Check out Spoon's Series of Sneaks. Everyone was raving that they are the new Pixies when they released that album, though I don't think it's quite that black & white. Subsequent albums are awesome but have different and unique sounds.

Picked it up two weeks ago while visiting Philly. I love it!

Also, Wellwater Conspiracy are the absolute shit. Check them out. "Declaration of Conformity" and "Brotherhood of Electric" are just fucking stellar. (especially if you are into that kind of 60's psychedelia-laden garage-sounding rock.)

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and Modest Mouse are probably my favorite two new (for certain values of new) bands. Although I wouldn't call either "the new Pixies", Modest Mouse is very definitely influenced by the Pixies.

Trail of Dead sounds like what would happen if The Who and Sonic Youth had a punk baby. Their live show, especially, kicks more ass than I thought could be kicked. Also, their newest album, Source Tags & Code, is easily my favorite album of 2002.

I agree that alot of music today is pure shite, and Stereophonics are pure fucking shite. I'd go so far as to add Strokes and Oasis to your list of additions. Nothing new and original seems to be coming out, certainly for most of last year anyhow.

The stuff I listen to nowadays is stuff of old, like Neil Young, David Bowie.... I guess being in China limits my chances of hearing new bands so maybe there are some good new bands out here but Ive just not heard them yet.

Broken Social Scene are really quite remarkable. They must be heard to be apreciated. Quite spectacular live as well. I'm not ashamed to say I want rock n' roll.

what about a great old band???
Mogwai....
i bought out "young team" for a listen tonite and remembered the sticker on the front proclaiming "You'd swear you could hear the Pixies weeping into their shredded careers, absolutely certain they never even approached this magnificence" NME

struck me as odd when i bought the damn record and still does....
but it is fucking great.

There was a band called 'One Lady Owner' (now deceased) that most FB and Pixies fans would probably appreciate. There album was called something like 'There's Only We' and the sound could perhaps be described as a hooliganised Pixies...The songs had great titles too, like 'Police Car Sex', 'Planet XXX' and 'I Have Not Been To San Fransisco'. Worth checking out (though the album of the sort that slowly grows on you).

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE LADS! SOME INTERESTING POINTERS, I AGREE THAT TRAIL OF DEAD ARE A TOP BAND IF A BIT MONOTONE. I WOULD SAY THAT SEAFOOD ARE PROBABLY THE CLOSEST TO THE PIXIES IN THE CURRENT MUSIC SCENE, AND AINT HALF BAD EITHER!

Queens of the stoneage maybe

I wouldn't call them the new pixies
but I'm not really waiting for new pixies
Cool bands are cool bands
Nirvana sounds like ''new'' pixies
but I can't say I find them really cool (anymore)

Turnpike are a little known local band from Brisbane, Australia.

I assure you, they're good. They're the only local band I like in a city with a population of over 1 million. They're probably the best band in Australia.

http://www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=9180

Definately not "the next Pixies". But great none the less.

Similar Artists: Fugazi, Modest Mouse, Q and Not U, Sonic Youth, June of 44

Influences: June of 44, Fugazi, Modest Mouse, Don Caballero, Kyuss, Phero Sanders

Not strictly speaking 'new' - but several bands formed in the last 10 years or so are in my opinions very good:

1. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - rought, hard, bluesy, messy, stupid and chaotic. I LOVE IT.

2. Calexico - MExican rythem, + rock'n'roll. pure magic. 'The Crystal Frontier' os one of my favourite songs ever.

3. I AM KLOOT - bizarre British group which is nonetheless one of the most interesting soft rock bands out there.

4. The White Stripes - yeah, they are hyped, but unlike, say, the strokes, the Stripes are actually a really good band.

I have one 'Trail of Dead' album, I think the first one, and I gotta admit I don't really like it.

But seriously....

Hey Englishgeezer-
You've never had it so good! Remember when the Pixies were in their heyday? Remember all that other crap that was called 'music'? You had to search under the biggest rocks for the rarest gems. At least these days so-called 'alternative' bands get airplay, tv time, and you've got the internet to find the smaller bands.
OK I agree that I have yet to find the new Pixies, but then again I never expect to. The Pixies were a new force. There are still a shitload more decent bands making it big now than there ever were before.
More kids of today seem to have better taste, therefore more better bands get further!
Optimistically yours

Bowie's 'Outside' is interesting - that's perhaps the best word to describe it, as I see it he was trying to be awkward and create something that wasn't going to be especially easy to listen to. Scott Walker's 'Tilt' album clearly influenced the sound of the record.

Anyway, for me it's not quite as good as either Earthling or Heathen but it's got definite moments of genius in it: Hello Spaceboy (with the Pet Shop Boys scraped off), I'm Deranged, We Prick you, Motel...

I agree J, but getting others to look past the Interscope fuck-up and no follow up for seven years is hard. If everyone had a copy of the Ultimate Toadies CD they would understand what has been missing for all those "quiet" years.

On the topic of the Toadies, a new band called the Burden Brothers are out now with the singer from the band. Also I think the old drummer from the Rev Horton Heat (a frank Black fav)is in the band.
Another band that I really love is Sleater Kinney and also Sparta. Sparta definitly has some Pixies influence.

Yeah, Sparta's not bad music-wise, but I can't stand the 'singing'. But musically there are some similarities.

The first one is their weakest. Madonna blows it away, and Source Tags & Code (their newest non-EP release) blows Madonna away ... and just about anything else released last year.

Go get Source Tags & Code before deciding you don't like Trail of Dead.

Anyone who likes the noise-ier? side of the pixies mclusky are the way forward. Their last album (mclusky do dallas) was #24 in Pitchforks best of last year. Just thought I'd mention that. There is a topic on here somewhere about them. Whenever I mention song titles everyone gets interested so.....

I like Modest Mouse a lot - I'm pretty pumped to see them on Monday. They are one of my favorite all time bands, "This Is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About" is an amazing album.

I have the Yeah Yeah Yeahs first e.p., and it's pretty good, but the follow up e.p. got really, really bad reviews. They have an new album, which got much better reviews. I'm gonna pick it up one of these days...

I prefer Queens of the Stone Age to Kyuss. I have most of the Kyuss albums, and while they rock, the vocals are a little too 'classic rock' for my taste.

I really like Zen Guerrilla as well. They're a really loud blues/gospal/rock group, and they haven't released an album for a couple of years, but they are really good. Dan Bern is one of my favorite artists right now too. He's a kind of folk, kind of rock, but his lyrics are amazing.

Carolyn-

The fact of the matter is I don't have Kazaa or any similar program...and I haven't been to a record store since your recommendation (I know, i'm a lazy pathetic loser.)

You'll be the first to know when I spin some Kyuss! and that will be next on my list of CDs to buy.

On a tangent, I picked up the DITS w/ the four demo versions on it from Best Buy online (someone had pointed out that they were selling it) and the demos are awesome. I'm very pleased.
