I think it'd be cool to have a definitive list of all the Pixies songs Frank has played solo. So far by my count there have been:
1. Wave of Mutilation 2. Nimrod's Son 3. Holiday Song 4. Where Is My Mind 5. Cactus 6. Velvety (instrumental version) 7. Dancing the Manta Ray 8. Mr. Grieves 9. Crackity Jones 10. Gouge Away 11. Monkey Gone to Heaven 12. Allison
I also think mayb Isla De Encanta?
Definitely more of a focus on the first half of the Pixies' life, but he seems to be easing into the 90's stuff. He likened Subbacultcha to Nimrod's Son and Cactus (both of which he's played live) to being rootsy in an interview recently, so maybe he'll start playing Subbacultcha as well?
I wonder why he plays the older stuff more. You'd think the newer Pixies songs he'd be less sick of. They also resemble his solo recording more. It's also funny that he focuses on Pixies song that are highly definitive of "the pixies" (fast tempos, bouncy bass lines, short running time) instead of more experimental Pixies tunes like "motorway to roswell" and "the happening". |

I once read somewhere that he'd played The Happening. Seemed a bit odd when I read it because its hardly one of the 'greats'. |

hate to sound painfully predictable here but..
"the happening" is a classic. that final, endless rhyming part about driving through Salt Lake.. i think that's some of his most poetic writing.. not even so much for what he's saying, but the way the words sound together. if you sing that part, even though each line is different, it feels like your mouth is making almost the exact same movements.. does that makes sense?
anyway, i'm a fan of happening.. i think it's pretty epic..
but i'm a fan of it all so i'm biased.. |

At one point, in one interview, he said that The Happening was his favorite Pixies song. I'm pretty sure this was post-Pixies, too. |

I read that interview...I actually think it was around the final days of the Pixies existence. Someone told him "everyone talks about Monkey Gone to Heaven, that's not even one of your good songs!" And Frank said "Yeah, i like Wave of Mutilation and The Happening".
The Happening is flawless, brilliant, gorgeous. "It got so crowded in the road i started driving in the sand" is lyrical poetry as its most imaginitive and evocative.
What's teh scoop on Frank's favorite Pixies album? I've heard him say "Bossanova" and "Trompe Le Monde" at different points. But taht was awhile ago. In 1996, when those questions were asked, he was in his Cult of Ray mode, which is stylistically more like the last two Pixies albums than the first three. If i had to guess now though, i'd say his favorite is Doolittle, based on how many songs he plays from that album. It has a punkier western/mexican edge to it, something that crops up on the latter day Cathlics albums on songs like "Bullet". Basically, i think the vibe of the earlier Pixies songs fits into the vibe of his newer stuff more. You couldn't really make "All Over the World" country. |

yeah, i remember him siting Bossanova as his favorite in an interview.. never heard Trompe.. but he could have considered that his fave too..
i think you're right about the earlier stuff fitting in better. i think he's honestly just trying to please the fans, really. playing the "hits"..
i remember after the Pixies broke, on several occasions he said something along the lines of "if i never have to play Monkey Gone To Heaven again I'll be a happy camper".. and it's funny that he's playing that now.. i think it's out of generosity..
some of the stuff he's changed a bit though.. i love the new semi-instrumental verison of Gouge Away..
i do wish he'd switch it up a bit though.. that list is about it. he's almost guaranteed to play Gouge Away, Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, Monkey Gone To Heaven and Mr. Grieves at every show..
but hey, i can't really complain. i'm happy hearing whatever he chooses to play.
i think he could make "the happening" or "ana" fit in somehow.. what else? |

In gouge he said something along the lines of (in reference to trompe being poor) "I wish I hadn't written....no I don't wish I hadn't written them just wished I'd re-written them. Laugh"

"The Happening" is really hard to sing! In the Brixton video he gets through the song just fine but *looks* like he's about to pass out.
I really wish he'd do fewer Pixies songs on stage these days, if only because I think the newer material is so much better. I agree with whoever mentioned "Letter to Memphis", though. Easily my favorite Pixies song. |

I would lover to hear The Happening, defiantely a classic. Personally I am getting tired of the Pixies songs he plays now. I have heard those songs a million times played live. I would love to see him play Planet/the Happening/Hang Wire/Olympus Mons. AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

It IS strange, and would make a good question to FB. Why is he playing so few songs from the FB era (and also from the early Catholics era), and so much early Pixies stuff.
I admit I love the Pixies stuff, but I'd rather have a few Pixies songs in every concert, as a special 'treat' then to have a concert full of them. And I mean those are FRANK BLACK and the catholics shows, not BLACK FRANCIS shows - I wanna hear songs of FB, and TOTY and CoR more then I want to hear tracks of DOOLITTLE. |

I think it is good that he keeps playing a good amount of classics...
Think: when you're first turned on to FB, how? Most likely you hear Where is My Mind or you borrowed someone's Doolittle. Now you see he's touring..ooo. you go and he plays a few choice songs you know and a bunch of other ones. It's a good way to please new fans just boarding. I know when I go, i'll take a few Frank vets, but also some less experienced people who know him for a handful of tracks. It's a good way of pleasing the crowd really. Of course we're not gonna mind if he doesn't play "Where is My Mind", but don't any of you ever bring someone who's unfamiliar and find yourself saying "yeah! he encores with "where is my mind"! it's great" as sort of a way to convince them to come? Then if he doesn't, you feel like an idiot.. |

Well, I thought that he had it just right with the Pistolero tour. 2 Pixies songs. Just enough so that you don't forget where he came from, but still, that the focus should be the FB sogns.
But man, I ain't complaining! |

I tried asking this question on SOME RUMOR... on the main page And now I read this and feel pretty dumb. I hope someone erases that, anyways. . .
My bottom line is Frank can't play long enough. I'd pay 25$ EASY to see JUST frank for 2 1/2, 3 hours of ANYTHING he's done. I'm thrilled he plays them, he should be proud to touch so many people in so many ways. I've seen him once off "cult" and he played no pixies at all. I won't miss another FB show if it's in Austin. Starting yesterday.

I read somewhere that during the DITS tour, Frank was thinking about adding I Bleed to the live set.... which would have been interesting. I agree that Letter To Memphis is one of the coolest Pixies songs, but I'd love to see Frank do Ive been Tired.
At first I was of the opinion that Frank shouldn't play Pixies songs, but now I reckon that he should play whatever he wants as he wrote the songs himself, so he should be able to play them. Obviously its better that there aren't too many songs as it is a FB & C show but its always great to here the old tunes come back during the middle of the set.... especially gouge away. It would be good to see Frank play a different variation of Pixies songs as opposed to the usual ones. Planet of Sound would kick arse live and start a riot in front of the stage, and of course Gouge Away would have to remain.
One question I have is.... As Frank Black is now with the Catholics, does this mean that when he plays a Pixies tune it is classed as a Pixies cover?? |

It could be kinda like when John Fogherty got sued for plagiarizing himself with "Old Man Down the Road." That's when the intellectual property law stuff starts looking a little obsolete.
