Hey everybody, I'm new here and I was wondering if anybody could help me with the lyrics of Ed Is Dead because I might cover it with my band. I can make out most of the words except for the end of the first verse:
I'll think of her when I walk the strand on this true (sounds like "hormosa night" except "hormosa" isn't really a word).
Any ideas?

Frank uses the word "Hermosa" (however it's spelled) in several songs, including the new record. My assumption is that "strand" is a beach or stretch of sand along the water (someone out there must know the real definition) and Hermosa refers to particular place, or part of the strand. This is just a guess on my part. |

Thanks speedy, I didn't know it was a recurring word but your explanation makes sense, I also had the feeling "strand" was a beach reference. |

i never thought about it before, but he could be refering to Hermosa Beach, in So. Bay (in and around where he grew up [among other places])..
the "strand" is pretty much like the "boardwalk".. like you have on most popular beaches.. just don't go to one unless you have a cool strand cruiser :)
Random House College Dictionary says:
strand - "the land bordering the sea, a lake, or a river; shore."

more importantly, does anyone actually know who ed is supposed to be, or supposed to represent, if anything... ? |

i think the ed is dead in there (as most online lyrics for pixies) might be a little off..
i'm pretty positive that he says "she got no got no tarot cards".. not "fear of cars".
so what the hell is a hormos a night supposed to be? |

If your totally sure about that line you should submit a corection to the site. As for the Hormos a night thing I have no idea, I thought it may have been a Spanish word or something but freetranslation.com didn't shine any light. Oh well, I'm sure I won't any lose sleep :) |

its gotta be about that Hermosa Beach that floop mentioned - in ed is dead its 'walk the strand on this true Hermosa night' and in Everything Is New its "he used to play that club down at Hermosa Strand" |

Well floop, I think you probably nailed it. If there is a "Hermosa Beach", then that's probably what he is talking about. He mentions a "true Hermosa night" in Ed is Dead, which could mean it was like typical night on Hermosa beach. He talks about heading "to the strand down by the sea", in So. Bay, which as floop pointed out, is where Hermosa Beach is. He also says "he used play that club down at Hermosa Strand" in Everything Is New. I must visit this place.... must be an interesting spot. |

Wow, not only is that lyrics site possibly the worst pop-up hell I've ever been unfortunate enough to visit, but this takes the biscuit:
quote:
She's just rotting in stupid bliss With music on her bars uh Her face burning in the L.A. sun She got no got no fear of cars I better kick my strand cruiser To the friendlier oh oh oh oh oh oh
Here's what I have, taken from a lyric sheet I got from 4AD years ago (BTW Kim says on the 'Long Live the Surf Guitar' bootleg, "when Charles used to live in LA, there was this girl who used to ride around on a bicycle; this song's about her")...
Ed is Dead
Her head is in a better* way Her brain's on fire She's just looking for the perfect wave It's her brain's desire I'll think of her when I walk the Strand On this true Hermosa night
Ed is Dead
She's just riding in stupid bliss With music on her bars Her face burning in the LA sun She got no got no fear of cars I'll dedicate my strand cruiser To the memory of her own
Ed is dead
[* Sounds like 'bitter' to me, but that's what the sheet said!]

There is no WAY that is what you noticed in that picture... Of course, if she were to bring said foodstuffs, then said foodstuffs would belong to the village idiot. Since I don't see him around, she's mine! |

I never noticed the pop-up's myself as I use this handy little free program...

Thinking about it, if this song is about a cyclist the 'shes got no fear of cars' line would make more sense than the 'Tarot cards' perception, right?

that's a good point guy.. there's a solo performance recording where it really sounds like "tarot cards".. but maybe ed is dead is about someone getting run over on a beach cruiser or strand cruiser..
as for Hermosa Beach speedy, it's very nice and all, but nothing you'd want to go out of your way for. it's very Vollyball, jock-asshole oriented unfortunately. like Newport Beach and other places.. lots of rich, white people who graduated from USC..
but there are some great breakfast places, and the eye candy factor is something to take in mind as well.
it probably wasn't like that 10 years ago though.. and i'm sure that among all the vollyball playing rollerbladers, there are plenty of cool people in Hermosa. that's the overall feel though.. |

so who the fuck is ed though??!!!
now i really want to know.. i wonder if there is any connection between ed is dead, So. Bay and this new song.. even though in Ed is Dead it's a she.. maybe it's not..
this whole "he used to play down at the hermosa strand" thing makes me think ed is dead, and Everything is New, may, like MANY of his songs, be about one of his obscure musical heros.
or not. |

That's an interesting theory, but I'm starting to think 'Ed' could possibly be 'Edwina' or something, who maybe died in a traffic accident hence the 'I'll dedicate my strand cruiser, to the memory of her...' This would also make sense out of the 'She's just riding in stupid bliss' as she was probably blissfully unaware of whatever hit her. On a different note, there's a few songs from the big man's cataologue to feature traffic imagery, i.e. 'Drive my car into the ocean', 'He was smashed head on by a giant truck' and who could forget 'Won't you please run over meeeeeeeee!!!!'
I wonder if Frank will ever play 'Ed is dead' live again. It's one of my favourite Pixies songs. |

i'm with guy too.. it definitely seems to be about a girl getting run over on her beach cruiser.
the hermosa references are interesting though.. i'm wondering who the guy is in Everything Is New who "used to play at that place on Hermosa Strand" or whatever.. and i'm wondering which place he's talking about.
there's a small strip of wall to wall bars in Hermosa.. he must be talking about one of the places in there. |

I'm going to have to go with Guy's theory too. Maybe
She's just riding in stupid bliss With music on her bars'
means that she was riding along with a walkman on her handlebars or something... |

Actually, "strand" means "beach" in Swedish. And some thousand years ago swedish and english were the same language (after that it of course has developed, swedish borrowing from German and English from French). |

I wouldn't be surprised if he just thought the phrase "Ed is dead" sounded funny (which it does), and decided to write a song around it. I've read a few interviews where he's said a lot of lines in his songs don't really mean anything, but just sounded cool. |

It's 'run over me' -- I seem to recall James Barnard said 'fawn' and got corrected by Frank himself, way back when on the Abstract Plain mailing list!

I read a fairly good description of what was going on in that one blarg. I certainly didn't put it together myself, but in retrospect it all makes sense. Well, as much sense as a Lynch film can make. |
