You're not alone. I personally don't want a 'sneak peek' at the album...I'm getting enough of that just reading the forum. I'm going to relish the moment when I actually have the real album, and having never heard it before (except live), throwing it on for that unrepeatable first listen. |

I too won't be downloading it, though I did find a copy of the three track promo that came out a couple weeks ago. Couldn't resist. Had already heard Nadine and Massif Centrale so only Favorite Kiss was new to me. Love it. |

I love the entire record. Love it. Massif Centrale. Wow. I cannot get enough of this song. Really. It sounds like something from Teenager. Really though, the whole thing is beautiful. I'm listening to it right now in fact. Lately I've been drinking at the new house of the pope... |

I totally agree with you about Massif Centrale sounding like a TOTY song....that's exactly what I thought the first time I heard it.... |

Thanks for all of the great reviews. I am trying my best to hold off until the album comes out to actually hear it. On the production side of things where does SMYT fall? Is it a pretty good production? How does it compare production wise to DITS, BLD & DW?
Thanks,
Dan

I agree. And I've got a thousand bucks that says by Xmas everyone else here will agree too; SMYT is a qualitative leap. Whoever riffed on the bus ride scene from 'midnight cowboy' was dead on. There's a lot of earnest seventies kitsch here--if you don't hear Morricone in the arrangements, you need to be checked for monkey pox. It's nice to hear the female voice in Manitoba, something I want to hear in FB&C from time to time and really nicely done here. Overall I'd say the production is really good and the record has a great sound. Not in terms of style but success, it's up there with TOTY production-wise. A truly beautiful perfect gem of a record. The mastery apparent here is startling, really. You thought they were tight on DITS? There is a beautiful undiscovered country awaiting your arrival pilgrim.
PS I'm tired of wading through threads supposedly about SMYT only to find petty moralizing. If you download or not, good for you! If I want to read that garbage, I'll go to the topic called 'download or not'. |

Wait, I actually didn't like the TOTY production, but liked the DITS production. For the unhip, what is Morricone? |

It's not the same style of production as TOTY which, btw, I happen to think is great. Not always, but it works for that album. I mean the production is much richer than on BLD for example. It's got a fat bottom, too. This is an aged and mature music.
Was I being a hip fascist? Sorry about that. Ennio Morricone is the guy who composed all the spaghetti western soundtrax (good the bad the ugly, etc.) and lots of others to boot. I keep hearing the gorgeous soundtrack to 'once upon a time in the west' with charles bronson's baleful harmonica on this album. A fantastic movie featuring henry fonda as a truly wicked man. |

OK, Johnny, you were being a bit too hip for me, but I can see where you're coming from. Spaghetti western! My chef, Mr. Boyardee, inventor of all Italian food and the new Twistaroni, will get a kick out of that. Fat bottom is good, strictly speaking, even if I don't dig the TOTY production, per se. Right on. |

Any more thoughts on 'Everything is New'? Is that Jesse, as in Elvis's stillborn twin, Jesse? |

As a fan of both Frank Black and good use of orchestration in pop/rock music, I was hoping someone would give some sort of detailed review here of Van Dyke Park's orchestral arrangements on SMYT. Which songs contain orchestration? Is it subtle orchestration? Bombastic orchestration? Some details, please.
No moral dilemma prevents me from downloading SMYT and listening for myself; just a butt-slow dial-up modem. |

I think everybody's going to like this disc. After a few spins, " This 'ol Heartache" really stands out, as well as "Jaina Blues" and "Massif Centrale".

There is no "orchestration" in the strict sense of the word, as in a symphony a la beach boys sounding or what have you. It was probably more an arrangement type of thing between the two men.
The song structure, placement of sections was probably what was collaborated upon.
I don't know for sure of course.
Anyway, it's the fucking bee's knees. |

Johnny Horton,
It's not Jessie on Everything is New, Frank actually sings Chesney. Don't know who he is referencing though.

Well, I've already mentioned a 'Morricone' feel to a lot of the songs, and not just in the 'Western' sound that FB has been doing since the Pix. It's more the song structure--you can also hear it in Morricone's non-western film work--and that may be due to VDP. As far as obvious orchestration, certainly Manitoba has that. I think Swimmer said 'Burt Bacharach' and that's apt. It's not string heavy (thank God--way too cliche), but as I said in another post, kinda like 70's kitsch in such a good way. The trumpet at the beginning reminds of some song that's on the tip of my tongue. Like a lot of the music I heard on the radio as a child in the 70's. And "This Old Heartache" is the lost Leonard Cohen classic that you never heard:
'So let's go to Barcelona We will be noted for our absence Deep in ocean blues of absinthe....
..But please know for your own sake I can be a moody guy...
The song writing on this album will 'shuddup you face' all the boring critics who say his work sounds 'unfinished'. There is such a richness and layering to these songs, musically and lyrically. This would be a great album to see on 'Austin City', but like NPR, they are way too tame and bougie (bourgeoisie) to even consider it.
I have dial-up too and it didn't take me long to grab the album, but use soulseek. Start with 'My Favorite Kiss', 'Everything is New' and 'Coastline' and go from there. I don't know why I picked those three songs cause you can't go wrong no matter which ones you start with. Take you about 10-15 minutes per song I reckon.

Well...after swearing to all holiness that may exist that i would NOT download this album but wait like a good boy until it is offically released, I fell off the wagon. Last weekend I did the nasty and snatched it off the internet! Dont get me wrong...I still will purchase the thing when it hits stores in September. As for my analysis of Show Me Your Tears...remember the jolt that came from DITS after the powerhouse of Pistolero? Well, thank you Mr. Black for doing the same again! Although I liked BLD & DW quite a bit, I felt they were somewhat of mirrordust left over from the amazing DITS. SMYT is like a 'welcome home' to the psychoward of difference Charles so delicatley smashes over our heads. It's melodic, dorky, sublime, spooky, thematic, anthematic, bitter, fun, and downright smart. I, like a lot of fans, am growing more and more to absolutely love it the more I hear it. His music is like a martini...it's work! You struggle to get it down, and the more you do, the better it tastes...and the reward is that salty wonderful olive! And that Masiff Centrale! My goodness! What a song! Seems as if he's pulled a fast one and purposely left MC off TOTY JUST to keep us around listening! Beautiful!

I still haven't downloaded it, and that's how I felt when I heard Nadine on the radio. It blew my fucking ears off. Words could not even describe how it sounded. I can't wait to hear the rest of it. From live recordings, Massif Centrale is my favorite song so far |

i agree with TOTIPOTENT, that falsetto is one of the most thrilling bits of that song, especially the way he goes deeper and higher again during it, if you know what i mean, which you probably don't.
