Cult of Ray was the pinnacle of Frank's solo career. He now has the influence of a steady bunch of guys behind him to help get him along. The Cult of Ray show was probably the best Frank Black show I have seen. It happened at the Opera House in Toronto and it absolutely rocked! The place was packed and Frank did not stop. I can't even remember him saying a word between songs, and I can't remember a song that he didn't play. Cult of Ray is for the eclectic and under nourished mind....we always need something different and strange.....If you wanted to get somewhere and it took a long time to get there....would you want to come back here?
I didn't think so!

"I find Frank's lyrics on this not very...let's just say it doesn't seem like Frank put alot of thought into them than his previous 2 works. I think the artwork kind of reflects it. For me there is a few classic songs but the rest is mostly forgettable tunes."
"Nevertheless i still think it's a good album."
i really don't understand your thought process. you say the album is mostly forgettable with bad lyrics, but overall it's a good album?

Well, man, I was wondering about this same topic.
For the life of me, I have NEVER been able to get into this album. NOw, I am not saying I hate it, I mean, it's got some good stuff, and maybe the poster who said they had waited so long after TOTY to have THIS come out might have hit the nail on the head. Comparatively it lacks. I even gave it the obligatory multiple listens and even gave it a few years between listens.
And also the person who mentioned the artwork had something going there. Perhaps the cheapness and the utter juvenile design aesthetics gave me a bad opinion of it before I even heard it. It always seemed like no thought went into it at all (however, as a songwriter, I KNOW that not to be true. Even shitty songs take a lot of thought and sometimes they are shitty because you thought too much).
I see this album as the Ugly, lanky, not comfortable in it's body teenager to FB&TC young adult. It seems like they were on the track to what they now are, but weren't quite there yet by half.
It's funny, though, that at the same time I write this, I am wanting to hear it again and am remembering most of the songs in a good way. Maybe that's because, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. Maybe knowing what the end product (FB&TC) is, I would be more open to what they had to do to get there.
I can tell you one thing though....I don't HARDLY listen to the pixies as much as I used to. FB&TC is way better. This sounds like the start of another topic.
This is where I belong.

MIRV drives a cab and stares at black/white checkers all day, or so I am guessing, based on how he apparently sees everything. Frank's worst is better than most's best. So you best watch out for the Plasma Blast, and, if necessary a Funky Bomb, followed closely by a big ol' Death's Head!

I like this record, the guitars kick ass.
Don't fret the troll nonsense here.
The net is filled with punch-drunk losers whining and moaning, just a reflection and projection of themselves.
Funny stuff.

i think an accurate description of people on the internet who are like yourself is "morons". people like yourself feel that sites like this are the artist's "holy ground", where no criticism or negative commentary on their beloved artist is allowed.
i say fuck that. frank black has a lot of sub-par material, so when i'm asked about it i'll say whatever the fuck i please.

Although I violate my own advice with this suggestion, the best approach with such as mirv is to ignore him. He suffers from a perversely low opinion of himself, and thereby generalizes inappropriately to a low opinion of the rest of us. And when we drop to anywhere near his level, he takes that as confirmation that we are as low as he is. When you wrestle with a pig, you get dirty and the pig likes it. - Mel |

I hope I haven't been putting across the wrong vibe with MIRV. I am actually trying to defend some of his words. He's not a troll. That's just lame name-calling type stuff. He's obviously familiar with Frank's material and has strong negative opinions. And it sadly appears that on this board we tend toward being little Frank bitches more than "fair" critics of his music.
I do happen to disagree with most of MIRV's opinions, but I won't belittle his honesty with the canned "you're just a dumb troll" response. It just doesn't fit.
My view on Frank is that within his catalog he's got a lot of variation from amazing to abyssmal, but his standard is just so much higher that, when compared to music at-large, it is still great. Like in BLD there are a few pretty dull moments, but it's mostly beautiful. But even its dull moments make for good music.
My rip on MIRV above was in response to his own idiotic declaration:
"i really don't understand your thought process. you say the album is mostly forgettable with bad lyrics, but overall it's a good album?"
Um, yes. That is possible. And you are misrepresenting what was said. He was comparing the CoR lyrics with past lyrics, and said it contains some classics. Then he said "NEVERTHELESS" it's a good album. So he qualified his comment, saying that despite its relative shortcomings, it is still a good album. Completely logical and a poor example to try and attack as "typical of the idiots" on this board.

i haven't verbally abused anybody. in fact, most of my "abuse" was in response to negative comments coming from others when i gave my opinion on some of frank black's musick.
anyways, if people can't handle a little argument/discussion on an anonymous internet bullboard, then something is wrong with this world. |

i don't know if the bonus cd counts, but i've always loved village of the sun and baby that's art. the album is ok, some great songs (cult of ray, men in black and kicked in the taco), the rest is below his usual standards (i think). |

and so it goes....

If you read all of this topic MIRV, you will find that there are quite a lot of negative opinions expressed (unlike some of the others!). Cult of Ray is in my view his worst work, and Dance War is as bad as he gets - others have similar views. I like the fact that others on the forum rate COR so highly: quot homines, tot sententiae |

Ask the man himself. Someone yelled out "Dance War" during a break at the Tuesday night show in T.O. Frank's reply to this was 'Huh, I don't know what I was smokin' when I wrote that song!'....but hey, one man's garbage is another man's favourite song off of an album. By the way people....sticks and stones and misconceptions!

It was the Tuesday night. Scott (a.k.a. Harris) started to play the drums for the song. Actually during the past couple of tours, I have been surprised that they play 'Kicked in the Taco' with such consistency. It wouldn't be my first (and sometimes only) pick from the album.

I would LOVE to hear DANCE WAR in concert. I admit that lyrically it is not Frank's best, but it rocks hard, and it kinde' reminds me of goofy Leonard Cohen, you know 'Jazz Police' type of stuff |

re: the double CD version of CoR.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=921103979
i knew i had seen this in person before, i thought about buying it, but i never did. i imagine it's pretty rare, that's the only one on eBay.
actually, CoR is the only FB CD i don't have. i've put it off because -- well basically i've always read things like this thread in regards to it. i will get it at some point, but only when i can't think of enough other CDs to fill my budget. |

I'll do my list You Ain't Me, The Marsist always Kicked in the Taco. Every song really. You have to listen to it as if you never heard it before try it again. I have some singles from that time and some of the songs were really good like "you never heard about me" , "Pray a little faster", Better Things" and the "Village of the Sun". I know right know all I can lisen to is Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop so I'm sure everyone else is stuck on them but, open you mind and you maybe able to see this vision I mean his Men in black was out way before Will Smith's.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen it for less than $8, as is also the case for TOTY and FB epon. Always makes me cringe when I see classics at a discount while fresh garbage sells for $17.99. Guess it's not that unusual, but knowing that fails to console, somehow - Mel |

He did in an old interview. He talked about some of the tapes he was listening to when travelling across the US. I remember he spoke of the Stranglers because I loved them when I was at school - saw them c6 times. The Stranglers' Meninblack album was crap though! |

I was watching Ace Ventura 2 the other night and the song 'Secret Agent Man' has the exact same opening guitar riff as You Aint Me. Im sure its just a big coincidence but it is quite possibly the most similar riff I've ever heard, without it being the same song. If anyone has it give it a listen. |
