Well, I've had Soft Bulletin downloaded for awhile and I've enjoyed it up until this morning about 30 mins. ago. I now LOVE it and must purchase it. This record is brilliant and tasty in a plethora of ways. The question is, which one next... |

I'm sorry but the gong thing just swung it for me...I didn't know it was possible to get gong-envy prior to that gig (supporting mercury rev at the time). |

I've never heard a single song by them. I was about to get one of their CDs used yesterday, but my brother said I wouldn't like them so I got Camper Van Beethovan instead. |

Hey, I like both Camper Van Beethoven and the Flaming Lips, so, y'know, it is possible that you may like them both. Having said that, the only artist / band I like more than Camper is Frank.

Which Camper album would you suggest as an intro to the group? |

I would totally suggest getting Zaireeka and experimenting with it. Car stereos, boom boxes.. whatever. It's cool. My friend managed to mix it down to 1 disc and it sounds great.

Hmmm, I like their major label albums -slightly- more than their releases on Pitch-a-Tent / I.R.S., so normally I'd say to go with Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart, HOWEVER, they've recently released a box set called "Cigarettes and Carrot Juice," which contains their first three albums, a disc of rarities, and a live disc that contains songs from their last two albums for only $30 - so buy that, and if you dig it, buy their next two albums in order - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and Key Lime Pie.
As much as I like the oddities albums - "Camper Van Beethoven is Dead, Long Live Camper Van Beethoven" and the cover of the Fleetwood Mac album, "Tusk" - I have to say that these are basically for die hard Camper fans.

Thanks for the info. I was at a record shop yesterday and saw the box set but I wasn't sure what they sounded like.

I bought Zaireeka on Thursday for $30 at THE coolest record shop in Eugene. It'l be a while before I can actually listen to the thing, but I fully plan on manufacturing a high-quality, single-disc version as soon as my friend with the crazy multitracking PC has some time on his hands. The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots are 9/10 albums, by the way. |

uhhh! Where did you lay your hands on it B Girl, have you managed to listen to it synchronized yet? They had a cool box set in Tower but I think I'm going to get Yoshimi (have Soft Bulletin) before I start on their Avant Hard stuff.

I quickly browsed thru this topic and wasn't sure if I saw anyone mention the album "Transmissions from the Satelite Heart." Is it any good? I'm thinking of buying it (I only have Yoshimi at the moment).

Since you useless bastards didn't give me any advice, I went ahead and bought Soft Bulletin yesterday. I was gonna buy "Transmissions from the SH" used off half.com, but I just went ahead and bought Soft Bulletin new, because it seems you people like it. I still might get the other eventually.

I saw the Lips in a club in '88. They had lasers, a fog machine, and strobe lights. A great show. The weirdness was enhanced by all the LSD I'd ingested. "Hear It Is" would be the disc I'd recommend. Their new stuff is good, but I haven't bought anything of theirs since "Transmissions......." |

'hear it is' is also on 'finally the punk rockers are taking acid', which also has their first ep, 'oh my gawd' and 'telepathic surgery', plus lots of bonus tracks.

"vaseline ah mah toast"?? oh kay. they did a song that went "...she'll make ya toast, but she don't use butter...she uses vaseline...". and yes, they use fake blood. and no, they are not a metal band. but they are crazy. in a GOOD way.

That was the first Flaming Lips songs I'd ever heard. That was before I even liked anything remotely cool. That song was on the radio and I remember thinking it was weird. Now, however many years later, I have 2 of their albums.

(and yes, I'm a big nerd. I don't even have enough friends to have a 4 boombox party!)
It would be cool to mix Zaireeka down to 5.1 and burn it to DVD audio. |

I was bored (except for the Ebb/Glacial debates) and was looking at the past threads and came across this again.
I can't believe its been this long but anyway...

I must have taken your advice and picked up Soft Bulletin. I also got The Jesus Egg, which I wasn't sure what I was getting when I got it. I guess next time I'll read the labels. A lot of repeats on it but different recordings. In a Priest Driven Ambulance and The Mushroom Tapes. I just picked up Clouds Taste Metallic. Enjoying it all.

I've tried to use four cd players ( a computer, a PS2, a CD player and DVD player), but they all get out of sync after a couple of songs. I had three other friends help me. We would que up the discs, pause them, then press play on "three".
Has anyone else tried?

The Soft Bulletin is definitely a great record, but my favorite Lips albums are Clouds Taste Metallic and Transmission From the Satellite Heart. This Here Giraffe makes me smile all the way. You gotta love a song that makes you smile.
I had the Jesus Egg, but I sold it and bought In A Priest Driven Ambulance instead. Demos and outtakes are for diehard fans, which I guess I'm not, judging from this experience.
I've been considering getting the Camper Van Beethoven box set, too. I like Cracker. Do they sound like Cracker? They have common members don't they?
