refreshing. But I'm definitely an album guy all the way. |

For short car rides, I'm a bit ADD. If i'm driving to work, I want to fit the maximum amount of good tunes in my 10 minute drive. Also, a lot of times I'll load up 10 cds into the car, listen to them all, then because i get too lazy to replace them, I just end up going back to my favorite tunes. |

The only album I can ever recall using shuffle/random on was/is Teenager of the Year. It's length and variety of songs seem made for it. I guess random would work pretty well on most every Frank album 'cept the new one. It's the only one that really sounds like a true album; where the order of the songs truly has an overall effect on you. I guess when it comes down to it I'm a skip-around boy except when the album warrants it. Like any Sparklehorse album for instance, or most Dylan albums...or anything with a loose theme. Weird too, that my favorite style of album is concept and yet my favorite musician is Frank Black who more often than not, is all over the map. Things that make you go hmm... |

I dont know if this is very fan-antic, but i have made countless (over 100) mixed tapes of frank black along various themes, the best of (at whatever period of time), songs that start with basslines, quickies (songs under 2 1/2 minutes), historical epics, etc... I also wrote every word of every song he has written on my bedroom wall (just kidding) |

I hate doing random on my CD player because it makes that loud noise and takes like 10 seconds to switch CDs

For these reasons and more, I sure wouldn't mind someone to officially compilate, if only to help indoctrinate. (Then someone can help me masturbate, etc.) Is a 'best of' disc out of the question? |

Okay, this is just to kill some time. What would you think a FB best of and an FBC best of would look like? Not your personal favorites, but if it was a record company compiled thing? Limit 20 songs each.
The Best of Frank Black: 1. Los Angeles 2. Czar 3. Hang on to Your Ego 4. Ten Percenter 5. Adda Lee 6. Superabound 7. Headache 8. Speedy Marie 9. Thalassocry 10.Abstract Plain 11.Calistan 12.The Marsist 13.Men in Black
That actually looks like a damn fine little compilation to me even though I was mostly trying to fit in the "hits"
Here's my record company FBC best of 1. All My Ghosts 2. Dog Gone 3. Man Who Was Too Loud 4. I Gotta Move 5. Billy Radcliffe 6. Western Star 7. So. Bay 8. Robert Onion 9. I've Seen Your Picture 10. If It Takes All Night 11. St. Francis Dam Disaster 12. California Bound 13. Pray for the Girls 14. Pan American Highway 15. Velvety 16. San Antonio TX 17. Nadine 18. Everything is New 19. Manitoba
Not too sure on the new songs because none have really been established and I only did one from BLD just because that seems to be to be his least commercial album (even though I love it). Ah well.

A few minor amendments for my FB & C record company 'Best Of'...
1. All My Ghosts 2. Dog Gone 3. Man Who Was Too Loud 4. I Think I'm Starting To Lose It 5. Billy Radcliffe 6. So. Bay 7. Robert Onion 8. I'll Be Blue 9. St. Francis Dam Disaster 10. California Bound 11. Black Rider 12. Black Letter Days 13. Whisky In Your Shoes 14. San Antonio TX 15. Bartholomew 16. Nadine 17. Everything is New 18. Goodbye Lorraine

Okay, but I was thinking more of a "strictly commercial" list. That is, a single disc of what would slay a newbie upon first listen. Inclusion of songs like "Headache." Though albums may be an artificial format, I think the most "popular" two tracks of each album might be a good start. Along with two unreleased tracks at the end for fan measure.
