Some of you who went to see Frank Black in his Cult of Ray tour (1996) may remember his opening act, Jonny Polonsky. Frank helped him get a record deal with American Records. Anyways, we haven't heard that much from him since his debut album, "Hello, my Name is Jonny". He was dropped from American, and is quite active again....i managed to get my hands on a new demo, and Jonny's all grown up and kicking ass. You can listen to his demo on his website: www.jonnypolonsky.com
What are your impressions of him as the opening act in '96? |

Cool. Thanks. I DO remember seeing him on Frank's tour and my friend who was with me still raves endlessly about his CD. Thought he was pretty cool in '96. He jumped on his guitarists shoulders while playing HIS guitar, not something you forget really. |

According to his Bio, he left American for Epic, but didn't make it into Epic. |

Where's Johnny Polonsky?
Who cares is the answer.
Obviously some of you do, but that stuff was bad. |

Thanks frank black francis! Hi My Name Is Jonny is a great little record. Went to a greek food festival a couple of weeks ago, and my husband kept humming "Uh-Oh" as he ate his souvlaki and hoping that it wouldn't be the death of him. |

'Hi My Name is Jonny' is a sweet album. Only 30 minutes (or less) long, but a entertaining 30 minutes.
I emailed him a while ago and he said he has recorded a new album but needs a label. I too got that new 5-6 song demo album and it's great. It's got some old school Jonny elements but I also think he has matured in his song writing. I think the drummer from a Perfect Circle plays drums on a couple of the new songs by the way.

3rd rate Matthew Sweet. Maybe his newer material is better, but that first album is real plain jane, generic power pop. |

I remember Jonny Polonsky. Still have his album as a matter of fact. Interesting thing about that album, he played every single instrument and recorded the whole thing himself. Down in the basement of his parent’s home if I’m remembering right. He got the record deal by sending tape after tape to Frank’s house and finally after throwing a ton of them away, Frank’s curiosity got the better of him and he had a listen. The rest is (obscure) history. While it was a good listen when first bought, the album is a little shallow and doesn’t hold up well after repeated listens.
I too seen him open for Frank on the Cult tour. He was really really wasted and kept wobbling back on forth on the edge of the stage. Eventually he wobbled too far, and fell mid-song off the stage and into the crowd (the top of his guitar hit my then girlfriend (now wife) in the shoulder, drawing a littl e blood in the process. Some of us helped him to his feet while others picked the mike stand up and put it back on stage. The weirdest part was the rest of the band kept right on playing the song, like this sort of thing happened every night and they were used to it. When he got back on stage he immediately went right back into the song and sounded good. Which was a minor miracle the state he was in. He was lucky if he could stand. I’ll never forget that one.
Yours Truly, Bart |

Hi everybody,
Some fresh news of the great Mr. Polonsky : - The man released his second album ("There's Something Wrong With You") in 2001. You should all know that and buy it !! - He moved from Chicago to L.A. in 2002. - The same year, he recorded a 12-song album including some of the best rock songs I've ever heard ("Let Me Out", "Shitstorm", "Even the Oxen", "Calling All Babies", "Wiser"). That album was partially mixed by Nick DiDia himself. - Mr. Polonsky is still searching for a new label !!! - Please visit his site and encourage him !
A french fan.

I saw Johnnt on the Cult of Ray tour at the Vic in Chicago. He was wild. He had this one great song that I can't remember the title to but it had a great guitar jam in it. While he was playing guitar, the Bass player, during the song now, knelt down, and Johnny, still playing, got on his shoulders and took a shoulder ride around stage while they played. I am always skeptical of opening acts, and didn't care much for the reverend horton heat, but Johnny was impressive. I hope he does well, and I would recommend he join the program (the 12 step program that is). |

I confirm, Jonny plays currently with Carla Werner, who has a record coming out. Some time ago he was on tour with the Jayhawks and the Thorns. |

Actually, the tour ends tomorrow in Los Angeles. I'm going to check it out since the lineup looks good. |

Saw Jonny with Carla Werner last night at the House of Blues. Great show. He's in top form. Forgot they've got one last show at the HOB in Anaheim on Saturday. Anyway, heard word if you sign up for his mailing list he'll send you a sampler of the new album that coming out. Also, Carla Werner has an album coming out next week. She also has some free samplers by the merch booth too. Everyone's got samplers ;) |

I just read this on Johnny's message board, I checked out some of the MP3s and they were pretty funny:
Hi there
The new Jonny Polonsky rock and roll is still in the final production stages, but to tide you over:
The re-release of the early recordings of The Amazing Jonny Polonsky, available for the first time EVER in compact disc format! You can get it at www.cdbaby.com/cd/polonsky.
These are the original recordings of all the shit that got Frank Black, Rick Rubin, etc. hot on my jock. Some songs are funny and twisted, ala Ween, some are early demos for Hi My Name is Jonny, ala Jonny Polonsky.
All right, enough of my third person referencing, go get them recordings!
Kisses, JP |
