A lot of the favorite bad movie's listed are comedies, as these are often hilarious but bad. How about movies that are both good and funny?

I absolutely love Fargo. An all time fave.

Clerks is brilliant. Very well written.

Dogma. funny, pokes fun at Catholicism, just great. (ya, so I like Kevin Smith a lot).

There's Something About Mary. Should probably fall in the bad movie category but it just doesn't. It's purely a really good comedy.

Clue. A favorite since I was a kid. I've seen this movie a million times and it still makes me laugh, and I notice something new every time I watch it.

Meet the Parents. Similar to Mary, it's too good to be bad. I love Owen Wilson. The man is funny.

Rushmore. Absolute masterpiece. Cracks me up. The king of the supporting role as in Kingping, Royal Tennenbaums, etc...

That's all I can think of for the momment. I want out of my office!

If Blues Brothers is a good comedy, I nominate it. Fun music, too.

I just don't like The Blues Brothers. Never did it for me. Maybe I'm all turned around on the subject, but it just didn't seem particularly funny.

I got to meet Kevin Smith this weekend at Wizard World east in Philadelphia, got a picture and he signed my extras tag from jersey girl (Yeah I was extra in Philly!). He did a 3 hour Q&A session answering questions and of course some douche bag had to ask "What's a nubian?" to which eveyrone booed. The best part was after the Q&A he showed us two scenes from Jersey Girl which were really funny.

I completely forgot he's got a new movie coming. And you're in it no less. I don't know whether to be happy for you or just vomit in envy. Well, I don't see why I can't do both. That's awesome man, I'll look for you in it! (I have no idea what you look like, so I'm not really going to do that. But seriously, that's cool)

No, the one I'm thinking of is Albert Brooks with Debbie Reynolds as his mother.

Well, I hate to go against my no-post-on-a-topic-started-by-Speedy_M-policy, but I can't believe you omitted this one:

Austin Powers - Intelligent, probably not, but it's good times. I figure if Something About Mary/Meet the Parents are allowed, I'm safe.

Of course, you've listed most of my favourite intelligent comedies. I know that I will be booed by the hardcore Kevin Smith fans, but in my mind, there's nothing wrong with Mall Rats either.
Maybe not the most intelligent of his movies, but I think it's the funniest.

And although it might be stretching the definition of comedy a bit, I found Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels to be quite to my amusement as well.

I'll have to get back to you on the rest...

But Oh Brother Where Art Thou is now my very favourite comedy.

I don't know, I fell asleep during Dogma, I think they just got too far away from Clerks, you know?

What does it have do with Clerks? Sure, it exists in the same Kevin Smith "universe", but that doesn't tie it to anything other than it mentions some familiar names and places. Clerks is what it is, and it's different from Mallrats, which is different from Chasing Amy. The bonds they share are the aforementioned universe and wonderful prose-like dialogue with controversial and hilarious results. Dogma should be far away from Clerks. Miles away. The further the better. I loved Clerks, but I don't need another one. He already made it. I would be pretty dissapointed if Frank made seven or eight more Orange albums. (Although one more would be okay. I'd like to here some multi-tracked Frank n' Eric goodness again!)

Royal Tennenbaums is quite brilliant. Don't excpect to be rolling on the floor, parts of it are depressing and dark. But it very well written, direceted and acted. The visuals are very well done, from the set designs, to the costumes, everything is very well executed. A lot of detail is in there. Someone gave this film a lot of tender love and care.

For "good" comedies, I'm a big fan of those old George Cukor/Howard HAwks farces from the 40s and 50s, that razor sharp dialouge between Katharane Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Rosalind Russell, et al, in "His Girl Friday" or "The Philadelphia Story" etc. Bam bam bam, you have to LISTEN to catch it all...

I too loved the Blues Brothers. For several reasons. Somehow John Landis (also directed "Coal Miners Daughter") manages to capture the feel of whatever he's filming with teeny little details that you don't notice, but would miss if they're not there. As someone who grew up in the Chicago area, I can tell you, Landis nailed it. He got everything right, the lighting, the accents, the attitudes of everybody involved. And Illinois in general. It was perfect. There was nothing about that movie that wasn't true to Chicago, Illinois. And that's a crucial element to great satire/parody. Right from the get-go, when it opens with Ackroyd picking up Belushi at Joliet in a cop car, and Belushi bitches about the irony of that, and Ackroyd counters with the functionality of having "cop tires, cop pickup, cop suspension" -- that tension between the symbolic and the practical is sooooo Catholic, sooooo Illinois, and actually, soooooo artist! Maybe I love this movie so much because I'm all three and laughed at myself all the way through.

Plus, I know there's a lot of musicians among us. Who among us hasn't been misbooked and could totally relate to the scene where the Bros end up improvising at the redneck bar. (Which was filmed at Dettmerings, a notorious bar where yunungs could get served not three miles from where I grew up, in an obscure little suburb called MAtteson, IL -- I grew up in, don't let the name fool you, Country Club Hills). Who among us couldn't feel that disappointment at seeing your friends the talented musicians relegated to playing horrid lounge music, or flipping whole chickens and dry white toast, (our equavalent of Wedding Bands), or knowing they people who deserved to be legends were instead waiters or short order cooks? Absolutely accurate, absolutely perfect.

Plus, name dropping time!!! I was a radio news intern in Chicago when I got to go to the press conference that opened the movie, a joint press conference with Belushi, Ackroyd, and then Mayor Jane Byrne. Byrne was thanking them for choosein Chicago to do their on-location work, "It's a scenic city, it's a beautiful city..." Byrne began and Ackroyd interupted "And who could resist the heathen magnificence of Lower Wacker Drive!!!" It flattned Byrne, just shut her right up!! Later that day I was taking a break at Chicagofest when I took a seat by teh Blues State to watch Koko Taylor's set, and I recognized these voices in the bleachers behind me -- Ackroyd and Belushi!!! I turned around and mustve had a googly-eyed fan look on my face, and Belushi offered me some of his popcorn. My brush with greatness!

Mallrats is Kevin Smith's funniest film, hence his best.

High Fidelity is very good, but not as good as the book.

Princess Bride is a must see as well. Early Rob Reiner films are excellent.

Let's not forget:
Groundhog Day
South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut

Wes Anderson does rule. Love all his stuff. Being John Malkovich was great, I really need to see Adaptation. I loved A Fish Called Wanda, bloody funny.

Has anyone ever seen a film called "Last of the Red Hot Lovers"? It's an old Alan Arkin film from the 70's. It's very funny, really good writing. "Staid is a very staid word". I love that line.

The Three Amigos! Yes, I love that movie. He shoots the invisible guy. That's brilliance. They are so famous, they are "infamous". By the way, I'm now a "Dog in the Sand", which for me is a 1000-post like acheivment. Except, you know, it was 100 posts.
