I am sitting here listening to this song.
This is one of the catchiest and classic FB songs. It reminds me of course of all the wonderful "places and times" songs, like "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Village Green", "Waterloo SUnset", "Penny Lane"....it definitely falls in that family.
Anyone have any insight into this song? What's the story?

It is a Doug Sahm song not Frank's. The bottle rockets covered it also. Sahm was an intelligent and cool cat if you check in to him. Kind of the psychodelic Tex Mexer. It's often said that Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day was the song Gerry Goffin and Carole King were trying to write when they wrote Pleasant Valley Sunday, so your comparision is rightfully made. I love the song as well, both Frank's Accoustic version from a French(I believe) radio show, and the SSMVGD session.

Ha! Color me red. I didn't know it twas a cover.
Thanks for that info, as it really clears up why this wasn't on any legit albums by Frank in the full band form. I thought, why leave off a song that good?

Yeah, I love Frank's cover of this. He does it just right. I have the original Sahm version as well (also great), and Frank's version is, of course, uniquely his own.
My daughter loves the Catholics version. She sings it to herself when she think no one is listening, but changes the "king" to "queen." Kids. |

It's my favorite song by far from SSMVGD sessions. Brilliant cover.

I love the song, but I have to admit there's something about the acoustic version that I like more. It's such a beautiful song, and a lot of fun to sing along and play. |

I like the acoustic version better, even though the MP3 I have of it is lo-fi. SSMVGD version is alright, but, eh, it doesn't do as much for me as just Frank and his guitar.

The Catholics' version just seems tedious compared to the acoustic version. |

I much prefer the SSMVGD version... especially the ending. Granted, it goes long, but I don't get bored on it. |
