I have always thought he says 'Ride a tire down River Euphrates', but I have seen lyrics on two sites with 'Ride a tiger'. What do you think?

I think he says both actually..!
In the choruses it sounds like he says 'tire' the first few, then tiger on the last. He definately says 'tiger' at the end of the studio recording..
Listening to five different boots of the song i have, he says 'tire' more frequently..but he definately says 'tiger' too. Except for one i have (from '89 i believe, called 'Give Me Ecstasy', the vox are high in the mix, and he doesn't say tiger once...the rest it definately *sounds* like 'tiger' is in there.)
He could sing(scream) 'ride the tire..ride the tide or...ride a tiger..'
Robyn Hitchcock frequently changes lyrics in songs, quite amusing..and the biggest Neil Young site, HyperRust, has a section of lyrics that people *thought* they heard.. Like, i thought it was 'Wave of Human Nation' or something the first time i heard 'WoM'. =)

Actually... he is probably saying "Tigris". The Tigris river is parallel to the Euphrates river over in the Middle East. Both rivers I believe start in Turkey, go thru Syria and Iraq, and empty into the Persian Gulf. It's common to hear "The Tigris and Euphrates" together, especially in the Bible.

I'm almost sure he says Tiger. Isn't the song about the fact he can't drive his car anymore ,cause he was out of gas?
So he propably ride a tiger instead of it.

theres also the tiber (or tibre, i forget) river thats somewhere around there. i just remember reading about it in latin class haha. although it does sound mostly like hes saying tiger. it wouldnt make much sense if he was riding another river down a second river, although hes been known to lack in the sense department. -mike |

I always figured it was "tire." It seems to make the most sense, although it does sound like tiger on occasion. |

do you get tigers in the garden of eden area? (the garden's supposed to have been between the euphrates and the tigris i think - can't recall all my sunday school knowledge) All tourists come on safari in south africa expecting to find the place riddling with tigers. which isn't so at all. unless you go to the city zoo. and we aint got bears either. |

It's almost definitely 'tyre' all the way through the studio b-side version, although the album version does seem like a bit of both. I think 'tyre' makes more sense though - they float after all, and so "ride a tyre down the river Euphrates" would be a bit more practical than riding a tiger ...... maybe less fun though ;-)

if you're stuck out of gas on the gaza strip, i'd have to say it seems (more) logical thing to jack the car, take the wheel off, and float downstream till you find someone to help you - than to find a tiger to ride. i vote ride the tyre. i could even be good fun i imagine, i went "kloofing" once don't know if that's an english word, but basically you lilo down a river - with some friends - over a few days, carrying all your essentials in a watertight rucksack, and sleep on the river bank sand (on your lilo) - good fun roughing it up , up against nature's elements |

Not sure we can apply too much logis to it as neither the Tigris or Euphrates are very close to the Gaza Strip |

I've always thought it was "tyre". And watching videos of live footage, his mouth looks like he is singing "tyre". Charles, if you drop in on this thread, please put us out of our misery and give us the definitive answer!

Would an IM to FB not work better than casting around here? In fairness to him, this is not a forum area I would be *too* inclined to visit...
