Me and my friend are very enthusiastic musicians, but there's only two of us. I've been playing drums in a band (my friend on bass), but that's been on hold for a while due to the 3rd members personal problems. We both play guitar also, and have around 20 songs all together. When he sings and plays rythm, I play lead, and when I sing and play rythm he plays lead (and some times sing at the same time or different parts of the same song). But what we would love most is for people interested in the same types of music as we are (Frank Black being #1) to play drums and bass for us. I currently have no experience with mp3s, but that would probably be the easiest way for you all to here our music, so I'll see what I can do. I am content in saying that our tunes are not only inovative and origional (lyricaly and musicaly), but some will actually make you stop what ever it is your doing and start uncontrolably dancing like the men and women from the 60's and whatever the hell they call that V thing they do acrossed their eyes. IT'S HAPPENED TO ME, PEOPLE! I know it's not alot to go on, but if your compelled enough to inquire I could send a tape of a few songs we have done on 4 track (w/drums and bass, but there weren't enough tracks for lead)until I get them up on mp3. Oh yeah, we live in upper New York, which probalbly makes quite the difference to most of you. Well, I hope (friggin' pray) some people out there want to be in a cool band with cool people who play music inspired by Frank Black and other unknown (but equally talented) artists. We're gonna rule the world, so join us now and be part of the first government based on music, or perish with the rest of the hell bound political assholes. And justice for all, blah blah blah....

I highly recommend putting your stuff on mp3.com. It worked great for me. After weeks and weeks of meeting people through Craig's List, it just wasn't working. It was a huge pain-in-the-ass just getting people a copy of my demo. (Come on, if we both live in San Francisco, I shouldn't have to mail the guy my demo!) Putting my stuff on mp3.com allowed the filtering process of people who just weren't interested in my stuff to go much, much quicker. That way, the only people who end up responding have already heard the stuff and already know they like it. I got two really good players that way (a bassplayer and a lead guitarist). Best of luck to you, man.

In that case, might someone give me info on how to make and set up an mp3 on mp3.com? Do I have to buy anything or what? Anyones help would be most apreciated. Thanks.

They answer pretty much every question you could ever ask in their FAQ, but basically, for free they allow up to three songs and so forth. It's not a bad idea, especially if you live in a bigger centre. Doesn't do much for those of us trying to create music in smaller cities, though.

I am now signed up, but do I have to have my music on CD to upload it (as opposed to whatever digital things there are, which I don't have), because I'm not sure how to get it from tape to CD either? I guess I'm a little disadvantaged in this whole field, but I'll check out thier help section again. Thanks.

I am 17 and my friend is 18, but don't let that fool you my friend. I'm not going to start bragging, but we're both really good at what we are doing, and we owe it all to Mr. Blacks infuence (as well as other equally talented artists). And,(cough, cough)I'm a damn good writer...(cough). But seriously, everyone in my area wants to play/cover death metal, punk rock (Blink 182, Good Charlotte), or friggin' cover the soft/classic rock stuff like Lynord Skynord and Jack Johnson. It's enough to make a man go postal. All we want is for some people in the same mindset (musicaly) as we are to play OUR OWN songs, not rip off Frank, let alone the cheesy shit that you can hear 20 times a day just by turning on your radio. We're also looking for maybe some multi-talented people who want to express thier own creativity in the foreground, not just back us and shut the hell up. You know, I think this is definately the best place to find the people we are looking for. Although it's a long shot, just look what happened with The Pixies.......

Hmmm... I guess that we're not alone, Mike. I hear you king, so many people, so little good taste or even desire to play good music as opposed to what sells or what makes money. We've tried out many, many more people than I care to discuss, and in the whole process we found _ONE_ person who is what we're looking for, on Monday in fact, but of course he leaves for the east coast at the end of July, so we're just going to go crazy recording, which he is more than happy to do with us. Guess you make do with whatever situations life throws at you one way or the other, so don't lose hope, mkingicus, just do what you can to put together good stuff and don't let mired in the garbage that sometimes goes along with it.

Indeed. Don't get too down M King. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. The talent pool here seems to be pretty shallow, and the filter's broken and there's no chlorine, so it's like, mostly urine. Everyone here also wants to start a "nu metal" or "death metal" band. Such a variety of tastes... in metal! We can find good players, but they like crap. We can find people who like good stuff, but they play like crap. Oy.... Dean and I have decided to forgoe dreams of touring the country in a cramped van becaues we simply can't find enough personel to form a live band. We will simply multi-track our masterpiece and then cry ourselves to sleep listening to it.

You seem to cry yourself to sleep an awful lot speedy. My little brothers are in a metal band, you know the kind where you can't understand even a single word. They're pretty good though, Blacken is their name (yes its a Metallica reference) they did a cover of Take on Me by Aha, oh I know you remember it. Totally heavy but its hilarious.

I think the best thing for me to do may be just to keep recording the drums and shit by myself and not ever worry about playing live, just make an album. That's all I really want to do is to make albums and throw them at people. I guess being the minority has its ups and downs, but I love the music I/we make, so all I can do is rock on in my own little 4 track world until fate decides to poke her head out and say, "Here you bastards," and gives us a better recording system or some band members. I guess I'll just have to learn the brand new Metallica album and cut all the sleeves of my shirts. Oh well, thanks for your support/advice.

Well that sounds interesting. Metal is not my scene. I'm a sucker for a good melody. I don't really see how such a band could be anything but hilarious. Not that I'm trying to insult your brothers. And yes, I do cry myself to sleep a lot. I'm a troubled individual. No girlfriend and no band will do that to you. Not that I'm complaining. Actually, that's exactly what I'm doing. And since I'm already complaing, my ass really hurts because some jackass stole my nice comfortable office chair and I had to scrounge up this piece of crap. The only thing better than being in a cubicle is being uncomfortable in a cubicle.

The computer you're using to post is your best friend when it comes to recording, if you've got the patience/software to do it. A little bit of CoolEdit and a decent sound card to record into goes a long way. Then you don't have to bounce stuff to a mono track and lose all the stereo stuff and you can do a lot of cleaning and stuff that you'd normally have to get a professional to do. 4-track and a computer, it's a great combo.

I personally have to recommend www.soundclick.com. I've been there for years. It's not quite as commercially motivated.. the exposure might not be as good though.. I dunno.
It's simple and has decent features for free.

My origional band just got back to playing a few days ago and have a few free shows coming up in Plattsburgh, NY. If anyones in the area, we'll be playing at a bar called McDoughnas (don't know how to spell it, but it's pronounced McDunnas) on Tuesday the 8th, and an all ages show at some coffee house around the corner from the bar mentioned above on Friday of the same week. I'm sure nobody here has even heard of Plattsburgh, but whatever. Hopefully people like our music, cause it's only rock and roll. We've played so far (in this order), my family reunion (minus our lead guitarist who was just our sound guy at the time), our singer/rythm guitarists wedding (w/out the other guy), and yesterday we play our friends 50th birthday to an audiance of about 12 drunken teens and 10 drunken adults (we started at about 10:30, so everyone had left before the cops could pull them over w/good reason). It sure was a blast, though. Even 20 people under the influence shouting "you rock" can give you good feeling. I can't wait to get some chicks and finally get paid for this shit!

I hope yer not doing this just for girls and money.
Fuck the girls. Fuck the money.
Do it because you love it!
Stick with it and good luck.

PS- I don't mean fuck the girls LITERALLY, or in a misogynistic sense either!

I'm gonna agree with killmocker here... getting paid and getting laid has nothing to do with music. Unless of course you were joshin', in which case, you know, do yo' thing and get yo' bling, my friend.

Killmocker, are you actually from Japan? You may be the only board member from "Nihon" here. The only one that posts, anyway. Kudos and such!

I do the music for the music, cause' it's all I've got anyways. But, you know, everyone wants to get paid to do what they love doing.
