Fucking amazing show! I'll write more about it tomorrow, but it really was a hell of a show. I managed to chat a bit with Frank, who says hello to everyone at frankblack.net. Ain't you all happy now?

AAAAHh So good to see the man back in France. Amazing show, Frank played four or five new songs, lot of pixies stuff, nothing from cult of ray and pistolero.

Some more thoughts: that was a very good show indeed. New songs played were Horrible Day, Goodbye Lorraine, New House Of The Pope, Massif Central (!!). No Manitoba unfortunately. A lot of Pixies songs also, which was actually cool given that a majority of the people here were waiting for it. I remember Crackity Jones, Cactus, Nimrod's Son, Where Is My Mind, Holiday Song, Mr Grieves, Wave Of Mutilation, Caribou (!) and the best one, freakin' Velouria! I didn't know he'd play that one. And among his solo songs, Los Angeles, Brackish Boy, Abstract Plain, Headache, All My Ghosts, Robert Onion, The Swimmer, Bullet, The Black Rider, California Bound, Cold Heart Of Stone, Jane The Queen Of Love, Whiskey In Your Shoes, and a cracking version of The Shrimp Song, first in a hilarating French spoken version, then in english. That makes 27 songs packed up in a hour and a half. Highlights of the gig were fucked up versions of Cactus and Crackity Jones (the latter opening the concert with Frank barking and doing crazy stuff while singing), Massif Central which I had never heard played acoustically, an amazing version of Velouria and a very cool Los Angeles mixed with Guthrie's Coming Into Los Angeles. The audience was very nice in general, receiving very well the new songs (esp. Massif Central and its "hills of central France" line). The venue is actually a boat, holding about 200 people, and the sound was quite good. I brought a minidisc recorder, and from what I heard, the sound came out very well; it was the first time I recorded a concert, and there is a bit of noise because I didn't hold the mike very firmly, but all in all the sound is OK. I don't know if it recorded the entire concert cause the batteries were low, but I have at least the first 10 songs. I'll tell you if I have the whole concert when I charge the batteries, and give you the exact setlist. At the end of the gig, we went up on the deck to have a drink, and 1à minutes later Frank came to have a beer. I got him to sign my Marsist 7" ep and chatted a bit with the Man before everyone noticed he was there. I told him I was part of frankblack.net and that we had heard the Edinburg interview where he mentioned the site, and thanked him for that, and he said "Well tell everyone there I say hello." He was in a very good mood, signed a lot of autographs and posed for photos. What else... oh yeah, Frank introduced New House Of The Pope by saying "C'est une chanson de Chateauneuf-du-Pape", and I had never realized the fact. Once you know he sings about his favourite wine, the song sounds really funny. No doubt I'll buy a bottle the day I buy the new album.

Velouria AND Caribou, that does sound like a great show... I didn't think he'd bring either of those back, certainly not the latter. Very cool. Je suis verte avec ummm.. envy. |

I was also at the show and really enjoyed it, both the man and the music...But what did he have in his fnac bag ? It was so nice to see him so cool, I met him when he was walking to the Batofar and looked so cool...He just sayed Hi with a big smile...I guessed it would be a great show and it was ! I also took pictures with him and his "handmade" cigarette...very nice ! Please if somebody could make it available on MP3, at least some of the highlights of the show (Velouria, Massif Central, Cold heart of stone,...) I would be so happy ! Is there a chance my wish could be realized?? It would mean that FB fans are at least as cool as FB himself !! |

I was also there, and it was the first time i saw frank in his solo experiences. Amazing. He was chatty, smiling and seems to realy enjoy the moment. Very different from his concerts with the catholics. Caribou was one of the highilights, shouting "repents" like on the original tune. the end of where is my mind was also funny... Nice to see him trying to speek french; The audience was very receiptive and not only for the pixies stuff. Abstract Plain, Black Rider, los angeles, Robert onion were specially acclaimed. but i wonder : what did he have in his little bag except a camer ? Because the man shoots us with his camera before and after the show. |

i was here too and i recorded the show. i've put an extract on my site (see my signature for the link). the show was excellent, many new songs, 28 songs played in about 80 minutes. in my recording i've only missed the beginning of the encore (caribou :-()
i think i can start a french tree for this or make some trades if there's not too much demands. french people mail me in french so i'll can see where you are from.

they both came out really well.... but i think that mr pinks is better. yours, totom, suffers a bit because it is quite heavily biased towards the left side, whereas mr pinks is more centred.... but apart from that it's a great recording, and on parwith mr pinks.

thanks mr. pink. 03 is amazing. "they've" always said that frank "really" sings on that song and this version strengthens that theory. awesome song that has aged very gracefully.

i can't hear the extracts, damn!
but another friend of mine just told me mine was better, because louder.
on my version, there's some little noise on low tracks (la chanson de la crevette for example) and sometimes noise due to me touching the mic (i didn't have my ideal shirt with a button near the neck)

Here's the complete setlist thanx to totom's recording (I hope I didn't do any mistake because I don't know the very new songs very well; the only song I really don't know is "California Bound" but as vilainde wrote it was played I used it for the missing title : track 23, between "Velouria" and "The Holiday Song"; "Massif Central" reminds me the TOTY era; I didn't listen to the last 2 songs when I wrote this, so I don't know if there are some flaws...). Totom, could you tell me the generation for the CDR ? Did you burn my copy deirectly from the WAVs on your PC ? Mr Pink, if you wouldn't mind to trade this show (provided your recording includes a full version of "Caribou"), it would be very nice ! Here's a link to my bootlist : http://mapage.noos.fr/jpflori
Frank Black (solo acoustic show) 2003/06/27 - Batofar; Paris, FR AUD/MD Marantz EM-8 > Sharp MD-MT190 > CDR 79 min
Setlist :
Set : 1. Crackity Jones 2. Bullet 3. Brackish Boy 4. Jane the Queen of Love 5. Cactus 6. All My Ghosts 7. La chanson des crevettes 8. The Shrimp Song 9. Nimrod's Son 10. (I Wanna Live on an) Abstract Plain 11. The New House of the Pope 12. Whiskey in your Shoes 13. Horrible Day 14. Massif Central 15. Where is my Mind? 16. Headache 17. Robert Onion 18. Goodbye Lorraine 19. Mr. Grieves 20. The Swimmer 21. Cold Heart of Stone 22. Velouria 23. California Bound 24. Los Angeles > Coming into Los Angeles 25. The Holiday Song 26. Wave of Mutilation Encore : 27. Caribou (cut) 28. The Black Rider
Notes :
Thanx totom for the recording ! The concert took place in a barge on the Seine. The venue can't hold more than 300 people. Frank was really nice, he took two photos of him and the crowd before the concert and plugged/unplugged himself his guitar which looked very used and scratched. The sound wasn't very good but it sounds nicer on the recording. "La chanson des crevettes" is a French spoken version of "The Shrimp Song" that he sang in English hust after. Really funny ! He introduced New House Of The Pope by saying "C'est une chanson de Chateauneuf-du-Pape", a French wine !
Flaws :
Noise at the beginning of "La chanson des crevettes". Some noise on "Wave of Mutilation". Beginning of "Caribou" cut.

Great stuff. Thanks for providing it!
Your recording sounds quite good for the conditions it was made in.
There's plenty of low-end rumble from Frank's guitar but that's a PA problem. The only think that irked me while listening to these tracks (especially on Caribou) was the annoying off-key "singing" by members of the audience.
The performance itself was wonderful, but it was virtually ruined by that caterwauling from the crowd.
Go back and listen to the boots from Dylan's 1965 and 1966 solo shows. You can hear A PIN DROP.
That's the way I wish all acoustic concerts were. For one thing, it would be much easier for the artist on stage to play their very best without out-of-tune-and-time "backing" from the peanut gallery, and that resounding whoosh of thunderous applause at the end of each song...
Ah well, I'm a complainer.

The ftp is limited to 100Mo per session .. so you'll must work in teamm to have the full show complet (111Mo), the number of user on the fpt is three and i think it will be very difficult to reconnect on the serveur to grap the end of the dl .. but good luck
ftp://eurock2003.servemp3.com port : 8080 log : darkside mdp : ofthejoke
good dl !! :D
