Okay, this may be obvious, but does Oddballs remind anyone else of mostly tracks that should have been on the Cult of Ray but weren't?

Several of the songs on there are B-sides to the cult of ray.

"Baby That's Art," "Village of the Sun," and "Everybody Got the Beat" are all from the COR era. Not sure off the top of my head the others. Someone else can jump in.

I really dig the Oddballs album. Does anybody else like
Village of the Sun? "Well I've been hanging downside-up, feeling
really banged up". I love that shit. How about Pray a Little Faster? I was singing that in the grocery store today. "You can
do what you want to do, so get out your voodoo!" One of the reasons
I think Frank Black has endured over the years is because he really
knows how to fuck around with ideas and say things differently than
other people. Baby That's Art.

Yeah, there's no way that Oddballs should be a B-sides album. Village of the sun is awesome, and what about Man of Steel?! And Jumping Beans... need I continue?

Actually 10 of the songs on Oddballs are Cult of Ray-era

"Remake/Remodel" and "Just a Little" were b-sides for one of the two "Men in Black" singles.

And the X-Files album with "Man of Steel" was released just a few months after Cult of Ray so that song was likely recorded either during or near the Cult of Ray sessions.

So that leaves just 4 songs that aren't Cult of Ray-era (unless "Jumping Beans" is -- that performance of the song was never released previously). Three are from one of the 1994 "Headache" singles.

I like pretty much all of Franks stuff, but quite a few of the tunes on Oddballs (Announcement, Just A Little, Man of Steel and a few more) do nothing for me. Saying that, Pray A Little Faster, Remake / Remodel and the COR b sides are very good.

War....... Its not fantastic

I didn't even know Man of Steel was on Oddballs for a long time... I always thought it was written specifically for Songs in the Key of X, until about a year ago. But I love that song more than I can say, especially the end with all that awesome percussion.

It might be "COR era" but they Oddballe has a really different feel to me. I think the diversity of the album is really telling. I think COR is more of a fun album, Oddballs more of a statment album. Same era, different concepts.

I think the different feel to Oddballs from Cult of Ray is largely due to Frank's remixing. The original mixes of most of the songs had straight up Cult of Ray production, but Frank mixed them to sound like Catholics recordings.
