What images do you find emotionally moving, or what pictures / photos do you feel passionate about.

For me the picture of the guy standing in front of the tanks at Tiannanmen Square in 1989 sends a chill through me, his bravery and defiance, one man standing infront of a long line of tanks and not giving a fuck about the consequences. Crazy photo!

That image of your arse protruding from the waters of a Chinese reservoir is a good one for me, no on a more serious note my favourite picture has to be the one of Nixon and Elvis at the white house, Elvis was apprently totally out of his skull at the time and had stayed in hotel hear the 'house and sent a message to the pres that he wanted to help get America's youth off drugs (presumably his private pharmacist also supported this policy!?!?) Anyway here's a link to said picture;
http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/elvis/elnix.html

Honestly read this, you couldn't make this stuff up!

For a Family Studies course we watched a film where they actually showed a young girl getting circumcised. I can never erase the look on her face and her screams from my mind, I wish I could.

On a lighter note, I find pretty much all GWAR movies too disturbing and this cyclops thing leaves a really bad mental image as well.

excellent topic, Stu.

Sometimes I get chills just looking at images taken by Hubble Space Telescope and the like, being a huge astronomy buff. I guess what affects me is that astral/space photography makes us see our planet, our species, and our human situation in a such a completely different perspective. An image that stands out is the Hubble deep-field shot of galaxies that are incomprehensibly far away, yet captured in the form of a photograph. I guess that a lot of the impact this has on me has to do with the concepts/ideas behind the pictures as much as the pictures themselves.

Psychic, have you seen the BBC's six part program on space, it's narrated by Sam Neil and is a cracking series (of course, anything by the BBC is pretty damn quality). If you haven't, and you'd be interested then I could maybe pick a copy up for you (if I can find it again, which is very likely) and maybe get it sent to you from England when I go back in a months time. It only costs a dollar for two DVD's here so it's hardly breaking the bank.

Of course, if you had any Frank live recordings..........

Excuse my ignorance but what does GWAR mean (Graphic War movies maybe??).... Plus the cyclops is not moving but disturbing.... very disturbing.

On a more serious note, I think Sept 11th produced some of the most moving images that I have ever seen. People waving shirts etc etc out of the windows of the Trade Centre trying to get help, people falling after they had the courage to jump (the two people holding hands whilst falling), the walls of photos and pictures put up by people trying to find their missing loved ones, and the answerphone messages left by people to their loved ones when they knew that they were going to die. All this is heartbreaking stuff if you ask me and at times it was hard to fight back the tears, it's still quite moving even thinking about it now and I hope that I never see anything like that ever again.

Another moving image was back in the first gulf war when the Iraqi's were surrendering to the US troops. Alot of them were on their knees and pleading for mercy and crying their eyes out.... crazy stuff.

My stepbro (17 years old) has just come back from Iraq and he told my family that he saw some pretty bad stuff, a few dead soldiers etc etc, but he said that the worst thing was seeing the poverty, and the desperation of the Iraqi children.

No, I haven't ever seen that program but it sounds like something that would be of great interest to me indeed! Let me know when you are back in England, and we can work something out...I'd like to get my hands on it.
I have one Frank Black live show on mp3 that I could burn for you, if you're interested. I think its Feb. 13th of 2001, but I'd have to double-check that. E-mail me...

(oh yeah, Derek, if you read this your $3 are on the way, sorry for the delay. and SSMVGD *RULES*, i've been listening to it for two or three days non-stop!)

My husband tells me of a movie that was playing at some party he went to back in the day. Now he's not the squeamish type but he said this movie had ruined him forevermore and he's now scarred for life and would pay big bucks to erase those images from his head. I've never watched it and don't want to cuz I hear its so gross (I'm guessing its like our eupemisms thread.) Anyways its called GG Allen or something like that. Just for all you real freaks.

GG Allin had some serious issues, no doubt. Whatever compelled others to actually participate in his psychotic behaviour, I don't know.

This was the most amazing, horrible, moving photo I have ever seen I think. If I think of it now, I still get a lump in my throat.

Black September I believe is a Palestinian terrorist group. In the 1972 Munich Olympics some members of Black September managed to get into the Israeli Olympic teams hotel and hold the team hostage. I think that 1 member of the Israeli team managed to escape, the rest were killed. It's a very sad story, and One Day in September is a very powerful documentry which tells the story of the whole affair, with interviews with the one surviving member of Black September who carried out the hostage taking.

Basically, the documentry highlights that the German authorities fucked the situation up (which didn't look good seeing as it was a Jewish team), some of which was not their fault but some of their actions were shocking.

The documentry is narrated by Michael Douglas and is well worth seeing if you get the chance.

You know, I was blessed with a daughter on October 25 of last year, and although it was moving once she actually arrived, the whole process of birth WAS SIMPLY DISGUSTING! (If any of the female members of this forum have kids they'll probably be amused by this.) I know that everybody always says, "Oh, the miracle of a new life coming into the world," and the like. And don't get me wrong, I appreciated the magnitude of what was happening. But lawdamighty, I don't want to be in that situation again for a long, long time. My wife and I both want to have at least one or two more children. But it's like, I'm going to require at least five years or so before I'm ready for that again. She and I both feel differently about the matter, simply for the sole sake of one of us having a uterus. I freely admit that, as a male, I will never know what it's like to bear a child, and that my perspective will be more limited than hers. But that is fine with me. That event was one of the most striking, though not in an all together good way, things I've ever seen.

Ive always wandered what it would be like to see your kid being born, and although like you say the miracle of birth is fascinating, the gory side would probably disgust me also. I can see myself as one of those guys who wakes up after fainting as I really don't like the sight of any blood, or anything else for that matter.

Blood is the least of your worries in childbirthing..heh

Anyone wonder what *your* birth was like? Or anyone wonder how traumatized kids will be when they see it in this wonderful age of technology?

Hey, is 'Faces of Death' legal is the US?? My friend (Bandan) has some clips from that video, which has a very negative impact on the state of my mind one evening, i.e. the CEO who shoots himself in front of all of his colleagues in a board meeting. You get to see the clip in Bowling for Columbine, but not in its entirety. The rest of the footage is very horrific and somewhat depressing (well, it left me feeling a little disturbed for the remainder of the evening).

I saw one of those clips from KaZaa, and while it was not the authentic "Faces of Death" series, it was still funny as hell anyway. This old man is outside blowing up a small swimming pool. He's got it about 80% done, and then this kid comes running out of his house and down the stairs. He then proceeds to jump on the swimming pool while the old man is still blowing it up, and blows the old man's head clean off. Funny shit. But it couldn'tve been real; it was too stupid. There was another one I saw where some oriental guy got the tip of his penis chopped off. I don't know if that one was real or not; the image quality was pretty poor. Don't ask me why I downloaded that; it was a morbid curiosity. But I have actually seen the Faces of Death series at a local Movie Station. (They're like, the Black Sheep of the video stores; it's there you must go if you want to rent porn movies.)

Man, I'm as squeemish as it comes...I don't know how anyone in their RIGHT FUCKING MIND can watch that shit with a straight face. One day our health class was cancelled cause the gym was occupied, so we had to sit in with the death and dying class...happened to be the day where this person from the Wayne County Morge (sp?) (yes...Detroit, just imagine) came in with a slideshow. Shit man, some of that stuff was pretty fucked up. I couldn't look at some of it, and my boiling point was a clip of someone's intestines on a sort of skewer type thing, and the person had the balls to make jokes about it (shish-ka-bob). Needless to say I started thinking about my lunch, and I started getting cold sweats and had to leave the room for the fear of passing out or puking. I'm so squeemish that a friend of mine DESCRIBED the scenes in Faces of Death and my stomach started turning. Shit like that is fucked up man...seriously fucked up. I can't handle it.

Hey Barto,
The stuff I saw was obviously fake. I wouldn't have thought it was that funny if I'd watched people's intestines hanging on shit and stuff like that. I did see this Discovery Channel show on reconstructive facial surgery, and it was HORRIBLE, about 1000x moreso than my daughter's birth. This one girl had a disease where her face was really flat, and they went in there to pull out the nasal region of her skull. They had to like, make an inscision on her skull, and PULL HER FACE DOWN!!!!! Like, over her nose. Then they put an instrument of some kind in her skull, and very forcefully pulled out the nasal region. I was sickened, but for some reason I had to watch it. It wasn't funny or anything, but it's like so horrible you're captivated. Sorry if I've like, made you sick describing it or anything. I couldn't believe they'd show that on TV. It's alot worse than any blood or gore in a Freddy or Jason movie.
