I've been a Pixies fan for a couple years, now I wanna pick up a Frank Black Album. What record is gonna sell me on him?
Joust? No way, even on a good day, maybe Balloon Fight… but barely. |

I would have to assert that chronological is still best. It makes the most sense. Each album, while wildly different, is a natural progression from the last. |

Either "Frank Black," "Teenager of the Year," "Cult of Ray," or "Oddballs." Any other release may be too un-pixieish. Good luck!!

Definitely start with orange. If Los Angeles doesn't sell you, nothing will. Well, except maybe the rest of the album. As Speedy M said, it's a definite progression. |

I would stay away from Oddballs. Speedy is right...go chronologically. Plus the first two albums sound more like the Pixies than the Catholics stuff. |

chronological is a good idea. I don't know what your musical tastes are, but if you like the newer "countryish" stuff, there's nothing wrong with getting DITS or BLD or DW, and of course, be sure to get SMYT next month. |

I never got into the debut that much. I'd say hit Teenager first. There's so many different types of songs on there that it's sure to have something you'd like.

I'd say start with the "Frank Black and the Catholics"-album because it's really, really good. It might not be the most pixies-sounding, but I think it's pretty "easy listened".. |

I agree with omer and I would add that if your fave Pixies reccid is Trompe then Cult of Ray would work for you, along with BLD.
As for SMYT, closest I feel happy with would be Surfer...

Sorry I'm not trying to be awkward (ok I am) but Trompe Le Monde is my fave Pixies record and Cult of Ray and Black Letter Days - though blessed with moments of genius - are my least favourite of FBs solo efforts. I think anyone unaccustomed to FBs solo work would do best to go through the catalogue chronologically. |

I started with COR and Black Sessions, but the first album would be a good place to start I guess, then do it chronologically.... but if you start with COR and like that you are sure to get hooked into the music of Frank Black.
War....... Its not fantastic |

Start with "Teenager of the Year" and "Dog In The Sand" - both the best representations of old Frank/new Frank. Avoid Cult of Ray - even longtime Frank worshippers like myself find it lacking. Everything else is absolutely mint though.
