Frank,

Will the band be playing on the majority of the recent tourdates and, hey, when are you gonna make it back to L.A. to headline? We miss ya.

FB&TC will be playing all the November dates listed. The shows before that are most likely solo.

I put this topic already, but I thought that this location may be better for it...

I e-mailed spinArt records last month and asked them why Frank Black has never done Austin City Limits. They [meaning Brendan Gilmartin - Brendan@spinartrecords.com] replied with
quote:
"I'm not sure ACL would book a band like Frank Black would they? On top of that it's hard to schedule around his tour schedule and their taping schedule."

My view on this is that he [Charles Thompson IV (also known as Black Francis and Frank Black)] mentions individuals whom have preformed on ACL and I feel that he is of most high caliber. In addition, I believe in supply and demand - meaning if we [FB fans] get our word out to him and/or the record co. then they will supply. So, please let me know what you think and maybe 23 Oct 2002I can some how pass it on to FB at one of his shows.

Well I wrote that before I found this "Frank Black Updates" area. Since you answer our questions, can you please reply to the former.

Wow. I do believe ACL would suit FBatC's recent material very well. And the exposure would be wunderbar. I mean, you've got Lyle Lovett and John Prine and even Tom Waits playing the ACL anyway. The Catholics have a good hour or more of ready-made ACL material to boot. At the same time, my impression is that Frank is practically, if not entirely, uninterested in becoming huge or making dough. Maybe I'm just pessimistic right about now, but the material is so accessible that the pop culture would like the music despite its quality.

There are over 200 members and I have only recieved two replies (the other under 'Should FB play Austin City Limits?'). I would really love to see how many of you see my view.

Well now I am satisfied . I was looking at the new ACL lineup a few months back and I asked myself a question...Wouldn't it be the greatest thing if FB&C played this gig....and I was like...yeah!

I'm a huge Austin CL fan. What a great showcase...and you rarely get so up close and personal a view of an artist on such a widely broadcasted medium.
Speaking of Prine and Lovett, I wonder if FB enjoys their music...
Personally, I think our man Frank could cover the hell out of Prine's "Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone" or Lovett's "Simple Song." Thoughts???

I have seen John Prine twice this year - very impressed both times. I would have thought that Frank would love John Prine - how about a cover of All the Best? It relates well to Cold Heart of Stone

Yeah. He could definitely nail any number of Prine songs. I'd say John Prine is one the most coverable artists out there. I play Sabu all the time; actually, I believe I learned to play guitar from John Prine. Probably explains why I only know three chords. But yeah, I bet Frank could really relate to the "Sabu" subject matter especially. "Movie wasn't really doin' so hot" and "Sabu must tour or forever rest." Pixies days like "hey look, ma, here comes the Elephant Boy" and "wonderin' how a man could send a child actor to visit in the land of the wind-chill factor." Ooh ooh. "The airlines lost the elephant's trunk" (the theft) and "they were low on morale but they were high on . . ." And the dumb link to David Lynch's "Elephant Man."

I think he could do a nice cover of "Down By the Side of the Road."

I like Lyle L too, but I don't remember which one is "Simple Song." But the actual song "Road to Ensenada" totally reminds me thematically of "PanAm Highway."

I NEVER thought EVER I'd be able to relate the alterna-rock side of my music preference to the Tejas-country side I like every now and again as some what of a dessert. It's cool that somebody else has the same tastes. Nice quoting on Sabu...what a hell of a song. Simple Song is on Pontiac, from the late 80's, by the way.
Leave it up to Frank Black to bring me full circle.
Damn glad to be here,

Do you also like Chuck Prophet (ex Green on Red)? I saw him earlier this year and he was awesome as well. The first time i saw John Prine this year was at the anti-Landmine concert (with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and Elvis Costello). He only got to play four songs his own/accompanied, but he played Sabu that night.

Lucky head. I saw him as a headliner for like 90 minutes and 25 or so songs, but no Sabu for me! Someday.

Funnily enough, he played for 2 hours after the gig I mentioned, and no Sabu then! He must save it for the short sets.

Wow! A Steve Earle meniton on the Frank Black Forum...again, I never thought I'd see the day. How about this...Prine and Earle duet (back and forth, singing each other's songs, ala B. Joel and E. John) opening up for our man Frank!
I could never listen to a note of music again if that were the last concert I ever saw.

I have seen Steve Earle about seven times (solo, with the Dukes, with Del McCoury) - he has been excellent every time. A special mention must go to his solo set in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections a few months after the death of Townes van Zandt - he played a few very moving tributes (and covers) to Townes. His son also came on and played, resplendent ina Nirvana t-shirt. God, I would love Steve, John P and Frank on the same bill - as long as Frank got top billing!

Frank Black completely fits the mold for a performer who should play ACL. I also sent an email to "harass" the higher ups! C'mon people let's make it happen!!!
