I think out of all the instruments out there, I loathe the jew's harp. ;)
As for SMYT being the best, I'll have to reserve my opinion for now and give it a few more listens. So far the songs that jump out at me are: Massif Centrale, Jaina Blues, Nadine and The Snake. |

hi, i bought it 2 days ago and i've been listening to it since everytime i could (except for a bob dylan and a fairport convention). The album is really strong, every songs are excellent and you can listen to it ten times without being bored and all of you are right that's a great thing. But it's really not my favorite FB album because the arrangements and production are sometimes too simple as too many guitar solos compared to TOTY or dog in the sand. My favorites tunes are the surprising new house of the pope(structure is really interesting here), the cooooooool horrible day, massif centrale of course because frank can surprise us again with his voice(and cuz i'm french!) and nadine because it's soooo frank blackish!
Just over a little month now and frank will come to France, two years that we are waiting and thanks to our little country we can see him many many times.
That's my first post on the forum but let me tell ya you're the coolest fan on the web.

Re: the sax.
I used to play the sax way back in the day (I still remember how to, oddly enough), so maybe that's why I can appreciate it so damn much on SMYT.

"""Black Letter Days is a phenomenal record, but a few of the songs, in my opinion, are weak (e.g. 1826, Jane the Queen of Love, 21 Reasons)."""
Crack kills my friend as those songs are three of the best on Black Letter Days.
Show Me Your Tears after a couple listens is just o.k. It sounds like it was mixed by a 14 year old who just got his first 4-track. Solo's are made to be heard, not for background filler.
There are a few keepers on this release but not anywhere near the calibur of his past releases.
Three new releases in little over a year, I can't think of any other artist who works this hard and it's good to be a FB and the Catholics fan. No doubt about it. |

I just don't like the way it sounds and I can't really pinpoint why. All FB and The Catholics other discs were recorded the same way, live to two track, but for some reason this disc sounds like a bootleg copy.
No big deal, it's just an observation. |

Well, not all of them, but lately (post Dog In The Sand). But I think the mixing is actually phenomenal. When you have that much going on (Manitoba) sometimes there's a lot of cool stuff going on in the back, and I love that. It rewards you for listening closely. The songs sound good I think, and definitely it can't be easy to mix live 16 players simultaneously. They were never that ambitious with previous records.
