New to the forum. I love Frank with all of my myocardium. I saw Frank in Boston at the Avalon, second show I have seen the great one. Frank and the Catholics played monkey gone to heaven. This version was very different from the original Pixies version. It was slow, and focused on Franks vocals, very nice indeed. I have seen other forum members have tinkered with the idea of Frank and the Catholics covering some Johnny Cash. Ring of Fire is not a good idea, I heard that song in a Chiles restaurant commercial. Although, Johnny Cash is the best idea of a cover so far in this forum. I know the Pixies covered some Neil already, but with the taste of the Catholics, some Neil would be magnificent along the side of the Catholics. Sorry to ramble, and please excuse my previous message, I was on campus (working on second bachelors), and the computer lab didn't support the website and I could not type the message appropriately. I appreciate everyone's opinions and feel this is a quality site. Look for some more ramblin' from comatose22 in the future. "come on along with the ..." love, comatose22 |

I'd like to hear FB & the C's do "Happiness Is A Warm Gun." It'd be great to hear Frank belt that one out. |

the song "unabomber" by M.I.R.V.
i think frank could pull it off. especially vocally, he has the ability to sing in a gruff monotone. briefly demonstrated in "i've seen your picture"
go for it, frank! |

I know Bush sucks or whatever, maybe I am imperfect or have bad taste, but I actually like some of their songs. And it is cool dude so popular and so rich gives it up to the Pixies. He does NOT have to do that you know. Even if you don't like it, he gives our man recognition, now that's respectable at least. I don't care if you like it or not, the chance of FB covering Bush is less than 0.01% I am sure but give Bush some credit for giving recognition to the greatest songwriter of our generation. How many other people should and don't?

My suggestions: "Who were you thinking of" by the Texas Tornadoes. Funny and another Doug Sahm related song. or I kind of wish he'd redo 1 or two of the pre-pixies demos floating around like: "Keeping in time" or "Fight with Honour". Frank black covering young Black Francis. I like the melodies of those 2 quite a bit. Especially "Keeping in time" even if he changed the lyrics(which isn't nessacarily a must at all to me) the rythem along with his melody and meter works for me. :-D I prefer listening to artists doing overs of more obscure songs so perhaps an old Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash song.( as I think they were both great lyricists, even though I'm not much in to country at all). Or even some Bill Monroe or Ralph Stanely Bluegrass. Something obscure from another "genre" of music (like country) would be cool and it would fit the steel guitar sound they are doing alot of right now... He's visited alot of the 50's and early 60's musicians already in doing Del Shannon, Donnovan ,etc and in referencing others in his own songs. I know I've read he's in to all kinds of stuff including old country. So I'm sure he has many generally obscure songs he covets that would rock if he updated them. The Lyrics are out there for him to put a fun little diamond of a cover song out that of course would sound unmistakably Frank. Though I much prefer Frank's originals to listening to covers, they are always cool little gems to throw in here and there. The best part is when it introduces you to something new, like in the case of Doug Sahm or even Leonard Cohen (as I was in High School when the cover came out) I learned of a new musician for me to go find out about, or in the case of Sister Isabelle a song I was unfamiliar with the particular artist doing. I think he could pull off some Nick Drake stuff beautifully. He made some very cool mellow and melancholy tunes.
Come on it's Frank, we're gonna think it cool if he sings Barney's Theme. "I love you, you love me" LOL

Sorry, man, I just cannot be dissuaded from the stance that Bush suck horrid ass. Shit, Avril Lavigne gave the Pixies props on Letterman or something (from what I heard), and that certainly doesn't make HER music any less shitty! so I guess the Bush guy is just someone who recognizes Frank's greatness but still writes complete crap.
However, I do admire your honesty in admitting that you like some Bush songs. I just personally cannot stomach their "grunge-lite" sound. They are of the same school as Nickelback and all those other retards in my eyes.
Oh yeah--I also remember Gavin Rossdale dissing Chris Cornell (of all people) in a '96 or '97 issue of Guitar World. he said something along the lines of (i'm paraphrasing here) "Soundgarden are a pretty horrible band, and Chris Cornell cannot really sing." Hmmmmmm....let's see here, Soungarden sucking and Cornell not knowing how to sing.....Gavin thinking that his band is the cream of the crop.....it all makes sense now. I'm surprised that dumb prick didn't call Frank Black a "whiny, obscure weirdo" or something. So, I guess, in a round-about, hella fucked up way i'm giving the Bush guy some kind of recognition for recognizing Frank as being great. |

Bush dude may be a fuckin' loser, but he got lucky from a few catchy phrases and a couple simple chords. Nickleback shit and Bush and bands with ultra-immediate-commercial success are always shit upon by underground music snobs. I'm not that way. I love music. Not all of it, but I love how versatile it is. Thus, my fav. act is FB, I've always had a tendency to guitars, screaming, poetry and composure... and passion. So.
Bush dude has written a couple decent songs, that's all I am stating. I don't really give a fuck anyway, I am just admitting a guilty pleasure.
I can write a song above pretty boyz caliber, and I am far more versatile. I suppose There is an art to simplicity.
Call me Imperfect, I think Glycerine has good lyrics, and dude sings them with feeling. It's hash, but that shit tastes good sometimes.
FB being a 10, Bush is a 4.
Cornell can't sing? Pshaw. And Mike Patton has a shitty range...

please don't say such things unless you've heard his music. it's incredibly ignorant. you haven't heard much of him, obviously, because no one in their right mind would say such a thing if they've heard the ridiculously rich and complex vocal palette that guy posesses.

Are Bush still big in the States, thats one British band that we Brits are embarrased about...... what a pile of dogshite. I'd have to agree with him though, Chris Cornell does sound like he's got Micael Jacksons (or Bubbles) finger up his arse.

A) Bush are not as big in the States as they used to be. Thank god for that. And you SHOULD be embarrased of them! For shame, letting lose such a horrid travesty into the world.
B) Chris Cornell is a gifted singer as far as I'm concerned...I realize tastes vary and not everyone will be into his style, but you cannot deny that the man has a voice that is super-human. His range is uncanny.

Wasn't "Wait Till the Midnight Hour" the first song Frank ever played live? Maybe they should record that. I wouldn't mind hearing a Catholics' version of "Under My Thumb" by the Stones or "Drunker Than I Was" by Big Bad Bollocks. |

Hey, do you know who covered "Final Solution"? It was great to finally see Pere Ubu play it live a few years ago. Last year they played their new song "The Fevered Dream of Hernando Desoto" and it was amazing. The album cut is just OK, but the live version provided one of the most intense live moments I ever witnessed. "US 49 wrote... NOT FADE AWAY! NOT FADE AWAY!" Woo! Anyway, I'm off topic and not impressing anyone. Sorry. |

Your friend must be quite the tweaked out individual to be obsessed with a self-lacerating psychotic coprophiliac...I personally never really got into him. Though I have to say it's a little hard not to be oddly fascinated with his insanity and deplorable deeds. |

My mate goes on and on about him, and even wears a GG Allin t shirt. We downloaded a couple of tunes just to see what they were like, and they were pretty awful. He's even named one of his table football players after the man himself, which is a sure sign of his poor sanity.

Frank has generally covered artists from his childhood who are currently not getting the type of recognition they deserve. These are usually geniuses that Frank relates to.
Therefore I am submitting that FB should cover "(I Wanna) Rock With you" or "P.Y.T." by Michael Jackson. I would love to hear FB wrap his falsetto around either of these classics. |

I was just watching Rushmore, and I think that Frank Black could do an amazing cover of you are forgiven by the who. I wouldn't normally vote for such an obvious band, but this song is really good, and I think that Frank could do it justice. |

Battle of New Orleans by J. Horton
In 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin. There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We looked down the river and we seed the British come. And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum. They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring. We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin. There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise If we didn't fire our muskets til we looked 'em in the eye We held our fire til we seed their faces well. then we opened up with squirrel guns And really gave 'em ... well ~~~
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin. There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go. They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em on down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We fired our cannon til the barrel melted down. So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round. We filled his head with cannon balls and powdered his behind and when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.
Hup 2, 3, 4. Sound off 3, 4.... Hup 2, 3, 4. Sound off 3, 4.... Hup 2, 3, 4

Swedish band bob hund made a great cover of final solution a couple years ago, but I won't expect a bunch of anglos to dig into that. Anyway, I dig mr Black's covers of old and nice songs.
Anyone who had a heart (maybe cilla black had the first version? I don't know - a bunch of people have covered it) - should be on his list. |

I wonder if Bush's (the band) fame or fan base suffered at all due to the ascension of George Dubya...and they are terrible.
I second the Replacements and Nick Drake and would like to add Alex Chilton. Are you reading this, Frank? |
