okay.....so many peoples here have stated how they feel that SMYT is the best frank black album to date. i don't see it myself. it is a great album but definitely not my personal favorite. i mean the horns alone drop it a few points in comparison to the many others. i could go in depth as to why it doesn't beat some other releases, but i'll save you your valuable reading time. so i want to see some good arguments for why it is or isn't the best release...... let it all loose here.....i don't mind. ryan

I don't think it's the best either. However, it is an amazing album which is, in my opinion, right up there with their greatest (DITS/TOTY/I like Frank).
Unfortunately, what makes your post lose credit is the fact that you deduct points for horns being used. This, my friend, is strange. We are talking about music here.. not how to make up your bunk in U.S. marines. Horns can stay. Noexx can go.

Horns are cool. The Snake sounds like a Roxy Music song.

to be fair i'll listen to the song right now......... okay i did. so this massif centrale song that everyone loves and SMYT is the best thing that this band has ever done in your words? i wouldn't think so and i won't say anything negative to you as opinions are very valid to me, that's why i started this thread. i just think the band has done better....but if you would have read my initial post i said i love this album. i just don't think it's the most amazing thing i have ever heard from the frank black stuff....and in thinking that it doesn't mean i hate this album. i still stick to my original sentence about the horns. they just aren't necessary for ME......but i am a fan of space in music....you don't need 8 or more things going on at once all the time. let the music have space is all i feel...... |

Before I just read your post I was listening to The Snake and thought that it sounded a little like Roxy Music. I love this song!

I like Massif Centrale alot but IMO it's not the best song on the album. Ive only had the album for a day so it's too soon to make a serious comment, but so far Everything is New is up there, as is The Snake, Manitoba, My Favorite Kiss.

I thought Massif Centrale would be the best song on the album because of the awesome live versions on the hearitagain.net concerts. Now I know there are some better songs on SMYT, but it still is an amazing track.

Am I the only one (with Stuart) to see some Roxy Music/Ferry similarities? These songs titles (This Old Heartache, When Will Happiness Find Me Again?) really look like RM songs. Actually I was sure Bryan Ferry had a song called This Old Heartache. Rich Gilbert soloes like Manzanera and Jack Kidney like Andy McKay. Add Eno to SMYT and you'd have got the best album ever.

SMYT is my favourite Frank Black and the Catholics record, probably followed by Dog in the Sand or Self Titled. I can't say for certain why, other than I feel that it is just a very strong album all round, the songs are all good and they all fit in very well with each other to make one great record. Unlike SMYT, I think that most of the other FBC albums have been a bit hit and miss, some great songs, but some a bit over the place.
Don't know where I'd rate it amoung all FB albums (excluding Pixies), but it's definately in the top 3 with TOTY and Self Titled FB. |

I have to same feeling with this one as I did with DITS when you listen to it, it's so different/good/new/pop that other FB do not really matter to you for a week or so.
that's a good thing

In fact, This Old Heartache (the song, not the title) sounds very much like Tom Waits to my ears. But globally - it's a compliment -, SMYT sounds rather like Neil Young's "Comes A Time" and "Old Ways". It's my opinion anyway... |

what it sounds like to me is what i've been expecting from what others here have been saying: the sound is more expansive by including the horn riff, accordian, melodica. although it hasn't gelled compeletly it may be his favored album to a lot of people who are fresh into it from the mainstream -although mainstream is either teen angst jackhammer,sappy/whiny or from the country spectrum nashville studio format (in country it is actually the norm to not have a regular band but to use the stable of studio pros handed down for generations-very very few use the same band for recording and playing out)and the rest are the ones that some of us also find palatable. I was shocked to hear the sound motif in 'this old heartache' if only Piero Umiliani were alive today i think he might be a guest on this disc-love that italian wahwah geetar -it took balls to make that song but i've heard it maybe twice so no rating yet. i know the horn thing you guy's are hung on -i didn't think Roxy -i just thought it was a kick ass horn sound -right alongside the band in one take is what i was envisioning, cool. sheesh frank sounds like he's moving further north for that perfect batch of sinsemilla or something -a lot of references to the evil weed.

Not to dismiss poor ryan/anthony's comments, but how can you dislike an instrument. You might dislike some of the things it's associated with (i.e. pedal steel = cheesy country), but it's really just a sound unless it's played in that cliched way (i.e. Goodbye Lorraine). Plus, I love the horns and saxophone. I think the instrumentation was quite well done and in particular on the final tracks. Harmonica is not my favourite instrument, but it sounds great where it's used, I think.
That said, SMYT is not my favourite release, but it IS very tasty and will probably be raised among FB classics over time.

i know it's irrational and kind of silly, but quite simply i HATE saxaphone. when i hear it it makes me violent and angry (especially saxaphone solos), therefore, for me, it's safe to say that i don't like the instrument.
i don't think it's that crazy not to like an instrument.. the same way it's not crazy for some people to REALLY like one particular instrument.
i just don't like sax. though there are exceptions.. trumpets i love though.
i know, it's crazy. |

Yeah, that's a pretty good point, actually. I mean, I love.. LOVE ... the french horn, so why couldn't someone just as easily hate it? Cheerfully withdrawn.
I just couldn't think of any instruments I hate in all contexts, the closest I come is harmonica, but FB hasn't gone wrong with it yet.

hey can someone limit my posts to 1 after 10 p.m.?? hehe, by then i have usually had a few and i get silly. i'm kinda with floop on the horn/saxaphone thing. it's mainly saxaphone i can't stand.....the sound just makes me cringe, i don't know how or why this came to be, it just is. i feel someone could hate the guitar, piano, or drums just as easily.....i don't. but, i bet someone could just be like, "you know i just don't like the way a piano sounds sometimes."

This Old Heartache was rather expertly done by Frank on acoustic at Temple Bar, minus all the percussion - sounded brilliant. I agree about the Tom Waites feel - I wonder if they meet up for the odd jar or two? |

I can't say yet whether or not I think it's their best album...I can say that it's much more focused than previous albums, much more solid, and has fewer songs that I can say I truely don't like. I don't think there's a song on this album that I really despise, which may be a first for FB albums.

What's amazing to me about this album is that every track is at least good, at best brilliant. Black Letter Days is a phenomenal record, but a few of the songs, in my opinion, are weak (e.g. 1826, Jane the Queen of Love, 21 Reasons). Devil's Workshop came close to the consistency of Tears, but the very shitty track The Scene almost ruins the album for me. I don't like feeling compelled to skip a song while playing cds, so Tears, for me, is a godsend. Dog in the Sand (one of my favorite albums by any artist) has a near equal in Tears. May Frank continue to grow! |

I've listened to it four times now, and I really like it. Their best? I dunno, but it's damn fine. "Massif Centrale" is great, so is "Everything Is New". Great albums often take a few listens to truly sink in, so we'll see if that happens. Either way, it's great to have a new FB to listen to. |

I'm a sax hater myself I refer to it as the ''porn-instrument'' because I *heard* it is used much in pornomovie soundtracks

Think SMYT is good but not the best of Frank... like BLD better which is in a similar ilk to SMYT.
At the end of the day it is better than 90% of what comes on the market and it is a welcome addition to my record collection...
Really it doesn't matter what I say today because sooner or later it will probably me favourite Frank album |

heh..rather volatile, but i guess that's to be expected on a fanboard. =)
I'd also agree this isn't his 'best' album, tho i'd say it's the most 'accessable'. Which is why many would say it's his best. Regardless, it's still a great album.
As for the sax, i think this is interesting... Often, in past times, when folks were developing instruments, the goal was to simulate the human voice, or some aspect of it.. I'm pretty sure the clarinet/sax and trumpet were two of the most successful items in this respect..and if this holds true, i wonder if this plays a part in how people react to it? |

I cast a vote for the sax. My best example is its use on Pink Floyd's Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I agree though in some uses it can be annoying. As for SMYT, it sounds good to me but I still need a little more time to listen to it. |

Kenny G! I might have mentionned this before but a friend of mine saw Kenny G in a brothel in Beijing when he played a concert here earlier this year. It's probably safe to say that he paid someone to play his saxophone that evening.
I don't really know much of Tom Waits stuff but to me This Old Heartache sounds a little like Leonard Cohen.
