I was looking up the Frank Black concert online in highschool 2 years ago and my substitute teacher walks by and asks "Oh Frank Black, is he still around?" I said "Yeah! do you know him" He replied..."of course, he opened up for my band..Big Dipper, before the Pixies were famous." This was ridiculous because...i actually know the band Big Dipper! I guess hte Pixies took off leaving Big Dipper in the dust, but they're a good band. |

I'm also a teacher, although I'm the right side of 30 (26). The past two days have been very strange indeed, in two separate classes I have had students ask me 'what music do you like?' Ive mentionned Frank Black & Catholics, Pixies, The Cure etc etc... and has been weird that two different students told me that they thought that Pixies were a cool band. So his influence reaches behind the iron curtain, not that there is an iron curtain here anymore, but its still cool that some Chinese people who have never left China know about Pixies. They haven't a clue who Frank Black and the Catholics though which is a shame... so I might have to turn a class into a listening lesson where I bring in my minidisk, speakers and a slow Frank Black song, give them lyrics with certain words rubbed out, play the music to them and get them to fill in the words that they understand... Hmmm, Stupid Me is probably a good one for this task, although might be too slow... right I'm starting to think aloud.... |

I would have to say that when I read about some of the symbolism that David Lynch used in Twin Peaks that subtly refers to Pixies songs (i.e. Monkey Gone To Heaven) I would say he is the most surprising Frank Black fan to me.

I'm 26 and was turned onto the Pixies while still a freshman in highschool by Kurt Cobain (through a magazine interview where he suggested better bands than his own-- humble guy) Bought Trompe Le Monde and just about had a seizure upon first listen -- blew my little world-- Kind of gave up on it and put it aside until I got into Frank Black years later (through Teenager of the Year) |

The most suprising fan I know....My Airedale terrier - BoBo. Everytime he hears "You Ain't Me" He barks the whole song as to say "Rock On Frank" and runs around in circles - Dancing His Ass Off. |

Well well well... I'm 38, 3 kids and still rocking & thrashing in the pit. But after 3 thrashy songs, I gotta take a break and slow down somewhat. I try to go to 2 or maybe 3 shows a year... FB is a must. I saw Breeders some months ago and Sonic Youth last year.
Its interesting to note how experience allows one to enter and exit the pit while limiting collateral damages. It seems I have developed over the years a good sense on how to judge and read a bouncing crowd correctly. So I can come in the office at 8:30am the following day relatively intact and still rock through the business.

Och, me auld aiken bones! 33 and still listening to the FB! The fact that Frank's music can bridge the (wheeze, crack) unfathomable chasm of age between you upstart young uns and old scholarly folk like us is doubtless a testament to the enduring talents of the man himself. Amazing that he can still crank it out, wizened though he be, at 37.
I was driving along quietly the other day when my 4-year old daughter burst into song: (In tiny, Garbo-esque voice) "I will run after you, I will run after you . . ." Caught her humming Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day yesterday. For many months, only St. Francis Dam Disaster was capable of lulling her to sleep. Last year, my husband choreographed a dance piece to "The Swimmer" and his undergrad kids loved it.
Sooo . . .Frank Freaks, transcend your ageism and unite! |

Forgot to mention this earlier, but, the guy who plays Toni Soprano's nephew on the Sopronos (Christopher) was at the final Toronto gig. Didn't expect to see him there.

I was first introduced to FB about '96 or so in San Antonio, listening to a college-ish radio segment of the local rock station on a Sunday night. They were interviewing Frank, and I was starting to listen more closely because of the witty, educated banter, funny jokes, etc., and at the end of the interview he goes into an unplugged version of Men In Black. I could not BELIEVE that much intensity could be put into an acoustic version of any song, and I was immediately hooked. Anyway, the next day I found out that a co-worker of mine, a Latino guy from California who usually had more Metal-ish or Industrial tastes in music (big-time worshipper of Trent Reznor), had also been an FB fan for years. He had an entire other collection of such bands as the Cure, the Fall, Psychedelic Furs, etc., for, as he said it "when I'm in that kind of a mood".
