They pretty much took the American non-mainstream rock crown from the Pixies, releasing their first album in 1992 and then released 4 more great albums after that. Their sound is kind of a laid back ironic Velvet Underground with influences of numerous 80's classic bands (Pixies, The Fall, Sonic Youth) thrown in as well. Pretty essential stuff. Hip bands out today that wouldn't exist without Pavement: Weezer, The Strokes |

New Malkmus is sort of jammy (in a Television sense, not a Phish sense) and overall a solid album. You'd probably want to start with Pavement though. |

Pavement were one of those great bands I started listening to at around the same time as The Pixies and the Afghan Whigs.
I'd recommend starting with Slanted and Enchanted and follow that up with Brighten The Corners.
I cannot help but feel like Blur's Parklife is a poor imitation of Two States from S & E...
Bloody miss those buggers - not that the new Malkmus is not utterly sublime but you guys know how it is!

I'm just listening to the new Malkmus album and it's pretty good, despite what everyone says. It's just the same story as Frank's, everyone regrets Pavement like they regretted the Pixies.

i love the new malkmus album - in my opinion, pavement only got better with time, and the 2 malkmus releases make me tend to believe that he will too age well...

Wrote this ages ago.... Can't be fucked to read the premis but this might help... Pavement ist Rad..._____________________________________________________________________ Okay, I'm not sure if I want to get into the cooler or not cooler debate, but, ultimately I think the Pixies and Pavement are almost the same band for several reasons and because of this they are two of the most important bands to record in recent memory.
On the hard side there are the Pixies who spawned the flannel revolution. On the lighter, more exparamental, side are Pavement who gave rise to Psudo-Intellectual Alternative (don't get me wrong Pavement can rock)...
There really isn't a point in getting into the whole "look how influencial the Pixies are debate" because there are several threads which say this all over the site. The Pixies did their thing and created their own style which was picked up and simulated by other groups... Therefore, in other band's sounds the sound of the Pixies is already present and the course of music has benefitted through this influence.
As for pavement, they pretty much did the same thing but in a different genra/style of music and I think they are just as influencial on several levels because of this.
Pavement is more lo-fi and poppy than the Pixies... their lyrical constructions are different than the pixies. Their sound completely different than the Pixies (interestingly enough Pavement were using Petal Steel on Wowee Zowee- 95) and unique to themselves (also like to mention the two drummer thing... brilliant). Imagine the other less Rocking side of alternative without Pavement? Would there be a Weezer(I would argue weezer is Pavement's Nirvana)?
Thus, if you look to the curent state of "Alternative Music" (as if there still is an Alternative Music...or ever was) I think there are two bands that paved the way for the others which followed... The Pixies and Pavement. They didn't pave the road through commercial sucess but rather by changing the demension of the game and sounds found in the rehlm of music. This inspiration and excellent ability to make interesting music promted others to take suit.
Music has sounded better and our hair has been smaller ever since.
So, I guess I look at them as two sides of the modern musical coin... and while you might identify with one side more, and think they are cooler because of it, you can't detract from the influnce of the other side... For me, this is where much of the value of the Pixies and Pavement reside... two amazing bands that did amamzing things...
If you made it through this huge post thanks... sorry if it is riddled with spelling errors (I know it is). Have though writing on this posit for a while and glad I finally did.
Take Care
Mike
