Did Frank ever have a band called "Teenage Fan Club?" There are some songs on KaZaa that are listed as being by them, and it is indeed Frank on vocals. The songs I've found are "Pray for the Girls" and "Handyman." Was there ever a "Teenage Fan Club" or is it someone just getting the band wrong?

There is a band called Teenage Fanclub that Frank is pals with. In the mid-90's, he cut some tracks with BBC's John Peel. These included Handyman, Sister Isabel (both cover songs) and The Jaques Tati, and the earliest version of The Man Who Was Too Loud. This EP is available on cd, and is a minor curiosity. As for Teenage Fanclub being involved with Frank as his personal band, no. It was meerly a quick side collaboration out of fun.

Also, as for Pray For The Girls, Teenage Fanclub had absolutely nothing to do with. This song was strictly recorded by the Catholics (and Frank, of course!) for the POWERPUFF GIRLS soundtrack back in 1999. How FB&C's became involved with this project, I'm clueless...maybe someone else can help out here? But Glacial906, this song rocks! When I managed an independent CD store a while back, I sold tons of this soundtrack hoping to convert people into FBCatholics...most of the customers came back and bought a Frank CD based on this recommendation alone. I think they (FB&C's) should do more strictly-soundrack stuff...it would help spread their Word. If you get the chance, grab the song...it's a hoot!

I did notice the clip from the Powerpuff Girls at the end of the song...I wondered about that. Soundtracks would be a good way for FB&TC to get a little bit more notice without going mainstream. (Or, at the very least, a little bit of money.)

Pray for the Girls is one of the coolest FB songs. The build up, and how each instrument comes in as the song progresses is fabulous.

The Powerpuff Girls' creator Craig McCracken apparently emailed Frank asking if he'd contribute a song for the film and was stunned to get a tape in reply. He was on the Abstract Plain mailing list for a while and told us all about it...

Pray for the Girls is a great song, but that little bit at the end is very very very annoying!
By the way, what is Crime and Punishment in Suburbia?? I downloaded the theme tune off of Kazaa to find that it was an instrumental of Bullet. Is it some kind of US cop tv show or something?

Crime and Punishment in Suburbia is an independant film that came out a few years ago. I went out and rented it, just to hear the track. It plays during the opening credits.

Teenage Fanclub is an awesome band. The relation/connection between Frank and the Fanblubs are these: 1. Both have used producer/engineer Dave Bianco and Chaz Banks was their promotor. If you are in the market for a Teenage Fanclub record I recommend Songs From Northern Britain and/or Grand Prix |

I saw Crime and Punishment in Suburbia...it's not bad, not the greatest though. Interesting...there's one song in the middle that Frank Black duets with some female singer, and then there's a twisted version of Monkey Gone To Heaven in there during a pep ralley from hell sorta scene. Joey Santiago scored the film.

Since this applies to FB - shouldn't it be in the FB General Chat area? I am so confused. |

Hey! I didn't know there was another FB song in the movie apart from the instrumental Bullet. I bought the DVD recently but still haven't seen it. The soundtrack is great; lots of very cool songs by FB & Santiago, Modest Mouse, OP8 & Guided By Voices among others.

Hey, speaking of videos, is there any place on-line where you can see FB videos? I have been poking around but have yet to find anything. |

Teenage Fanclub are brilliant. They supported the Pixies at the gig at the SECC in Glasgow when the barriers collapsed - I'm guessing this is maybe how Frank and the Fannies became friends? The Frank Black/Teenage Fanclub EP is well worth searching out. As for the Fannies, their best albums in my opinion are "Thirteen" and "Grand Prix", if you like FB+C you'll like them.
I think there are FB videos somewhere on the FTP section of this site - I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure there are. I would've checked them out myself but I'm on a 56k modem....

I saw Teenage Fanclub back in 1995. They were pretty good. Their lead singer had a beard at the time and said he had just had a buffet lunch before the gig at the Marriot Hotel in Bristol. He then told everyone that they had brought some food along for the crowd and started tossing dried fruit at people.... I think that the guy said something like 'I picked up some dried fruit instead quiche, as that would get messy.' It was a good gig.

I think they reissued it, I've seen it in HMV but in a different sleeve to the one I got back in the day. Mind you that's an HMV in London, not Canada or China.

I have this from good ole Amazon.
I would suggest that it is a VITAL purchase for any completist - or curious fan...
BTW check out Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub - its a permanent fave of mine with so many tiny gems on it & its great pop music - theire writting on it is similar to the FB quote on a perfect song should be 3 minutes of blazing stimulation and left the heck alone...

The Frank Black/Teenage Fanclub EP is still available at Amazon and Tower.com, but they both report low stock, so get it while you can! There are also a few other out-of-print Frank Black goodies on Tower's site. |

Bandwagonesque and some of Teenage Fanclub's early work was said to be influenced by Big Star, though they are said to have taken that style pop further along. I didn't know of the Frank Black connection with them till looking here. I see they're friends of FB because they are on that Peel Sessions album mentioned in this thread though, so it's good I saw this thread and learned something new. I don't listen to them much; tend to listen to Big Star if I am in the mood for that or frank black/pixies if I'm in the mood for the other. I've heard good things about them from musicians I respect. |
