we all know that frank has done some really great cover versions - my personal fave is the really brilliant tom waits cover on black letter days.

so - i put this question to you all - what cover versions would you love to see frank try on later albums? thinking caps on...

i would personally love to see him do Neil Young's Old Man (a truly beautiful song that would bears homage to some of the greats on BLD), or - maybe - Iggy Pops lust for life. i actually think that would sound great!
what you lot think?
cheers

Personally, I'd love to see F.B. do that all-covers record he was discussing years back, when he was just launching his solo career. I can think of so many possibilities. An Iggy Pop tune (his album "New Values" is a personal fave)? A Wire tune (something off Pink Flag or Chairs Missing)? Definitely a Fall song (maybe Telephone Thing or Big New Prinz). Graham Parker would be an interesting possibility, since I enjoyed F.B.'s version of "Local Girls" with that guy from the Smithereens. A Lou Reed or Velvet Underground song I can definitely imagine (kinda suprised F.B. has never covered Lou). Some Johnny Cash songs---particularly "Highwayman"---seem to beg for an F.B. rendition. Dylan, of course, though F.B. has done a few already; I enjoy Dylan's latest albums myself, and think there's some worthwhile material there. I'd love to hear a cover of a Buzzcocks song; some of F.B.'s songs---particularly Whatever Happened to Pong and Thallasocracy---have that compact, edgy and over-before-you-know-what-happened Buzzcocks quality. I think F.B. has expressed before his admiration for Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto. How about "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells? I better stop while I'm ahead, because my list can go on and on, and some of my suggests are only bound to get more strange.

He should release his version of John the Revelator! I'd love to see him do a Fall track as well - maybe Paintwork or Gut of the Quantifier, or something from Bend Sinister (Realm of Dusk?).

Tenpercenter: i agree. john the revelator sounds great and would be brilliant on an album.

one of the best bits about last years Witnness gig (apart from getting kicked in the head by crowdsurfers of course. bastards.) was his rendition of 'dirty ol' town.' sounded great then - that would be sweet as well.
cheers

Some additions I forgot:
A Clash song (off of London Calling)
A Stones song (though from what I hear one is in the pipeline) Off of Exile on Main Street?
A Ramones song (too many possibilities to name one)
A John Lennon song
And yes, I still stand by this: a Randy Newman song.

Randy Newman? that's the dude who makes the songs for Toy Story and disney flicks right?

He could cover "You've Got a Friend in Me." That would be funny.

"i cant make you love me" bonnie rait
"hopelessly devoted" olivia newton john
"i heard it through the grapevine" marvin gaye
"tiny dancer" elton john

I cover the shit out of frank (props to derek)... so these are my new covers, I'd like to hear Frank...

When I try to cover frank I sound like me... when I cover other people's songs I sound like Frank... it's weird...

I remember the show I was at like DC 1997 or something and frank asked "are there any requests?"... people shouted a bunch of shit and then frank said: "I thought you were going to say Led Zeppelin"... that too could be interesting...

On Randy Newman: Yes, everyone associates him with that, but before he became a movie-scoring ho, he released an impressive series of albums released between the early seventies and mid-eighties; those released in the seventies, in particular, should not be so easily dismissed, and have nothing to do with the kind of material he's producing currently. They incorporate a variety of traditional styles, encompassing an encylopedic grasp of Americana, but with a modern sensibility. Aside from his sardonic wit and story-telling finesse, he's an accomplished musician with one of those distinctive, ragged voices that fits his subject matter as comfortably as an old shoe. Am I overselling him? Maybe. I don't want to sound like a Lexus salesman here, but I think Randy Newman is underappreciated, in part because some younger audience only associate him with the movie work he's been focusing on of late.

Great quote from Randy Newman recently: writing songs has become so much easier now that I have lowered my standards

If you are going to say Iggy Pop.... say "Raw Power".

repeat after me... "Raw Power". Not just the song, any tune on the album will do. And the Caesar knows this himself. true?

good.

Anyone familiar with british Singer/Songwriter and Guitar virtuoso Richard Thompson?

He read somewhere that FB was influenced by his work.

Well I don't know about this, I listen too much to Richard Thompson and Frank Black to give a opinion about a likely influence

But, a Richard Thompson cover, that would really work for me!

Going out on my own strange trip here: James Brown.

I'd love to see Frank cover "Cold Sweat"

Or perhaps some Cat Stevens would be fun to hear - I can kind of picture him doing Matthew & son...

Mother Popcorn by Frank is cool. You've never heard him screaming like this, and the guy sure knows how to scream.

I'm sorry to say I did not enjoy Mother Popcorn...just didn't "get it". I'm sure it makes me culturally dense for saying that.

Another Tom Waits song. I know he just covered one, but the Black Rider? and two of them? Something off Mule Variations would be cool.

I'm still hunting for the CD single of "Dog Gone" with Dylan's "Changing of the Guards" as a B-side. I'll have it one day. Other than that, anything by the Stones. It'd be cool to hear him take a shot at a Warren Zevon tune, too.

I'd love to see FB&TC's do anything that one of the band members has done in a previous band-life. I know this is probably frowned upon, but it would be so cool to see them play one of the songs that Dave Philips co-wrote with Jack Logan in the late 80's-early 90's. Ok boys, if you care to oblige, I'll be at the Philly show! Dave, brush up on 'Love, Not Lunch' just for me!

Mr. Goodman - a Richard Thompson cover by Senor Black would be magnifique! I could imagine him covering Layla, or for that matter, anything off of the I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight album.
