Wallflowers released an album titled "Red letter Days"? Any ideas (or facts) about the dreadfully similar-sounding and close release dates of these album? |

I love Frank...but I recently got to thinking about the title "Black Letter Days" I mean, Red Letter Days is a common phrase..so he titles his album "Black Letter Days" and his name is frank black..does that strike anyone as a bit..er..lame? For the record, he writes about how a black letter day is an ordinary day while a red letter day is a holiday, so I don't think he was going for kitch value, but anyhow. |

No, it doesn't mean "Old Black Dawning" is lame, but if it came from a popular phrase like "Old Yellow Dawning" and he switched it to black, then it would be, ha. It's like how "Good Will Hunting" is about a guy named "Will Hunting". Ozzy does it a lot, throws his name in the title of an album "Ozzmosis"? "Blizzard of Ozz" but he gets away with it because his mind is shot. |

I understand the phrase is common. Don't really believe in randomness.
FB and E. Costello backed a Wallflowers album. I was thinking perhaps this -or some other- incident somehow spoke to some bit of information out there in the world about the similarity. Though, I suppose it is just as well if there are not too many avid Wallflower listeners/followers on the forum.
BLD is definitely not lame. As you say, it has more to do with having to "chip away" in the day-to-day ground, not anything to do with "this is my name, and look what it does to this phrase". I would imagine more of that is going on with Black Rider - but more to the effect that there is a song out there that was made for the persona created by the man.

BLD is laden with a "Black" theme. Frank Black, Black Letter Days, the Black Rider, shit even the color of the cover. It is definitely intentional...I see it as a kind of artistic move. I don't find it lame though, albeit a little blatant. |

you guys are missing the whole point of the title its not him inserting his name in its talking about the days that aren't red letter days, the boring, normal days, the "black" letter days (a red letter day is a holiday or a similar event marked on a calender by red type instead of black)

Frank uses other colors in song titles as well. I'll Be Blue, True Blue, and Big Red. Maybe he should change his name to Frank Blue

I'm not saying that he put "black" in the title as a tribute to his name. I read the interview where he explains the title of the album...I'm just pointing out that it fits into a grander theme as well. |

sheesh, ha, say one slightly negative thing about the man and you're under fire. For the record I was slightly drunk when I posted that so maybe I wasn't clear. I always liked the title, and totally dug the idea of it and the theme for the whole record...it just struck me one day that it could have a lame connatation to it. I know that Frank didn't just title if Black Letter Days to be witty, he had his reasons. Even if his name wasn't Frank Black, the album would probably still be called Black Letter Days, one day I just read it a different way, which happens to me a lot (I remember for the longest time, I thought REM's "Out of Time" was this enigmatic title meaning somehow existing outside of time..till one day I realized that it's also this expression "oops, I ran out of time" and it made the title suddenly seem lame and ordinary. I've since forgotten that realization and gone back to thinking of it the other way (even if i'm probably wrong). |

It's an old debate particularly in physics of whether the world is random or deterministic (if you knew all of the variables) to which Einstein is quoted to have said "God does not play dice". It wasn't a declaration of me believing in god. It was response to you saying you don't believe in random events. Oh, never mind. |

The debate is prior physcics. But, your point is a good one. Particularly to the, err..topic...which I suppose is not compelling or interesting. Not all too familiar with Einstein (in text), but his response seems very similar to many men pre-1600 (Mallenbranche, Leibniz...) To wit, the Wallflowers "response" seems very similar to those (particularly FB) before them (particularly - J. Dylan). No takers...

Are you referring to predestination? I believe in God but not predestination. But I just found it funny that a Darwin(the evolution guy's name is Darwin) was debating God. I think I was high when I wrote that though... |

Perhaps - sorry, no, you're getting it wrong. Einstein's point was NOT about predestination, it was about determination. We may live in an undetermined but predestined world, if God plays dice but cheats.

faceforaudio - I'm sticking to my point, though :-)... Predestination and Determination have very little to do with each other. Just because God plays with dices, it does not mean he doesn't know what the outcome will be. It just means that we won't. |

It is not as lame as "some went back, they couldn't face the black." I am sorry, I love Frank Black but it is a little lame. Shit, I need to start saying some good things soon or I am going to come off all wrong. |

Heres another coincidence besides the one with the Wallflowers. The group Buffalo Tom had an album 'Big Red Letter Day', released in '93. What's more, the 'hit' single was entitled 'Sodajerk,' which immediately reminds me of the lyrics in Franks' song 'Ten percenter.' That was from his self-titled album, which if my memory serves me correct was released around the same time. Another thing is that all the members of Buffalo Tom met when they were going to U-Mass. Holy coincidence. |

Sheamus still meant what he said I think but added the 'just kidding' so everyone wouldn't be pissed off at him. Anyway no matter what he thinks, I still believe there are so many uncreative screen names out there and it's pretty cheesy. Of course you would be an exception PsychicTwin. Yers is an awesome one.

Yeah, it does seem a little lame, in a commical way. I mean, we already know you really like Frank Black - you're posting a Frank Black forum. You don't need to scream it out any more than that :)
It isn't ultimately an issue that I care about though and I don't feel any animosity towards people because of it. It's just something that I find rather amusing. |
