I just got a copy of this album given to me from someone at Cooking Vinyl a couple of weeks ago, I have to say this album is superb. This is the first non-pixies stuff that I've heard of Frank Black's, I loved the Pixies stuff, which was a logical progression from Nirvana as I was growing up in my teens. I have to say I would never have considered buying any of his solo stuff! However I can't believe how good it is, Manitoba, the final track is brilliant. Is all his stuff this good? Any recommendations?

I had a dream that I got my hands on SMYT last night, you can imagine my disappointment when I woke up.... It was comparable to the dreams when I was a kid of owning all of the Star Wars figures, or having Princess Leia on the end of my..... and then waking up to find out it was not true.

I don't understnad when people say they love the Pixies but never listened to any Frank solo stuff. Frank wrote like all the Pixies songs - hello! (okay not ALL, but you know) Anyway, YES, all Frank stuff is that good. Start with Teenager of the Year, I think.

I think that if you love the Pixies and you're going from that angle, then start at the top: orange (his self-titled one). Then again, if you loved Show Me Your Tears, then maybe reverse order wouldn't be that horrible idea, in which case, you need to pick up Devil's Workshop AND Black Letter Days. Long story short, you can't go wrong.

And Stuart/Jop, I 'preciate the Star Wars references. Dave & I are working on a way that we can have Imperial March play every time someone reads one of my posts.

i was in my highschool band, and i tried to convince my band director to play the imperial march instead of pomp and circumstance at graduation as the graduates walked out, since the song was in our repitoire and the band plays at graduation (and pomp and circumstance sucks). he loved the idea but wouldnt let it actually happen hah.

you know what, i NEVER understand that either. on more than a few occasions i've encountered people who say they LOVE the Pixies, but hate frank blacks stuff.

i can't reconcile that. if you really LOVED the Pixies, how could possibly not like Frank Black? at least, part, or most, of his work..

It's true, IMHO.

At least people who say they "hate Frank Black's solo work" have LISTENED to it. What boggles me most is the people who LOOOVE the Pixies, yet haven't even thought about listening to the solo stuff.

Frank wrote all the Pixies songs. Ok not every single one, but enough to say he wrote all of them. No one should ever say in a sentence: "Frank Black and Kim Deal were the ones who wrote the Pixies songs." It's just not right. It's like saying "Frank Black and Lyle Workman are the ones who wrote those Catholics songs."

I'm sure if Kim never wrote any Pixies songs, no one would be missing anything. How many DID she write? 2? 3?

though she co-wrote a few

because Charles said: The band makes pizza's not cookies

(Joey Santiago in Mojo Magazine about splitting up, he's refering to the whole Kim Deal and Frank situation)

But I have to say Kim wrote many great songs (Cannonball, No aloha, Doe, Safari, Iris, Dedicated, Tipp city, Pacer, Full on Idle, Huffer, Off you)
The Pixies could have even been better if she would have written some of their songs. But I do understand Frank, it was his band. Why didn't he just kick her out?

Áhh, So many quetions never to be answered. (read: Do not answer them, this is supposed to be about Show me your tears. Man I love Everything is new)

I would actually prefer a fan who loves the Pixies but haven't heard any Frank stuff as opposed to one who loves the Pixies but hates Frank's stuff. Because the latter is obviously a snobby indie kid who hasn't given his solo stuff a chance. You can picture the type listening once and almost being glad they don't like it, so they can sign on the internet and proclaim how much is sucks. Luckily this type of behavior is being weeded out, it's now frowned upon to outright dismiss Frank's solo work (Teenager being a now established "classic")

That'd be awesome. We didn't have a highschool band, but it was a candidate for the grand march at our school too. Ended up being "Time of Your Life" by Green Day instead. <shudder>

Green Day, you are young Dean. My high school grad song was Wind of Change by the Scorpions.

Holy shit Stuart, I used to have those dreams, only replace Star Wars with GI Joes. I still have dreams about Simpsons toys (which I collect)...I'll have a dream where I'd come across a rare prototype or an old, unavailable toy which is on sale for super cheap. Gotta love it!

i'm a frank black fan, but it is perfectly understandable why some people like the pixies and not frank black as a solo artist. his sound and song structures have vastly changed. i like both periods - but it doesn't mean someone who doesn't is an idiot.

If you're my sister, then shouldn't there be more sass than ever? :)

... and for the record, Speedy M happens to be less than a month older than me (his birthday is actually coming up on Saskatchwan Day...). There, I said it. Now go forth and spread the news of a regal celebration.
