Ok, here's what Frank and the boys played last night (in no particular order- I'm sure this is not complete):
Velvety Out Of State Heloise (Totally ripped) Whiskey In Your Shoes The Black Rider Chip Away Boy Cold Heart Of Stone Black Letter Days Jane The Queen Of Love California Bound How You Went So Far Robert Onion Bullet Hermaphroditos Solid Gold Steak N Sabre Men In Black Freedom Rock Nimrod's Son Wave Of Mutilation Monkey Gone To Heaven
I think he played another Pixies song but to tell you the truth I'm still in a haze. He also played a few new tunes which ripped. My only complaint would be the smelly hippies doin' their little trance dances-Damn they stank! I was hopin' for a bit more off of TOTY but Freedom Rock was masterful. Nice job, Frank!
Cya all at the Northampton show on Friday.

thanks grieves. i had caught the montreal show the night before and he did not play as much new stuff, particularly, velvety, out of state, chip away boy (as you can guess, i wish he had). how was the sound? i found the montreal show so load and distorted i could not hear him singing most of the time! |

Thanks for the review Grieves! So did Frank seem in better spirits than he was at d3's show the night before?

The Bennies were pretty solid overall and Dave Lovering was a blast. Reid Paley must have been a no show or he played before The Bennies because I missed him (I didn't get there until 8:30 or so).
I was over on the right side of the stage and the sound was good although from where I was you really couldn't hear Rich Gilbert too well. It's funny that when Frank introduced the band he called Rich the lead guitarist and Dave Philips a guitarist. It looked to me like Dave had most of the lead duties.
Frank seemed to be in good spirits- there was a pretty damn good crowd at this place. There was his usual fussiness about sound adjustments but that's more than understandable- he likes things to be perfect.
So who's going to Northampton? My friend secured an old cadillac limosine for the night complete with lasers inside- so if you see one pull up at the show say "Hey Grieves!"

I think it's 8:30 on Friday. My tickets are being held at the door so I can't look at them but I wrote 8:30 on this piece of paper so I'll just assume that's when they told me doors would open.

I was leaning on the bar, with a pen and a napkin, so here’s the full setlist, in order:
Frank Black and the Catholics at Higher Ground, Winooski, Vermont Nov. 6, 2002
Set List:
Solid Gold Gouge Away Hermaphroditos I Don’t Know How You Went So Far “There Goes Nadine”, (don’t know this one) “Face of God”, (didn’t know this one either) Whiskey in Your Shoes Cactus Men in Black Black Letter Days Steak ‘n’ Sabre Monkey Gone to Heaven Chip Away Boy Bullet California Bound Nimrod’s Son Robert Onion “Beautiful Day” “don’t care” (or this one, either) Jane, the Queen of Love Heloise Wave of Mutilation
Encores: Cold Heart of Stone Out of State Freedom Rock Velvety Black Rider
High Points: Number one for me was “Monkey Gone to Heaven”, done in a very cool arrangement. No bass or drums, Frank sang, but did not play. The accompaniment was Rich and Dave, both playing the chords on steel. Very “Sleepwalk-esque”. Their arrangement of Joey’s solo section was awesome! They also just totally rocked, especially on Hermaphroditos, Steak ‘n Sabre, Bullet (not usually one of my favorite songs), Whiskey in your Shoes, Velvety, Freedom Rock and Heloise.
The sound was very good from the back. Rich was turned down a little, but everything came out with clarity, including the vocals.
David Lovering was very amusing in his geek persona. Cool choice of 60’s TV music and Led Zeppelin for a soundtrack as he did his amazing feats, like making a pickle glow or blowing HUGE smoke-rings. Even though it was pretty lightweight, he got the crowd’s attention and got them ready for the Catholics.
The Bennies were great. Their songs are excellent and they just slam you with one after another. The guitar player has killer tone. A very cool band.
Reid Paley was a no-show. It was never mentioned.

Thank you, JN, for your documentation. I was trying to remember just just yesterday if they opened w/ Solid Gold, or if I was completly making those glorious opening notes. Anybody remember what he played at Pure Pop? Oh, that new song "it's a beautiful day, it's a horrible day" is the greatest song ever, just in case you didn't realize it. Love, Johnny |
