I know that lyric comes from Negative Creep but I'm pretty damn sure they ripped it of from somewhere else, I know it but I can't remember it. |

Sweet young thing aint' sweet no more. Mudhoney. Can't remember the song title. He also semi ripped off Levitate Me's "if all in all is true" with All Apologies's "all in all is all we all are". According to him anyway. "Homage", I guess.... |

Well, I'm glad she called attention to the issue, being Courtney and all, she's going to get more attention than the REAL AUTHOR of much of this material that she PLAGURIZED, Steve Albini. I think Albini's a self-important ass myself, but I loathe plagurizers even more. |

Here's a link to the Steve Albini article that blackpurse mentioned. Courtney does indeed rip this off quite liberally, both in content and tone. Kudos to her for bringing up these many issues, but the begining of her speech is certainly "inspired" by this peice by Mr. Albini. Also, Courtney seems to be a little disconnected with reality, at the best of times, so I don't know how much it helps to have her champion the cause.

theres just something about courtney love that i can't get out of my system. i know she is a bit of a dick- and becoming increasingly more so- and whenever i hear her say anything i just cringe. but whenever i hear violet its like i'm 13 again. i have the same promlem with the foo fighters. i know they haven't released a good song since everlong but for some reason i can't truely let go of the hope that they'll suddenly be good again. maybe i should get some therapy . |

Well, there were people dissing Avril Lavigne in another thread for being a phony and a fake and contrived, while she makes music that is enjoyed by a younger group of people and this brought that to mind. At the time "Live Through This" was released, there was much hoo-haw about whether Courtney herself wrote that album/song, or if Kurt helped her and such. As a 13-year old, or as any 13-year old, you didn't give a shit. The song stuck in your head and will bring back a time in your life that you may or may not wish to relive -- and that's part of what music does for us. But now I pose the question, why does Courtney have more "cred" than Lavigne? Both are manufactured (perhaps courtney had a bit more say in her own development), both were discovered by record industry types who determined they were edgy enough to put big label money behind them. OK, Lavigne started out younger and greener. What really is the difference?
I find myself agreeing a lot with what Courtney has to say as well, but the fact that often the words aren't hers, and often she talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk is what majorly turns me off big time. |

at the time that i liked courtney love she wasn't phoney or staged- well i don't think anyway. the fact that she looked like a fucking mess the whole time and wasn't attractive in a classical way really appealed to me. she couldn't play the guitar very well and she screamed the songs like she was being buggered by a horse. its like pj harvey when she stared out-she went out of her way to look like shit which is the opposite to what women are supposed to do. not that i'm comparing courtney to pj, pj pisses all over her. |

When PJ first came out I was really sick of what I termed to be women whining about the difficulties of being a woman, I was sick of all the negativity, but out of all of 'em PJ's really won me over with her work (and she's also found beauty in her life lately and its being reflected in her work) and now I can listen to her past stuff and see the greatness. As a 13-year-old, I can't blame Gracie or anybody for being enamored with Courtney when she first broke. She really was contrived from the get-go, but she did have an arresting image. Its just that the more you found out about her and listened closely to her stuff, the more you got turned off, in direct contrast to PJ Harvey, where the more you learned and listened, the more you would find to admire.

personally, i think courtney love needs some help. like rehab. or a lobotomy.
but, i dont think that anyone, regardless of their opinion of her behavior, can dispute that she is a talented musician. listen to "live through this", hole's 1994 album, and tell me she doesn't know how to write a truely kick-ass record. although, a lot of people claim kurt wrote nearly all of it, but whatever. the album is still freaking amazing.

I agree, 'Live Through This' rocks and I think it stands up to the test of time better than Nirvana's albums (forgetting the controversy over who actually penned the songs). |

I would have to disagree Scarla. I traded in my copy of Live Through This long ago, but I still have Nevermind, In Utero, Insceticide, Bleach, Unplugged, Live....etc. I rarely listen to them, but I still think they're great records. The more I found out about Courtney, the more I saw her public persona, the less I felt like listening to her music. I don't doubt Kurt had a hand in the making of that record, they were married at the time, I'm sure the subject of her new songs came up over dinner. |

Yeah, what always turned me off was how Courtney would INSIST that Kurt had no influence on her music, it was all her her her. I freely admit that since meeting and marrying my husband, my music has been greatly influenced by his: I share a house, bed, car with the guy, we hear each other's bands rehearsing in our basement, we go to each other's shows all the time, heck if we didn't start to have each other's stuff bleed into the others there'd be something wrong.

Indeed. What's more natural and normal than for a couple who are musicians to discuss their music? Also, Kurt was a famous and well regarded songwriter, and Courtney was not. She would have been foolish not to seek his council. The same accusations were made about her post-Kurt work, this time Billy Corgan being the ghost writer extraordinaire. I really don't think it matter much, the girl didn't get to the point she is now through sheer talent. Hard work, deterimnation mabye. I'd say more like marrying the right person at the right time, but not through talent. I wonder how poor little Francis Bean will turn out... |

I'll disagree. When you name your band "Hole", you have to expect comments like that. Courtney tried to claim later that it was an excerpt from (can't rememember the greek poet, Homer, perhaps) a poem, "There's a hole that piecers through me." Yeah, right. You named your all-girl band hole to get that kind of attention. Nice try, Courtney. This shit works both ways, girlfriend.

I have no doubts the name "Hole" was meant to be provocative. If that's your game, then go for it, it's not my bag, but if it's her thing, fine. But don't deny it. There's a million great band names out there (most of which have NOT been used, check out Guided By Voices "Suitcase" album for aprox. 100 silly/terrific band names), that one was chosen specifically for the reaction it would receive. Like everything that woman does. Nothing like taking out your breasts every concert. Classy.
I think Francis Bean (the other FB) would be around 10 now. |
