I know that Kim Deal was part of the pixies and that's why i bought every album of the Breeders(Amps included)but i really don't like them that much.I find Last Splash kind of entertaining but that's about it.Is it me or there are others that keep listening to their bubble gum pop just because they like the person more than the music? Please do not hate me for this it's just i keep thinking that in a group somebody does the job and the others follow. When they go solo you can't help noticing the difference.Same thing wih the smashing pumpkins.James Iha's albums simply suck...

I like them bubble gum pop or not. its not that I'm not just buying the albums just cos kim was in the pixies- it just happens that that was the way I got introduced to another band that I like! |

i love the breeders. i think all of their albums, including the amps are excellent. kim does seems like a really cool person but thats not why i like the breeders. i don't agree that in the pixies kim just followed. although fb did write most of the songs i think kim's vocals really add to those songs, especially on trompe where they create a creepy, earie atomosphere. i don't think kim was content just to be a bass player with no creative input, which is why she made pod while still in the pixies. the breeders toured that album as nirvana's support. i really don't think you can dismiss kim deal or the breeders as a side project that sucks or compare her to james iha. the breeders have experienced alot of success and when they played in london last year the tickets sold out so fast that they moved the gig to a bigger venue and added another date. if you don't like the breeders or kim deal thats fair enough- its just a question of taste, but i don't think you can dismiss her as talentless or say that her solo projects are riding on the back of the pixies-her solo stuff is completely different from the pixies. i think some people get it into their heads that they have to like either kim or frank which is just stupid. |

I think Pod is a really good rock album. The Safari single is good. I disliked Last Splash very much. After that, I got a "Tipp City" single (simple but cool), and nothing more.
I remember Kim got interviewed on Boston radio while she toured in support of Trompe Le Monde. She was very chatty until an exchange that went a little something like this:
DJ: I looove "Gigantic." Everyone I know loooves "Gigantic." Would you like to write more Pixies songs?
Kim: I don't think that's going to happen.
(Awkward silence)
DJ: Ah, oh, so you don't want to write more?
Kim (VERY coldly): No, I just think it's Charles's band and he writes the songs, and there's just no point in talking about it.
DJ: Oh, um, so, the tour, how do you think that's going... |

i think they are overrated. i really didnt like Pod. I think Last Splash is good at some spots. I didnt bother getting Title TK cause i thought Huffer was lame. By the way, gigantic is one of my least favorite pixies songs. I like kims voice too, i dunno, she just doesnt do awhole lot for me.

I love the Breeders. Pod is fantastic, Last Splash is one of my favourite records, period, and Title TK, while not as brilliant as Last Splash, is very good. I also like Pacer a lot and come back to it often. Kim is just a master of the hummable, bubble-gum melody. With Title TK however, she shows off her ability to pen a melody that conveys a darker mood. Check out "The She", "Off You" or "Put on a Side". All prime examples of Kim melodies that aren't gummy in the least. I do miss Joshephine though, she was awesome. Check out Kelley Deal's site for a cool little Where's Waldo style "Where's Jo" game. Apparently, they really don't know what happened to her. www.kelleydeal.net |

I like the Breeders. I got Last Splash first and I liked it. Then I got Pod and it is my favorite one, especially the way they use the violin in a couple of the songs. |

Well you are right about two things.Kim's presence really worked in the Pixies and the Breeders experienced a lot of success.Fact is that the most succesful commercially pixies single is Gigantic.I sure didn't want to choose my favourite between F.B & K.D but the Breeders are terribly overrated though they have some cool songs. That's about it,i don't care about Kim's past it's her present that i dislike...

Kim Deal makes good music. The Breeders are one of my favourites. If you don't like them, well I geuss you don't like them. Anything that Kim Does is worth a listening to, and inevitably in my case a purchase as well. |

well, i think i made it clear that i like the breeders before. did i? i can see why some people dont like them(kind of) and i have to agree that Gigantic wouldn't be my favourite pixies song. but i get pretty pissed off when people WON'T listen to them just cos kim's in the band and the don't like her cos she got 'artistically fustrated' in the pixies and blame her for ruining it. ok, she got pissed or stoned before gigs but if that was the only problem with the pixies they could have got a new bassist and fired her. and if you're gonna say 'that wouldn't be the same' then you can't complain about her!! ok, rant over. hee hee about the james iha thing. isnt he working with evan dando, ryan adams and whatshername (the bassist in hole and s.p. for a while) on an album?

I heard the Breeders before the Pixies, and wasn't that impressed with Last Splash. When I got into the Pixies a good few years ago I bought all of the Breeders albums.... in my opinion they have done some good tunes, but as far their albums go, they are not too good. I think the Amps album is stronger than any Breeders album, and cannot understand why Kim has added an Amps song to the latest Breeders album.
If you put all of their good songs together you could make a semi decent album....

I really can't just sit and listen to girl singers for too long, and that is why I've never bought any breeders CDs. I've actually never even heard a Breeders song, although I did just download a whole Amps concert, but haven't had time to listen to it yet |

I just picked up The Last Hard Men, which was an album done by Sebastian Bach (ex Skid Row frontman) and Kelley Deal. Ive only listened to a few of the songs, but Kelleys style and voice is pretty much identical to Kims.... Not such a great album though!

I don't even rate the breeders. They are non important, that's all. Any attention they ever achieved was because Kim was in the Pixies, which WAS Black Francis : His songs. She wrote songs in his style to fit in with the band. That's all.
How many copies of Last Splash can you find at used cd stores?
A shitload, I'll tell you.

What song is Special One, havn't heard of that one before. I'm sort of tired of hearing these sort of debates on this forum about Kim Deal. I loved her voice in The Pixies and and she knows how to rock, end of story. I love all Breeders stuff and I fucking love Off You and The She, and her version of Freed Pig is brillant.

its one with ultra vivid scene. the problem is, my favourite breeders songs are the ep ones, which no one can just hear, like safari, head to toe, don't call home, shocker in gloomtown(and gbv are in the video!it being their song and all) and also b-sides and covers and stuff. is freed pig a cover? shit, my favourite breeders song is a COVER?

Never heard that one with The Ultra Vivid Scene, cool. B girl, where did you see the Shocker in Gloomtown video? I had it on video when MTV, back in the good old days, had a Pixies/Breders special, but my sis and bro recorded over it, arghhhhh!!!!!!(had Divine Hammer, Dig for Fire and loads more). Sebadoh do Freed Pig origanly, great song and The Breeeders do a great cover.

I'd have to agree with you there Swimmer, they have produced some good songs but I am not too sure whether Kim would have had half the fanbase had she not been in the Pixies. Like I said before, they have done some good stuff but their albums are very very patchy.
Saying that, everyone has their own taste.

i really think thats crap. why would people buy breeders records just because she was in the pixies. the breeders don't sound like the pixies at all. someone may check out a breeders album because of the pixies connection but if they thought it was shit they would take it back and wouldn't buy anymore. you are also forgetting that the same could be said for fb, that most of his fan base is made up of pixies fans and he plays pixies songs live. i'm not saying that he shouldn't, after all he did write them but the fact is that he benefits from the pixies connection more than kim. I'm sure they would both like to get on with their respective careers without the specture of pixies hanging over them, but that just won't happen because the media and most music fans like the pixies more than fb or the breeders. i personally like all three equally but this kim hating and suggesting that kim owes her music career to frank seems to be based more in sexism than taste. the thought that kim as a women could be talented and have a career without the help of a man seems to really upset some of you. |

I'm a Breeders fan,I have always liked Kims stuff. I don't really get the I hate Kim stuff that goes on either. I am sure that as solo artists both Kim Deal And Frank Black are tired of their Pixies connections. Disliking Kim as a result of a sexist attitude? That may be a bit of a reach. |

I mostly agree with Gracie. Besides, could the Pixies connection really account for the large success of Last Splash? Such a notion would suggest that about half (maybe more) of Pixies fans don't buy Pixies albums. |

i saw the breeders in dublin last year - great gig. interesting observation though - everyone i was talking to that night was either wearing a pixies T shirt (one guy was wearing a dog in the sand t shirt which was maybe not the brightest thing to do) or admitted that they wouldnt be there is it wasnt for the pixies. i also remember one guy screaming at kim 'play gigantic - its your song!' if looks could kill. not liking kims post pixies stuff is childish IMHO, but hey everyones entitles to their opinion. thats what this forum is all about. cheers you guys.
