Well, I guess I'm tryin' to be a guy who's hailing from Ann Arbor. I'm heading down to Detroit next month and will definitely have a day or two to kick around. Anyone know of some good stuff there. Besides touring car factories? I've looked and there doesn't seem to be anyone all that good playing, but...

Why Detroit? It's a dump...I'm from the Detroit metro area (Warren, like a 1/2 mile outside Detroit). There are some interesting museums downtown. One place, if it really interests you, would be Greenfield Village. It's in Dearborn or the Dearborn area...it's an old fashioned village which has all sorts of historical stuff...the bicycle shop that the Wright Brothers worked in, Thomas Edison's shop...then there's the Henry Ford museum which has a ton of stuff. When are you going to be there? Maybe I can schedule a trip back home.

Yeah, Detroit was not really my ideal choice of destination, but it's a business trip, so I've got to go where the work takes me, I guess. :) I'm going to be there over from Wed night to Sun morning, working probably day and night Thurs and then we'll see about Friday. Depending on how well it goes, I may not have to work at all Friday (and only for a couple hours Thursday) or I might have to work till evening Friday. But I'll definitely have the night off and all day/night Sat. I don't leave Detroit until 10 am the next morning, so I don't have to call it a morning too early.

Let me know when you find out the dates...when I take trips to MI I usually make it a Thursday through Monday thing.

ann arbor is roughly 40 minutes (or an hour depending where you're coming from and how you drive) from detroit.
on monday a really, really good restaraunt just opened up. i went opening night and had the best sirloin i've ever had. it's zingerman's roadhouse and it's only about a half mile from I-94. if you want a really good meal some night check it out. it's gonna be busy as fuck, though, so call ahead (663-FOOD). it's not a snooty place, but it isn't cheap (my steak was $23.)
edit: also if you want i can be more specific on the location. |

Jim, I guess it's going to be the aforementioned days over the weekend of Halloween, if that helps. Greenfield Village sounds pretty cool, I might check that out if I'm bored during the day or something. I'm going to be keeping an eye on Pollstar to see what comes up in Detroit that weekend.
Ebb, I didn't realize Ann Arbor was that far out. I only have to drive from the airport which looked like it was a bit more towards AA, but it's hard to get a sense of distance on a map sometimes. The 94 is what I take to go from Detroit to AA isn't it? If this place is on the way, I'll definitely check it out. I'll have to remind you to give me that location when it get's a little closer to the trip.
Oh, and are there and Krispy Kremes in Detroit? I keep hearing about them and I fancy myself a donut conniseur (well, I don't, but damned if I don't love a good donut), and I'd like to check 'em out. I'm sure they're overrated, but...

I tried Krispy Kremes for the first time a few weeks ago...my friend absolutely loved them. Too sweet for my tastes though. You get to see the donuts being made, which is pretty cool. |

Krispy Kremes are the best donuts ever created by man. I know of 2 locations in SE MI with a drive thru. When they opened the one on Gratiot, my friend and i would get a dozen and drive around and eat them. They are the best, and no donut compares to a freshly made glazed Krispy Kreme donut. They're not overrated in the least bit. If you want to compare, you can also stop by a Tim Horton's and a Dunkin Donuts, but you'd be wasting your money.
Maybe I can make it out that weekend...at least I know far enough in advance to request time off. We shall see. And yeah, Greenfield Village is definitely worth the trip if you're into that sorta thing. You can spend an entire day at the village and the Henry Ford museum.

Well, to be honest, those dates aren't booked solid yet, but I should know by mid-October at the latest. But I'm pretty sure. So only in SE MI? None in the greater Detroit area? Blast. How far must I drive? They had a vendor when I was in Seattle, but they ran out right before I got there. I'll never have a Krispy Kream.

SE Michigan, greater Detroit area, same difference. It really all depends where the hell you'll be staying...Detroit is a big city that stretches for miles and miles. I don't know all the locations of Krispy Kreme in SE Michigan, but I do know of two, and one isn't TOO far outside Detroit, but that would be the east side of Detroit.

metro airport is about 25-30 minutes from ann arbor, so yeah, a little closer than detroit. I-94 is what you'd have to take east from metro airport to get to detroit. you'd go west to get to ann arbor.
but yes, ann arbor is quite a ways from detroit. i've occasionally heard people mention it as a 'suburb of detroit' which really couldn't be less accurate. it's a college town which has grown up around the U of M. |

if you go to Krispy Kreme, make sure you get the cream filled donut. that's kind of what it's all about. all of their other donuts are good, but not arguably better than any other donuts (you're Winchells or Dunkin' donut varieties)..
but the cream filled (or should i say kreme-filled?) are something to behold. that's a pretty amazing donut.

I only eat the glazed ones...I think I tried the chocolate covered ones...they're just not the same. Original glazed all the way.

original glazed are for pussies.
seriously, all the other donuts are just average donuts.. the kreme filled (what they're famous for) are the ones to get. |

actually the name krispy kreme has nothing to do with cream filled donuts, and if you don't like their regular donuts better i fail to see why you would like their cream filled ones better. sounds like some sort of donut placebo effect there.
krispy kreme's glazed and chocolate donuts make me happy. i don't get them often, though. |

Hmmm... well, hopefully I can find one I don't have to travel miles to find. The east side of Detroit from Ann Arbour sounds pretty damn far. But then, with the way everyone's talking about them, I might just have to make the trip at least from downtown Detroit. I promise I'll have one of each. :)

i regret to say you are correct Ebb Vicious. http://www.icon.com/kw/history.htm
i just always figured the kreme part was pivotal. seeing as how it's in the name and all..
i stand by my opinion about their cream filled though. they are my favorites..
as for their donuts as a whole, i do think they're overrated a bit (again, cream-filled aside).. i'll take Dunkin' any day.. plus, Dunkin' Donuts coffee is actually tolerable. |

Krispy Kreme donuts are too small. And Itchload is right-- they are too sweet because they overglaze them. Their selection sucks, too. I'm proud to support my local Korean-owned donut shops, not that overrated Starbucks-esque yuppie donut dump.

Tolerable. Sure their coffee is better than Maxwell House, but those punks can't fathom someone ordering coffee without 4 Tablespoons of sugar poured into it. If you want to start the day right, it's not going to happen at Dunkin Donuts.

i think you're misunderstanding me.. i never said Dunkin' Donuts was "better" than Krispy Kreme.. only, that Krispy Kreme is overrated, which it is. i'm just not in the camp of, "ooohhh, Krispy Kreme are the BEST donuts ever!".. because that's bullshit. (although, as i stated, they do make a mean cream filled and it's fun to watch the donuts being made).
as for coffee, i stand by "tolerable".. i would never go there FOR coffee (we've had this coffee discussion darwin, and you know how much of a fellow peet's coffee snob i am).. but say, you're there with your dad or something and you can't be bothered to ask him to make a special trip just so you can have your Peet's coffee (the only coffee i drink), but you feel like having something warm to go with your apple fritter.. at least it isn't TOTAL shit. (this is by average shit coffee standards)..
the other thing i factor into my opinion is that most of the Dunkin' Donuts stores (around here anyway), are owned by Chinese or Korean families (not unlike the donut shops in BLT's neighborhood).. and i can't speak for other areas, but at the Dunkin' shops around here, there are always a LOT of cute asian women working there. (unlike at Krispy Kreme, where the employees are invariably overweight, middle-aged men).
that's all i'm saying..
to recap:
Krispy Kreme = fun to watch donuts
but ultimately mediocre tasting (cream filled aside)..
Dunkin' Donuts = not much better, but they have cute asian women, like this one:

When did pictures of scantily clothed Asian women become available on the web? This internet thing is starting to pay dividends. |
