Hi All,

I've just recently purchased a chipped PS2, and am wanting to know what games are worth buying and what games should be avoided.

So far I have

FIFA 2003
Tiger Woods 2003
GTA Vice City
Splinter Cell
SOCOM US Navy Seals
Rocky
GT3
The Getaway
Final Fantasy International

I guess games are so cheap here that I could collect them like I collect DVD's but I really cannot be arsed to buy crap games. What games have you bought that are well worth the time and effort completing?

Avoid: All
Buy: A PC

Vice City is fun. Splinter Cell looks like a lot of fun.

I've got a PC as well. Picked up a pentium 4, 50gb hd, 128mb ram for about $240.... but all of the games here seem to be in Chinese which I don't understand (writing as well as speech). Is this computer good enough to dpownload stuff from the FTP?

Vice City is a cool game although a little too violent for my liking.... started playing Splinter Cell yesterday and so far that looks a cracking game. The Getaway is also a great game where you can rag it around London and take out the police... a little like GTA but a little different.

Sounds like a good system to me. I'd upgrade the RAM to 256 or 512 and, depending on your video card, get a better one. Computer power doesn't matter when it comes to downloading from the FTP...it's all about connection connection connection.

what kind of games do you like? I haven't played Tekken 4 yet, but if it's anything like 1,2 and 3 it's sure to be a fun game. My friend really likes Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero.
Then there's Dynasty Warrior 3 if you like the feudal age chinese warrior stuff. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a universally enjoyed title. Medal of HOnor as well. SSX Tricky is a good snowboarding game. There's a game called Stuntman that's supposed to be a one of a kind type of game.

I used to have Stuntman (which is like Driver meets Hooper (that Burt Reynolds / Jan Michael Vincent (aka Stringfellow Hawk) movie)), and it was pretty good I guess. Ive completed MGS2, which is good but not as good as the first one (maybe it no longer seems original). I'll check the games that you mentionned though as I'm in need of more games.

World Championship Snooker is a great game... might seem a little boring but once you start playing it you cannot stop.

Hrm. I've found that my Gamecube is getting a lot more play than my PS2 these days. I haven't played a PC game I've liked since like 1996, except for maybe Half Life.

No FPS is better than Half-Life...Half-Life is the best FPS ever, period. It's in my top 5 games. It's a first person shooter, but with an AMAZING plot...it really grabs you and holds you in. I love that game, and I cannot wait until HL2 comes out (next month I hope!). I might just play Half-Life 1 over again.

Yeah, Half-Life was a great game and very groundbreaking in many ways that have nothing to do with the fact that it's a FPS. Not so much that it was completely original in and of itself, but it took a lot of great ideas from other FPS's and brought them into one game.

1) Plot/Puzzles/Intelligence - The Star Wars FPS games had stellar plots/stories as well as puzzles that didn't revolve around 'find the key, find the door'. Very realistic settings and so forth. The original Dark Forces was ground breaking in many of the ways that Half Life is credited as far as the 'intelligent' fps goes. And the only game that's really come close since, in my mind, is Max Payne.

2) Multiplayer - Well, it had been pioneered with Quake and other games, but thanks to some sweet network code and a much less centralized players-as-servers model, it definitely rewrote the rules.

3) Mods - Well, again, Doom was the first FPS to support MODs (I even created a few back in the day), but Half-Life took that idea and ran with it big time, not only utilizing the new Internet beast, but really supporting their mod community. And hence the game and many offshoots (Team Fortress, Counterstrike, ...) are HUGE.

Well, I could go on, but I think that gives a good idea of where I'm coming from. Well deserving of a spot on anyone's top 5, though I suspect I'll be dissappointed with HL2.

That is definitely worth buying. I downloaded the game in excitement before it came out and loved it so much I bought it anyway. They just do a really good job of setting the mood and characters, the story's great, and the gameplay is awesome. Highly recommend.

Isn't it a really short game though??? Maybe there are differences between the PC and PS2 version... I'll definately buy it next time I see it though.

I don't know that it's short, it's not the longest game I've played, but Half-Life was too long. Those alien levels at the end really overstayed their welcome and you're thinking to yourself, Dear Lord, how many more levels must I go through this to finish it?! How many more jump puzzles can they possibly throw at me?! Max Payne was just right.

Yeah, I can speak for Max Payne too...another great game with a great plot and voice acting, etc...totally a unique game, nothing else like it. I don't know if it's possible you'll be disappointed by HL2 tho...Valve has been working on it for years. Maybe we expect it to be twice as good as the original, which may be expecting too much. I'm expecting it to be just as good as the original. Can't fucking wait.

Hahaha, Daikantana. Dude, no way. There's NO WAY the game will be within the same hemisphere as Daikantana...just, no way. That's scientifically unpossible. I remember playing the demo after all the hype, going through it, and I was thinking to myself "Uh, holy shit, is it just me or is it getting SUCK in here?" I thought I may have been the only one completely NOT enjoying myself. Killer frogs and dragonflies? WHAT THE FUCK?

Yeah, I don't think it's possible that it'll suck as much as Daikatana, but just saying that I'm always wary about "it's been years in the making" as any form of hype. That was a god-awful game and John Romero's ego hopefully was taken down a peg after his antics with Carmack.

As for your question, Stuart, don't much follow the PS/2 I'm afraid, as I don't own one.

There's a flaw to your theory, though: Half-Life 2 wasn't announced until a few months ago. And it was announced with a release date. Now, if that release date is pushed back, I'd start to worry...well, pushed back more than once. I'll give them 1 chance to push it back, because that's expected of any game.

Hey Stuart if you like football games check out Pro Evolution Soccer 2. Or Winning Eleven 7 if you can find it. Both basically the same game but its great, best footy game around, leagues ahead of fifa. What else...Hitman 2 is pretty good, stealth style game in the style of splinter cell meets max payne (tho not THAT good!) but you need quite a bit of pateince for it. Tony Hawks 3 and 4 are pretty good. Even if you dont like skating which im not too fond of, its a good laugh and playable once you get beyond the initial tricky controls. Devil May Cry is good, good graphics and slick gameplay from Konami, a wee bit like Resident Evil in looks but gameplay much more arcade/action however dont buy devil may cry 2, the first one is much better. Crazy Taxi games are good for a quick thrill, if you can put up with the Offspring i recommend it! Trying to think of other games as all the best ones have been mentioned already. Avoid the Matrix like the plague. NBA Street 2 is good for a laugh, like NBA Jam except better, newer. Anyway if i think of any more i'll let u know, cheers.

Stevio, funny you should write what you wrote as yesterday I spent a serious amount of time playing Pro Eveolution 2.... great game but takes a bit of effort to master. No doubt I'll be playing it later today! I have also got FIFA 2003, and to be honest I am not impressed at all.

I also have TH4, and have heard that it's a great game although I haven't really played on it yet. Thats the problem, Ive gone out and bought shitloads of games because they are less than 50p each, so I need time to get around to playing them.

Do you have a chipped PS2??? If you do then let me know as my friend is returning back to the UK next month, and I'll get him to send you a load of games. If you haven't get it chipped and I'll do the above.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but what is a "chipped" PS2? I've got one, but to my knowledge it isn't "chipped."

Quantum nonlocality does not prove that "signals" travel "faster than light." Rather, it shows that at a deep level of reality the speed of light as a limiting factor is irrelevant because phenomena are instantaneously connected regardless of distance.

A chipped PS2 is a PS2 which has a special chip put in which allows you to play copied games.

Cool Stuart that would be great if you could! I dont have a chipped playstation 2 as such, though I do have a method of playing copied games, its a bit dodgy and involves some jiggery pokery but hey it works! I should really get round to getting it chipped but you know, student lifestyle, moneys tight. Forgot to mention other games like SSX Tricky which is pretty good too. I swear I can think of so many games when im not at the computer but when i sit down my mind goes blank! Tenchu 3 is alright too if you have the patience. Can be dodgy at times with camera angles and controls but good if you can get past that. Ah well my mind has gone blank, i'll post again when i can remember more titles! Take it easy man, cheers!

No worries, send me an email with a list that you want and I'll give them to my mates when they return back to the U.K. Games only cost 50p each so I'm hardly breaking the bank. Bear in mind that most of them are from Japanese games, not too sure if this will make a difference.

i have all three next-gen systems, and i like the PS2 the least. i basically only got it for GTA and Final Fantasy games, and i know im speaking for myself when i say i was very let down by both GTAs. the missions are boring, and killing random people with a machete gets kind of boring after an hour or so.

i have, however, been playing my gamecube to death recently. soul calibur 2, zelda, metroid, plus the gameboy player and the "viewtiful joe" demo disc. very, very good stuff.

I cannot get into Final Fantasy.... seems terribly boring to me. But then again I have only spend about 20 minutes trying to play it. It is a game that requires persistence?

GTA Vice City is a great game, I though that it was a little boring but as you move along things get alot more involved, although I find it a trifle violent at times.

Roleplaying games are kind of a cult thing...they're not for everybody, but those who love them REALLY LOVE THEM. They're alright in my books, but I prefer the sort of action-RPGs (like Legends of Zelda) rather than the straight-up RPG like Final Fantasy. I did have a lot of fun with Legend(s?) of Mana on SNES, though.

For me attacking a creature buy pressing a button and relying on a points type of strength is a little boring, but maybe i need to spend a little more time and patients to explore other aspects of the game because I have heard alot of people say that FF is a great game.
