Just curious. Why is Blaine being protested? He has done similar events in the US and treated as the curiousity it is. What gives with the anti-Blaine sentiment and protests? |

I don't think its anti Blaine, more like pissed teenagers with plenty of eggs. I have nothing against him, in fact next time i have to go to the High Court i might swing by to see how he is.
Don't you think that he looks much better since he has put on some weight? Much less sinister. |

I thought it might be teenagers run amuck, but, the articles I have read says these are mid-30's types. I think it was in the Guardian, but, the security people specifically lamented the fact that the protesters where 'middle-aged' and "not yobs" (not totally sure I know what yobs is). thanks though.
I would say he looks less mystical as a slightly pudgy guy. When he was a bit gaunt and unknown there was more mystery. Now that he is constantly banging super models its probably not as easy for him to look sinister... |

Blaine's a spiffy guy...I saw some of a special on him on the Discovery Channel, and it blew my mind. He does some really amazing stuff.

Is this David Blaine we are talking about? That magician dude?
If so, I saw that special on Discovery too. It saw it a long time ago but it was on the other night also. It was quite entertaining.

It's that angry mob mentality: Look at that! What's he trying to prove?? That's different, kill him! Maybe these folks are upset that they will never come up with any artistic vision of their own...

He is a little pretentious what with that bored sounding voice that resonates "I'm above mere mortals". He once did an interview with an English talk show host 'Eamon Holmes' where instead of just answering the questions straight up, he kept showing the guy a picture of an eye drawn on his hand. I mean, what's that all about? If the English show 'Bo Selecta!' ever makes it to the US, (I very much doubt it will) try and catch an episode, they do an excellent David Blaine parody. Actually if you can be bothered it's on Kazaa to download, go for episode 2x2 (Series 2, episode 2)

I hate to bring up Carson Daly again, but when David Blaine went on his show, he reached into his chest, yes, chest, and pulled out a beating heart! People were gasping and Carson ran back stage like a little girl. They had a graphic advisory for that episode. It was amazing, though I suspect we've all been had. That's entertainment. |

He seriously does some amazing shit...I know you can find videos of him levitating on Kazaa...like, almost a FOOT off the ground. The card tricks he does...it's all pretty amazing. After a half hour, I was convinced that magic is real, and I don't even believe in God!

Has nobody here seen 'secrets of the street magician revealed'? They pretty much exposed all of his tricks including the pulling the head off a chicken one and and the famous levitation trick. Tell me if you want me to explain it cause I can't be bothered typing reams of text if no ones interested. I think it's a bit of a joke that the guy's worth 30 million usd for doing some pissy card tricks and standing on a big pole for a while. I mean think of all the people who need money just for basic food, heat and shelter. Sorry to go on a Blaine rant but he just aggrivates me in a way that even the most annoying celebritys don't, possible cause of the high and mighty way he acts. South Park hit the mark when they did the 'Cult of David Blaine' episode, I think that guy really has got a god complex. Or maybe I'm just jealous cause his girlfriends a model and my lovers a hand. :( His voice fucks me off BIG STYLE... That droning, monotone, emotionless, nasal wheeze. GRRRR. Yeah, I really went off him after the aformentioned special.

Actually I might be tempted to diagram the levitation trick in full MSpaint glory if the demand is high enough. (I'm very bored right now)

I'll hint by saying that the levitation trick involves not much more than standing on one foot, full explanation soon.

Dude...I have a video clip of him levitating out on the streets of NYC, about a foot off the ground. You can see his SHADOW. He's not standing on one foot.

El Barto I can't believe your so gullible! I mean come on, do you really think a human being can levitate without any apparatus or camera trickery? As soon as I have some brekfast I'll diagram it all.

Fuck MS paint refuses to save in Jpgs or Giffs, if anyone can offer help on this it would be much appreciated. In the meantime I'll just explain in text, here goes...
This trick is done in 2 parts, first I'll explain part 1...
Shot 1, David stand on a street in NYC with a small building to his left (note you never see the top of this building) and a small crowd behind him. Always behind him, that's important. The crowd are also positoned so they are seeing him from a slanted angle, i.e. they can only see one of his feet in whole. The actual trick is the simplest part, as I said before he simply puts weight on the toes of his left foot while lifting the right foot and the left heel. This looks to the crowd like he is levitating a couple of inches or so. They film the amazed reaction of the crowd. End of part 1
Part 2
The camera crew return to the same location, this time with a pulley device coming from the top of the building to Davids left. They hook him up and pull him about 1 foot off the ground as El barto mentioned before. That's filmed and canned for later. When they film this part of the shot note you never see David above the waist. Now the corwd from part 1 has gone right? Correct. But they still need to show this crowd in part of shot 2. Here's the clever bit... The producers have footage of the original crowd, they simply note what the person on the end was wearing and dress a crew member in identical colours. When they film David with the pulley this crew member is placed to the far right of frame so you just see 1 arm and leg coming from the right of the shot and giving the illusion that the orgingal crowd is still there. The rest is obviously done with simple, run-of-the mill editing to make the shot look sequenced and giving the illusion tht this all happened in one go.
If theres any hole in this bear in mind that I haven't seen 'Street magic revealed' for over a year now, but rest assured this is basically how it's done. I was oringinally impressed myself El Barto, and myabe even a little unnerved if I'm honest. But every trick is what it is, a trick, an illusion. If someone can give me advice for paint I might be able to do diagrams that explain a little better. I've tried to be as concise as possible. If you ever see David Blaine levitate a foot off the ground in person then I'll be really impressed, but somehow I can't see it happening.

If the English show 'Bo Selecta!' ever makes it to the US, don't watch it. If there was ever a less funny program on TV I have yet to see it. Low budget late night filler, fronted by a supremely talentless tosser.
Thanks for the explanation of the levitation 'trick'. I find this kind of thing pretty dull -- even I could be lifted up by a crane and carry out amazing tricks with a camera and an edit suite. He should stick to his (very impressive) slight-of-hand stuff.

I'm surprised that the fact that David Blaine cannot levitate has to be explained. A little thing we like to call science should have done that for us in the 8th grade or so.
I actually figured out the levitation trick myself (not the camera re-shoots) by fooling around. If you keep your heels together and position the 'crowd' at an angle, you can lift yourself up with one foot, maintaining your heels together mind you, and the toes you are standing on dissapear. It looks like you are levitating. You need to have good leg strength to do it. I was fooling around as I said and lifted for about a second or two and my wife said "you did it, thats it!". Then it took a little while for me to get it down. Add the arms flapping up from the side and you have yourself a nice little party trick.
I would love to see that 'revealed' video because the card tricks are real mind benders. As well as the 'think of the person who is closest to you..." trick. Its good stuff. |

Um, I'm aware that people can't really levitate; I didn't know how the illusion was done (Jeez). Turns out it's a camera trick, which seemed too obvious for such a top magician...

Hey Drugged Bunny, 5 weeks ago I would have totally agreed with you about Bo Selecta!, but I stuck with it basically cuase there's was nothing else on and I have to say once you get into the mindeset of it it becomes hillarious. Definitely an aquired taste and probably not for everyone. My first reaction was 'what is this filthy, vulgar trash?' but now I never miss it. If you can steal yourself to give it another go I suggest you do. It took me a while to get into Tom Green aswell but you know some of these things you have to give time.

Not too sure about the burger van, but you can see the ice cream van very clearly from the live feed on sky one. It's actually positoned right above his head when looking at the 'in box' camera, the irony is killing me :)

Dallas you are right, it is 30-something fuckers throwing eggs at Blaine. I can't explain it to you except to say that Cunts do live in London. Who would of thought that there were more thugs in London than New York? Still, I do feel ashamed of my fellow Brits, Sorry. |

Gracie - I wouldnt be ashamed. Most in this forum live in countries where acting out like this has very little negative consequence, but, has the allure of '15 mins' of fame or notariety. Guarantee that the guy who tried to cut the water line has been the recipient of more than a few free pints from friends and acquaintances for his act.
I actually like Blaines interpretation of magic. I dont like him putting himself out there as someone mystical. The guy does good illusions, tricks. Thats enough. The protests and anger just took me by surprise, especially after the non-reaction from NY'ers to his glass coffin and encased in ice tricks.
