DirecTV is showing a free Bob Marley concert this month and it got me to thinking how cool it would have been to see Marley in concert. So, I was wondering what bands or artists people wished they had seen (but no longer can), perhaps excluding the Pixies.
I'll start off: 1) The Clash - I'm sure they were a hell of a show 2) Dizzy Gillespie - there's many Jazz legends I wish I had seen (Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Blakey, Miles), but Dizzy tops the list for me
I better see Dylan before the chance is gone. |

Well, I'll definitely second The Clash.
1) The Ramones 2) Talking Heads 3) Miss Peggy Lee 4) Blondie
I got to see Ella when I was a little girl, and she was a marvel. I was completely hypnotized.

Meat Puppets (in their early, acid-informed prime) Stooges Captain Beefheart etc.
I feel really lucky to have caught Throwing Muses on their last tour. And Mission of Burma were just as phenomenal last year as (I imagine) they were 20 years ago.
Does Ornette Coleman still tour? |

The Meat Puppets (like Christ said, the original line up with Curt and Bostrom), Black Flag and the Velvets, I suppose. I'm being given a second chance to see Camper Van Beethoven and the original Joe Jackson band; quite nice.

OK, stuff I would've killed to see:
The Velvet Underground, either in the 1960s or the 1990s.
Leonard Cohen. I guess I would've liked any tour, but the disc of the 1979 tour is adorable. I doubt the dark poet will tour again...
the Modern Lovers. I saw a concert of Jo Jo solo and it sucked. But the Lovers... now that could've been great.
The Ramones.
And Jimi Hendrix, of course. I'm not actually a huge fan, but seeing him - that must have been truly special :-) |

Jimi Hendrix
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins (pre-Melon Collie)
The Doors
Charlie Parker
Iron Butterfly (original line-up, with Eric Brahm)
actually, a whole assortment of 60's psychedelic bands (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Love, Jefferson Airplane, 13th Floor Elevators ...more or less almost any band that would have had oil-splash shit projected behind them while playing) |

1966 wasn't the best of times for 18 year old males in the US, unless you're enrolled in college. |

fucking WORD, El Barto. Very well put.
except for the whole 'Nam thing. But I would have probably dodged the draft somehow. Just to sit in San Francisco and soak in goddamn amazing rock music every single night, stoned out of my gourd.

Yes, you damn well should. Especially since if you can deal with the rasp, approximately every other night he's giving some of his best performances of the past decade.
Just to add to the data, folks I deeply regret that I missed in person:
The Velvets The Stooges The Shaggs Jon Wayne The Dead Boys The Modern Lovers The Rolling Thunder Revue The Band Albert Collins Goblin Talking Heads the original lineup of Gong Big Star Zappa The Posies Jandek (did he ever tour at all?) The MC5 Eleventh Dream Day (when they were a quartet) Redd Foxx June Carter Cash Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Oh well...

I agree with mere's choices. BTW, Blondie will come to Paris in November. Should I go to the show? Tickets are a bit expensive and I really don't know if they still have it now (though I liked their comeback album, No Exit).

While there's a bunch of bands I would have liked to see, I'm going to limit my list to those I had a chance to see but for some reason (logistics, money, or just plain ol stupidity on my part) I didn't.
-- r.e.m. in 1982 at this dumpy coffeehouse in Champaign-Urbana -- The Allman Brothers right before Duane bit it (went to see Cheap Trick instead --- DOH!) -- Black Flag at this high school kid's house (it was only announced day of their regular show that it wasn't all ages, so the Flag agreed to play an all ages show at the kid's house before their regular show at the club -- heard it was the place to be) -- Frank Zappa at the UI Assembly Hall, '81 -- Prince at the Peoria Civic Auditorium, '83
give me time, I'm sure there are others, I'll come back and edit, but those are off the top of my head...

Excluding the Pixies, I'll probably never have the opportunity to see Indochine or the B-52's. Ditto for the Ramones.
