Instead of listing every band I can think of, I'm wondering what fb-ish folks are fond of nowadays, i.e. what's going on with the new crop of rock bands. Circumstantially, I have not heard the White Stripes, And You Will Know Us..., the Vines, and some others. Does anyone have particular faves from the new? Or aversions, and why? For instance, I don't care for the Strokes, because I just happen not to. A lot of critics are pre-branding many new acts as part of the 'new hype' of 'yet another wave of rock music' (I'm paraphrasing, not quoting). Po' old me's just trying to make some sense of it. Shows how ignorant I am, yeah, but... I haven't had the time or $ to be otherwise. I'm still catching up on Leonard Cohen...

I'm extremely glad that this is happening with rock music. It reminds me of the late 70's punk scene in NYC, but due to better exchange of information and technology these days, not just people from New York have heard of these great bands. The White Stripes are fantastic, as are the Von Bondies, the Kills, the Mooney Suzuki, among others. The Vines and the Strokes seem quite overrated, however.

I agree....the strokes and the vines were dubbed the best thing yet before they even put out an album! Personally, i think they suck.
i think the new york scene is also overrated, but i have been listening to these NY bands lately:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs www.yeahyeahyeahs.com Bona Roba www.bonaroba.net Mooney Suzuki www.themooneysuzuki.com
they have some nice intensity. |

i'm sure we could all list a zillion bands..
i have to say, my favorite release of last year is probably still Beulah's "The Coast Is Never Clear".. (aside from Frank of course)..
it's such a perfect pop record.
other "new" bands i dig:
The Glands Ted Leo/Pharmacists Grandaddy Clinic
Strokes shmokes.. i liked the record when it came out, but i'm kind of over it now. i saw them at Coachella last year and they were great live and all, but there's something about their songs that like JUST reaches the point of rocking, but doesn't quite get there. i think they're catchy and they have a cool sound etc.. but calling them (and The Hives) a new sound is just typical record industry marketing bullshit.
everything is re-packaged and re-named every 5 years or so.. the kids don't know any better..
maybe when they get older they'll hear Velvet Underground and The Stooges and realize that there was rock music before the late nineties..

Other than FB, lately I've been listening to the following records:
Brothers of Conquest - All The Colors of Darkness
Ryan Adams - Demolition
Wire - Pink Flag & Chairs Missing
Sinners & Saints - The Sky Is Falling
Flying Burrito Bros. - Gilded Palace of Sin & Hot Burrito
Nuggets I & II boxsets
Jim Croce - Anniversary collection
The Complete Hank Williams Sr. 10 disc boxset
....I know, not all of it is new....but I don't really care for too much new music. The Strokes? Pfttt....lame and boring IMO. |

Frank Black & The Catholics is the only "rock" band I'm listening to (oh, and the jSbX and the Breeders too). I'm more into electronic stuff. Last records bought: Jeff Mills, Alpha, Recloose, Cut Chemist, Swayzak, Transglobal Underground, Iven Schmidt, Los Hermanos, Nortec. Well I do like some indie bands, like Supergrass or the Flaming Lips, but I don't buy the records.

Sloan is a wicked band. My first show actually.. Eric's Trip were the openers, who are also worth a listen. If you like Sloan, also see the Mummyheads (now defunct, but still good) or the Beatles (also defunct). By Divine Right is another amazing Canadian poprock band.

Wow, Sloan played at my first rock concert, too. It was the 89X Birthday Bash (local radio station, lots of bands). I really dug em. |

some bands to pay attention to, or listen to because they have disbanded:
-queens of the stone age (anything is highly recommended) -desert sessions -burning brides -anything patton (fantomas, mr. bungle, tomahawk, dillinger escape plan, faith no more) -jon spencer blues explosion -primus -big wreck -at the drive in -toadies -M.I.R.V.
this is what i'm listening to at the moment, and i feel that these are some fine bands that need to be heard.

I realy love Primus, wich is not one of these Nu-metal bands. too bad they splitted. My favorite album are Frizzle fry and Pork Soda. They worked many times with Tom Waits (Tommy the cat, and on their last album).

Long live Primus
this one is for Les, Ler and Brain
THOSE DAMNED BLUE-COLLAR TWEEKERS
I've seen them out at Soco They're pounding sixteen penny nails The truckers on the interstate Have been known to ride the rails The sweat is beating on the brow Can't keep these fellas down 'Cause those damned blue-collared tweekers Are runnin' this here town I knew a man who hung drywall He hung it mighty quick A trip or two to the blue room Would help him do the trick His foreman would pat him on the back Whenever he would come around 'Cause these dammed blue-collar tweekers Are beloved in this here town Now the union boys are there To protect us from all the corporate type While curious George's drug patrol Is out here hunting snipe Now they try to tell me different But you know I ain't no clown 'Cause those damned blue-collar tweekers Are the backbone of this town Now the flame that burns twice as bright Burns only half as long My eyes are growing weary As I finalize this song So sit back and have a cup o' joe And watch the wheels go round 'Cause those damned blue-collar tweekers Have always run this town

Sorry to be nit-picky, but was it "Mummyheads" or "Mommyheads"?
The Mommyheads were fantastic. |

I have to agree with MIRV on the mike patton thing.
Mr Bungle is amazing. Dillinger Escape Plan are good too, but infinately better live.

Anyone who likes FB needs to check these out:
Imperial Teen - seasick and On Superdrag - In the Valley of Dying Stars Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf Burning Airlines - Mission Control and Identikit Zoobombs - Welcome Back, Zoobombs The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (not rock, but great songwriting)
I like The Strokes and White Stripes alright, but that Vines album isn't very good. Every song is another ripped off band (Clash, Jane's, Poster Children, Nirvana . . .) I don't know what the big deal about The Hives is either. They seem to be ripping off The Rolling Stones rather viciously. Queens of the Stone Age are going to be the next big thing. "Songs for the Deaf" is the new "Siamese Dream"!
