Genius and tragedy. It's a shame what happened. Piper at the Gates of Dawn and all the other Pink Floyd B-Sides and tracks that he wrote are terrific. His two solo albums are genius...he writes these simple tunes, but they're catchy as hell and brilliant little gems. Anyone else a big fan?

I totally dig Syd. An amazing amount of creative power lies in that man. One of my favorite acoustic tunes is Dark Globe from the first solo record. |

I haven't heard much "Syd", but Piper at the Gates of Dawn is really great and certainly (though most will disagree) better than Dark Side of the Moon. Also, just this week I saw a video for "Astronomy Domine" on VH1 Classic. |

No, he didn't die, I've just been on a huge Syd Barrett binge (he's a crazy subject to wrap your mind around...it affects my dreams!). Have you guys heard some of the rare and unreleased tracks he did with the Floyd like "Scream Thy Last Scream," "Apples and Oranges," and most importantly "Vegetable Man," a song about himself which reflected his then-current state? It's fucking crazy and sad in a way...the song sounds like a nightmare. It sounds like something you'd hear in a nightmare. It's got a very creepy feeling. I suggest you pick up "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett," Chris. While it might not be as full and rocking as Piper, there are definitely a ton of great, unforgettable tunes on those albums. Oh, I should also say that Syd created some of the most creepy, eerie tunes...he had a way of created such haunting music with such an eerie vibe.

I haven't been able to get into "Madcap". It's one of those CD's I always take with me to force myself to listen to, but I never do. I'm a huge Robyn Hitchcock fan and he's taken a lot of goodies from Syd, but for some reason the original doesn't connect with me.
I love the early Floyd stuff though.

I like Syd Barrett. I have the Piper at the Gates of Dawn LP (a crappy 1983 repressing on the Fame label that is not even in that good condition and I paid $25.00 for it........I am not an intelligent consumer) and the Barrett LP, but I have heard The Madcap Laughs and Pink Floyd's A Saucerful of Secrets, which has one song that was written by Barrett. Barrett, the album, is an excellent justification that Syd had some trouble functioning, but there are still some dang good songs. Baby Lemonade, for example, is brilliant. I believe that "Gigolo Aunt" was actually recorded with the session musicians playing with him in the studio, which is really weird because Syd, as aforementioned, had trouble. I think that the version of "Gigolo Aunt" on the Barrett album is the 15th take recorded. The Madcap Laughs is a more critically acclaimed album. I think the two Barrett studio solo albums (Opel was a compilation) are equal. I like the production on Barrett better than The Madcap Laughs, but the songs themselves are so great on both that I do not like one more than the other. I love "Long Gone". Just thought I would mention that.
By the way, has anyone heard the Syd song "Just Before You Disappear"? I have not myself, but I have heard of it. The song appears on some bootlegs, I know. |

i'm a particular fan of "dark globe" "octopus" and "late night", from the madcap laughs album..
my madcap laughs cd case is extremely warped from being left in the sun one day.. but it's kind of appropriate because the album is odd and warped and fucked up.
isn't that poetic? |

Very poetic. After listening to and loving Madcap, I didn't think Barrett could really be all that hot, but I was proven wrong...it's just as good if not better. Some of the songs feel slightly uncomfortable...some seem as if he was making them up as he went along. They have a certain amateurish feel to them, but the quality of the music and the words, for some reason, is far beyond amateur. Waving My Arms in the Air is a fucking brilliant song, and it's simple as pie, but it's BRILLIANT. As someone so troubled, these songs are so lighthearted and "cute"...he's just an extremely facinating person to me.

I have always been a Pink Floyd fan but I never had anything earlier than Ummagumma. I picked up Piper just a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. I have realized that I use this site more than any other to find new music. Now I must check out more of Barrett's work.
Now, if I can just convince you guys to look into Porcupine Tree, I think you would be impressed. I have three of their albums now and have a fourth one on order. I found them by reading an article in a Streetside Record mag. A group called Opeth listed these bands as a big influence on them: Cressida,Camel,Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd. |

Isn't Piper THE greatest psychedelic album of all time? Much as I like Sgt. Pepper's, it always struck me as being ABOUT psychedelia whereas Piper IS psychedelia. Any other legitimate contenders? |

I agree. I never really looked at Sgt. Pepper as being a psychadelic album at all...As great as the Beatles are, I think they're sort of fo-psychadelic. Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour are about as close as they get...the only thing psychadelic about Sgt. Pepper is their costumes. Wow...I really haven't been kind to the Beatles lately. I think I lost a little bit of appreciation for them. But yeah, I haven't really been exposed to a whole lot of purely psychadelic albums, but Piper definitely takes the cake for the albums I have heard.

Octopus, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Scream thy Last Scream. I love all that stuff, absolutely a huge influence for me. I guess Syd's living a relatively peaceful life tending to his garden. Sure beats rubbing Mandrax into your hair...anybody else remember that story?? |

I heard the story...weird shit. Not to sound morbid or anything, but it sure as hell would have been interesting seeing them play live during his breakdown. Standing there tuning down his guitar while the rest of the band tries to play along? Wild.

You're the guys to ask. I know that Wish You Were Here was a tribute to Syd, but a guy I work with says that Dark Side of the Moon also was in reference to Syd.
No money riding on this one. Just curious. |

I'm no Floyd expert, but from what I understand, Syd is a recurring theme in their music. It's kind of a joke and an obvious truth that Roger Waters has an obsession with madness...whether this is because of Syd (probably) or not, I'm not sure. There are songs on The Wall which were about Syd, there are scenes in the movie which were about Syd...so he's obviously a recurring theme from their first non-Syd album onward. DSOTM, from what I understand, is about the decent into madness...one man's decent? I don't know. So, yeah in a way I guess you could say it's about Syd, because that's obviously what happened to him. Whether or not it's directly about him, I don't know. It's a fucking wonderful album, though.

I also heard that they hadn't seen syd for a long time and coincidentally, when they recorded Wish You Were Here, he walked into the studio. |

Yeah, very weird. It was during, of all songs, the "Shine On..." sessions (which is directly about Syd).
