Listen folks,
I'm a huge David Bowie fan. He's doing a massive tour this year, with Macy Gray as the opener. Bowie has a new album out in September, as does Frank. They're friends, and fans of each other. So, why can't Frank tour with the Thin White Duke? Sweet Jesus, Musical Nirvana!
Think of the exposure! We could have saved Rock in one damn tour!
Why did this not happen?!

Maybe b/c Bowie will be in stadiums and FB prefers clubs? I don't know. The exposure would be cool - but I am happy I will be seeing FB in smaller venues. |

I too am a big Bowie fan...have you seen the 50th anniversary video? He sings 'Scary Monsters' with Frank Black!
I too would love to go to a gig where they supported each other however I fear that the media would have a field day with reference to has-beens (not that that's no reason to do it). |

Also I forgot...on his previous tour Bowie only played smaller venues and I'm actually quite disappointed he's mainly playing the stadiums (stadia?) this time around. |

I know w/this tour, the venue will be decided on how he's drawn historically in that area. So, like in CA I'm sure he'd play a stadium, but here in CT (please, please, please) a mid-sized venue. We'll see. |

The situation here in France is even worse: David Bowie plays on Oct. 20th in Paris with the Dandy Warhols opening, while Frank plays 2 days earlier in the same (shitty) venue opening for... Placebo! Which means that if I go to see Bowie, I'll have to endure the DW, and if I want to see Frank I'll be forced to give my money to fuckin' Brian Molko. Conclusion: I'm not going to any of the 2. Couldn't they exchange their opening bands?

David has planned a commercially-minded tour - which has practically sold out. He's bound to announce more dates when 'Reality' is released in September. Perhaps unfortunately, the pressure to sell out the stadium venues means picking a support artist who will appeal to people who only buy a few records a year. In Europe it's the Dandy Warhols (although faves of David's, better known for hit singles) and the US sees Macy Gray. They'll just pick up extra tickets from people who want a 'nice evening out'... lighters in the air, crying out for 'that Major Tom song' and the 'Let's Dance' album...

I like the Dandy Warhols. OK, so they're derivative, but they do come up with great pop songs (with a young loud 'n' snotty overtone that has always appealed to me). If the Dandy Warhols were the worst thing in pop music today, we'd be in pretty good shape.
Although I do see a Bowie-Black partnership in the future somehow. At the most cynical, it would sure buy Bowie a lot of cred in a younger market (not that he shouldn't already have it, but sometimes people need a little nudge...).

Yeah, I have to admit, I hate that too. I was so relieved when I went to see my heroes, Roxy Music, last year, and they opened not with "Dance Away" or "Avalon" or even "Love is the Drug" or some other latter-year yuppie pleaser, but with "Re-Make, Re-Model" and you could tell who the hard core Roxy heads were by the obvious display of orgasms! Then they jumped into "Do The Strand" and then "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" and others. It was at least halfway into the set before they even acknowledged that beast which is the Top 40. It was heaven, and I generally HATE stadium shows for just that reason.
Its gotta be a musical bitch doing stadium shows -- almost the rich man's equavalent of wedding bands. People who come to stadium shows get pissed if you don't play it note for note what's on the album. I remember when Eric Clapton when on his "Nothin' But The Blues" tour, and he even pre-announced that he wasn't going to do his latter day hits, he wasn't gonna do "Cocaine", -- he was gonna do "Nothin' But The Blues". You wouldn't believe (or you probably would not only believe, you'd expect) all the stupid ass yuppies calling the classic hits stations whining that Clapton didn't do "Wonderful Tonight", that he did all this "blues stuff that nobody knows". Actually, I wish I'd been there. It sounds like it was wonderful. Or when Phil Collins assembled a big band orchestra, got behind his trap set, and went on tour. Even told people he wasn't doing his hits like "in the air tonight" and such. He just wanted to get behind the drums and have some fun with the kind of music he grew up with and still had a passion for. People were pissed. Really sad. I bet that was a wonderful show too.

I'd love to see Bowie again.... and a Bowie / Black combination would be great... if you listen to Fashion on Bowies 50th Anniversary, Frank says 'You'll have to play 50th'.... so who knows, maybe in a few years time when Frank hits 50 they get together again.
War....... Its not fantastic |

The duet on 'Scary Monsters' is awesome... Bowie's band at their very best, while the Dame and Frank swap vocals, on what is a real rocker of a song. Worth a download... |
