As far as I am aware, no-one has even mentioned this song as yet. I am guessing that it would be one of the first to be dropped from Black Letter Days if a 'Black Letter Days survivor' topic was instigated. Personally, I like it now - I could imagine it being played in folk clubs over here (I like this idea!). Any other views? |

I really like The Farewell Bend. Reminds me of these acoustic songs by Led Zeppelin (Bron-Y-Aur something). The "weakest link" of BLD to me would be Valentine & Garuda.

I like Valentine & Garuda alot. The chords are crazy in that song (once it get's past the C-Am-Em-G part). It's classic Frank Black chord progressing.
Farewell Bend does sound Led Zepeliny. I dig the lead guitar that comes in midway through the song. The effect fits really well.

I like both of those a lot. I think Whispering Weeds is the weakest. |

Farewell Bend is great, does sound like Zeppelin in parts. That lead guitar part has similar tone. |

Matto, I'm not too impressed with Chip Away Boy either. 1826 has some cool riffs. It rocks but is a tad too long in my opinion.

1826 is not too long. It wails and wails and wails. There is a general lack of rocking lead guitar solos on both albums, but this track fills the gap and more. After listen to half of BLD, 1826 is a great (and long) interlude that reminds you that you are still dealing with mister Frank Black Fransis - not just some acoustic folk artist. Great track. The length allows for multiple solos, often two at a time.

1826 rocks in a hard-to-explain kinda way...its rockingness is contained...it's calm but very harsh...it's steady and hypnotic. the riff keeps going and going, rebuilding inside of you till you're ready to explode. on the surface, it doesn't blow the speakers up, but if you really feel it, it'll make your skin tight and your head explode.
whispering weeds is the worst on the album. i feel embarassed just listening to it. i will run after you is much much better on SSMVGD, also. |

Eh, 1826 pretty much bores me. Chip Away Boy is easily one of my faves. Whispering Weeds is also good, but what the hell, Im a pretty big Paul Simon fan (HUGE Simon & Garfunkel fan), and WW sounds totally Paul Simon-ish to my ears.
Also must say that I prefer the new version of "I Will Run After You" as opposed to the SSMVGD version. |

You're all f**king crazy! Whispering Weeds is great, it sounds like the Talking Heads playing acoustic. 1826 is amazing too. Cold Heart Of Stone is a classic. I'm not fond of Chip Away Boy.

I'll add my bit here with regards to 1826, Valentine and Garuda, Whispering Weeds, Cold Heart of Stone and Chip Away Boy:
CAB - At first I didn't like this but after a few listens I began to love it, definately one of the better songs on the album.
CHOS - Great song, liked it from the start, and is one of my most played songs off of the album.
1826 - I agree that it is a little long. Maybe it goes on a little too long before the guitar riffage.... not one of my favourites, but also not a song I dislike.
V&G & WW - Average song. Not Frank at his best
The song that I can say that I dislike on the album is I will run after you... it starts off well but then the second part of the song just doesn't seem to fit together with the first part. Saying that, BLD seems to have different effects on different people. Some people say that End of Miles is not very good, when I reckon it's one of my favourite (top three) FB songs of all time.
But I'd like to see Frank go back to a more rockier style for his next album... although I'll always buy whatever he puts out cos the guys a genius who's not afraid to reinvent himself.
