SHOW ME YOUR TEARS
is the best FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS recording of ALL TIME.
It is the best FRANK BLACK period.
1. Nadine - "When I see Nadine, I want that" Sweat dripping lust served up on a tom-tom beat and a Slap-you-in-the-face-back delay on the vocals. Like a doo wop song gone juvenile delinquent. Frankie Lymon and the Fucking Vampires.
2. Everything is New - Tinkle-ing piano over a four on the floor beat and a 16th beat piano. If Chuck Berry went to College. Wow. Amazing.
3. My Favorite Kiss - Just when her mouth is warm. In 7 Days I'll be in Baltimore. In one more minute I'll be gone AND THEN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LICK/CHORD CHANGE I HAVE HEARD ON A NEW SONG IN A LONG TIME. Harmonica played by Stan Ridgeway which gives it a strong "Midnight Cowboy" Bus trip song vibe.
4. Jaina Blues - Exile on Main Street still slips out of these cats in a strong, strong way. This is vintage 70's stones. Delta Bottleneck Stomp, that's the Jaina Blues. Scewed by only the way our man can. Beautiful Bass Work. The best I've EVER HEARD DAVE.
5. - New House of the Pope - I jumped into the river, they called the New House of the Pope. The Liquor song to end all Liquor songs. You thought Whiskey in your Shoes was reason enough to understand why Reid Paley goes out with them all the time.
6. Beautiful Day/Horrible Day - From the English Pub to the Honky tonk Bar. Pure Grade A USDA Choice Honky-Tonk run through Zen Buddhism, where the singer finally realizes the duality and decides the there is no bad or good, just different choices. You can see by my Grin I don't give a fuck. He dropping the use of "Luck" and making things happen himself. Or not. It doesn't matter which one is better.
7.Masif Centrale - is the coolest fucking song. This song is everything I ever wanted from Frank Black and the Catholics. You thought "Jane Queen of Love" was the shit? Well, make way for KING SHIT OF FUCK MOUNTAIN.
8.When Will Happiness find Me - Frank gets his wish to record on a Wax Cylinder, but the band brings this back from the Corned Beef and Cabbageness of it all. Don't ask me, just listen. It will make sense I promise. Happy Sad song.
9. Goodbye Lorraine - Right back into Robert's Western Wear. (Some folks will get that.)
10. This Old Heartache - Queen Territory to begin with, into a samba beat. Very sexy. Beautiful Latin number. Lyrics that wap you in REEEEECH CORINTHIAN LEATHER. Then to a demented Spaghetti Western in outerspace. Jimi Hendrix is the hood ornament on a a giant retro space cruiser going to the Planet of CALEXICALIMEXIMAX.
11. The Snake - Go Read the topic about the spoilers on this song. And then thank god, this song is nothing like that one. The Saxophone gets to sound like a Giant Snake Charming Flute playing to the hypnotizing that the band is doing to the GIANT ROCK SNAKE.
12.Coastline - Here comes the harp again. Stan is Awesome. This is not a sad song to me. You show me a better band than this. That's what you show me. Awesome chorus.
13. Manitoba - The topic of this post says it all. This starts off Very Burt Bacharach Attack. Harp Again. Figure out the story and you will be as sad as this album.
There you go. You just got the "Pet Sounds" of Frank Black and the Catholics. Consider yourselves lucky.
THANK YOU FRANK - I WILL BE BUYING 5 COPIES TO GIVE AWAY.

I couldn't wait. I like getting my X-mas gifts early as well. I also like giving them early.
But trust me, I will be purchasing many of the real recordings. |

Im glad you feel that strongly about the record. Gives me hope that sometime soon, I may as well. But as for now, I can say this is my least favorite FB&C's album of them all. Actually, it's my least favorite FB solo record of them all. Something about it is just not clicking with me. Every FB solo album minus Teenager hit me like a ton of bricks right from the start. Teenager took a while and became a masterpiece and I'm hoping SMYT will do the same with time.......... |

I listened to it for a couple of days, and then one night last week I undertook the recommended drunken listen, and it all just clicked. Instant masterpiece. Just add liquor.
Lovely review, Mister Swimmer. |

I'm drunk as fucking piss nuts right now, but:
This album is great. Maybe it takes a drop of depression and a pinch of liqour to make this album click, but GOSH DERN. It's not quite as good as DitS, but it's a tid bit better than DW or BLD, that said: it's an awesome album. I intend to buy the album on its official release date (as I have done since the first FB&TC's album), but until then I will just rock the shit out on this promo. Nadine is quite as good as the Chuck Berry song of the same name, but it's almost there man. Almost there.

Hmmm, I don't know about people saying that the album is "no good" but speaking for myself only, the album simply hasn't sunk in yet. Right now it's my least favorite of the man's albums, but I NEVER pass final judgement on a FB album for many months. Teenager Of the Year taught me better than to do that I'm hoping I end up as obsessed with it as some of the other folks on the forum seem to be. |

SMYT is wonderful. I tried the whisky and red wine advice given so lovingly by Frank and Mereubu - but I would have loved the album under the influence of caro and peppermint tea. The JAina Blues has to be a single. Lyrically the whole album seems very strong - especially This Old Heartache - Leonard Cohen anyone? Coastline is so good that it would improve "Harvest" if it was added - I just wish it went on for a little bit longer. Poor Frank though - a sad, sad album. Thanks for the review Jason!

All I know is that if I was trying to restrain myself from downloading the album still (which I'm not, having given into temptation within 24 hours of it being available), I would hate you all. That said, I can't get enough of this album though I have yet to listen to it while somewhat 'relaxed' (/pissed). I listen to it at least once a day and on average probably about 4-5 times, and I absolutely love it from start to finish, and the scary thing is that it is somehow still growing on me despite that. It's hard to compare it with an album like BLD because of their relative lengths, but even so, I'd have to say that it's his best since DITS (not to say that DITS is better, but it's probably on par at the moment). Very sad... I suppose a cold heart of stone is better than no heart at all. |

Track order issue: when you dload via slsk for exemple, the album track list is the one that's been given in this topic : 1. Nadine 2. Everything is New 3. My Favorite Kiss 4. Jaina Blues5. - New House of the Pope 6. Beautiful Day/Horrible Day 7.Masif Centrale 8.When Will Happiness find Me 9. Goodbye Lorraine 10. This Old Heartache 11. The Snake 12.Coastline 13. Manitoba whereas the "official" track list (i got from this very site) is 1. Manitoba 2. This Old Heartache 3. Masif Centrale 4. Goodbye Lorraine 5. My Favorite Kiss 6. Beautiful Day/Horrible Day 7. New House of the Pope 8.The Snake 9. Nadine 10.Coastline 11. When Will Happiness find Me 12.Everything is New 13.Jaina Blues
This order works better for me after quite a few listens as i find that the strongest songs are either at the beginning or at the end of the album (the less convincing songs to me are horrible day , my fave kiss and happiness) and manitoba/heartache/massif central is a much better opening than Nadine/Everything/My fave kiss. Does that make any sense at all ? I'd say yes but then again it's just a bunch of songs.
PS : the song Massif Central has to be written just like that. No "masif centrale" or things like that. Someone tells frank, it is ridiculous (it's like you wrote Mhanit' obah) |

I just downloaded the album off of Kazaa. I will probably buy the album (I have not bought a cd in a year - I bought and adore DITS but I have not gotten around to listening to BLD or DW). The idea of thirteen sad songs very much appeals to me. Someone mentioned the "story behind" this album - I am curious what that is?
I have not really compared the two - but I can say that the final tracklisting is fantastic, if only because the album ends with Manitoba. He says "I have seen the face of God" as if he suffered through the entire album and the best song should be at the end. This album is about as good as DITS without being as poppy or radio friendly.

Listen all of you wonderful people,
I am not sure of the track order, it was numbered that way when I downloaded it, but all in all, it was just a track by track review, not a review of the packaging, order, work as a whole kinda review.
That being said, my review still stands.
AS FOR PUFFING THE MAGIC DRAGON, that track by track commentary was done under 100% of the influence. While I was, it was playing in that order and the point was to write while it was playing and finish before each song ended. I kinda ran out of steam towards the end if you know what I mean, but the album sure didn't.
Addendum: I look at this as a songwriter and a performer who greatly admires Frank's work and found in it a path to explore.
If I wrote a piece of work like "Show Me Your Tears", I would be so proud of it. It's beyond critique at that point because personally, I would feel a personal satisfaction, which is really in my opinion what all GOOD artists are after, not monetary gain or fame, just personally satisfied and not tortured by the sounds in your head that you can't get down right.
Well, this is down right. It's downright beautiful and Frank and the Catholics should be drinking champagne.

When does the album come out?
The funniest thing about frank black music is you really have to be lazy to enjoy it. let me explain, when I bought TOTY, i can't say i liked it at first. I put it in the CD player and the CD player was set on continuous play. I went out to relax on the deck and was too lazy to go change the cd. By the time I went back in, i loved the CD, although little melodies, and subtle notes and riffs really became embedded. Now, if I wasn't so lazy, i would have done what most americans would have done, gotten pissed off about the lack of instant gratification and filed the CD in the bottom of the stack. So when I buy his music, i actually schedule time to just relax and let it play for a while - like a long drive somewhere. At first, I didn't like BLD as much as Devils WS, but now I am addicted to it. I have to say though, Jane The Queen of Love does nothing for me, with the exception of the first 30 seconds - mainly because of the reference to Bees - but oh well, small price to pay. |

This record really speaks for itself, but i'll add my two pence worth, for another initial opinion, excuse me if this comes across as ridiculous! I'll stick my neck out and risk ridicule, because I'm interested in all our opinions, and would love to hear everyones about this record!
Here I go then.....
Nadine: Great way to start the record......creeps along, dancing all the way like a stylish hitman!....this bodes so well for the album....the catholics as we like to hear them......never letting you down!
Everything Is New: Wow, what can i say about this song?.. you just have to hear it!, god it's good.....Frank at his best.
My Favorite Kiss......swimmers spot on with this one!, proper road trip vibe!, different tact for Frank, but strangely deja vu, you'll see what I mean! really cool quick track, leaves you gagging for more!
Jaina Blues: Really upbeat amazing track, Frank distorting his vocals again (heheh, cool!), Piano and Organ parts are really really inspired! I thought this album was supposed to be quite down beat......No Way!
New House of the Pope: Listen to the bass in this one!, keeps it moving in a perfect southern drawl!....Excellent piano break, and a beautiful chord sequence. Doesn't stand out at first from the rest, but a classic in the making!
Horrible Day: Starts a bit ropey, then the organ and then the drums join in and suddenly everything makes sense. Really good piano break again!, it's a sing-song you know you will!
Masif Central: Instanty makes you realise you're witnessing the first playing of a will-be Frank classic.
(thought) The piano on this record is an absolutely perfect addition, it really solidifies the catholic's sound.
When Will Happiness Find Me Again: A little cheesey at first, and a twinge of the Pogues, great sound great song, and you cant help but love this song, yet another classic Frank chord sequence! As Swimmer says, its a happy sad song, all very Irish, (if that makes sense), with the usual Black Twist! Another short one leaving you wanting more and more!
Goodbye Lorraine: I've got to admit that this isn't one of my favourites on this record....but it may be yours. Until the guitar break, when I forgive everything, and start really liking it! (shallow, i know ;) )
This Old Heartache: This piano intro is classic, then the odd un-catholics drum track cuts in, and its all suddenly Frank-ed as it plays along.... damn cool track, one of those tracks that you hear something different everytime you listen. Strangely Paul Simon like actually, (please dont chastise me for that comment, it is a compliment really!, not that i'm pidgeon-holing)
The Snake: Bam! Straight at you... different, and you have to hear it to appreciate it!
Coastline: Harp Intro thats catching, solid bass line, and weaving melody line and slide guitar that makes this track just flow and flow....Listen out for the Banjo style sound that's ploddling around in the background! Woefully short song.....i want more.....more....MORE I TELL YOU......!!!!
Manitoba....Slap! Intro & Orchestration to end all Intros!, Rhythm riff and Vocal line floats along so wonderfully to the Chorus that's gagging for a sing-a-long, sneaky use of an accordian, (what next a 16th century lute?) can't help but feel this is a brilliant amalgamation of Irish folk, Country, and Frank.....the long lost Father has returned! Inspired drum fill at the end, combined with an excellent brass lick......Get yer Whiskey out, you'll need it and whatever yo do.....play this bloody record again straight away!
Might not be initial the best of Franks Albums but F*** this is a different move for him really, and i'm so glad he's still belting out this material!.....i've no doubt that he could make a bloody Charleston or Madrigal into a cool, new, and inovative song and style.
Hats Off, and let's hear it for Mr Black and Crew!

Yeah, Eric (I know that it was VDP on this record, but bear with me) needs to be a full-time Catholic. Not that I have anything against his latest side projects with Knife & Fork or anything like that, but Eric brings a lot to the table and all the recordings from FB solo on through DITS (and he does play on SMYT as well).
Great review, Mr. Parker Airspace, although I have to say that I would have made my least favourite song When Will Happiness Find Me Again as opposed to Goodbye Lorraine, despite the fact that Lorraine is clearly more country than I generally care to get, because Frank can pull it off without sounding pathetic/cheesy, and the Catholics know how to use a pedal steel like no one else. I love the eastern flair to This Old Heartache and you should have put a warning in your review for Jaina Blues: this song is insanely catchy/awesome. It's in my head constantly... guess I'm paying the Jaina dues. And the one-two punch of Coastline and Manitoba hits right where it counts.
To put it simply, it is impossible to explain the feeling of this album, at once an emotional high and a wallowing low, it is a masterpiece not to be underestimated.

My husband cracks up and starts giggling every time the falsetto kicks in. I'm hoping this will wear off. He says the falsetto combined with the image of Frank sitting in a garden playing a lute is just much too much for him. (And this is from a Franki Valli fan, mind you--he normally has a pretty strong falsetto tolerance.) |
