The poll, conducted for the first time in ten years, saw the Pixies' 'Doolittle' LP, also released in 1989, come in at Number Two. The 1993 winner of the poll, 'Pet Sounds' by The Beach Boys, is at Number Three this time.
1. The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses' 2. Pixies 'Doolittle' 3. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' 4. Television 'Marquee Moon' 5. The Beatles 'Revolver' 6. Love 'Forever Changes' 7. The Strokes 'Is This it' 8. The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead' 9.The Velvet Underground 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' 10. The Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollocks...'

P.S. staff writers for NME masturbate to bands that record a great debut album then record a not as good followup only to disband later. |

Someone posted this a long time ago. Marcus, I wholeheartedly agree. Pet Sounds is the best album ever. |

What are the Strokes doing on that list?? I really have nothing against them, their album is a cool catchy 70's New York punk/Pavementy thing, worth owning, but honestly (and I don't meant to incite a Strokes bashing fest). It just seems to discredit the other albums on there. |

Is this a best rock album poll? the STONE ROSES? If so, where's Appetite for Destruction, or Raw Power????? (I could list a zillion others to replace them) the stone roses suck....Pet Sounds, VU + Nico, Revolver, Smiths, sex pistols, pixies...all of these are better than the stone roses. wtf. and how about the strokes! they are too green to be on a list of such distinguished albums! NME can lick it! |

Remember this is an NME POLL - that means that it's made up of people's opinions, and not a broad swathe of the population, but people who read the NME (or write for the NME, don't know which). So you're lucky the new Linkin Pork album isn't number fookin one.
The NME is a bag of shite now - they haven't reviewed a Frank Black album since Cult of Ray, and the paper has progressively become smaller, thinner, more colourful, with fewer, shorter articles, more pish like "what's Kelly Osbornes ringtone". Las time I bought it was about 2 years ago (the Gorrillaz issue) and I was so embarrassed at it looking like a fucking power rangers fanclub newsletter that I had to hide it inside a copy of Pregnant Asian Housewives to prevent my embarrassment as I took it to the counter.
The only albums that deserve to be in the top 10 are the Roses, the Pixies and the Pistols. As for the Smiths, their Best Of is much better than any of their albums, but I suppose you're not allowed Best Ofs in top album lists.
The NME is shite these days, it's all new metal and shite bandwagon-jumpers like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, no wonder Kerrang outsells it now.

If this is a best of, where are Nevermind, Definitely Maybe, Blonde on Blonde, Psychocandy, Ease Down The Road, It's A Wonderful Life, Teenager of the Year, Tigermilk, Fuzzy, Proxima Estacion Esperanza, Automatic, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness or Moondance? What is pish like Revolver and the Velvet Underground doing in there?

I was glad and pretty impressed to find Love on that list. At least they did SOMETHING right. |

Yeah I suppose looking at their whole ouvre, what they did and when they did it the Beatles and the VU are better than Oasis. But I find most VU stuff sounds like a bunch of junkies throwing their violas down a Noo Yoik fire escape; and the Beatles are so twee they make my teeth hurt. Definitely Maybe on the other hand - the whole of Oasis's career has rested on the fact that people will buy any shite they put out just because Definitely Maybe was so good.
I've never heard any Television or Love tunes - are they any good or are they "good" in the same way as the Velvet Underground are "good"?

Love - ok, if you love Hendrix, you will hear everything that even inspired Hendrix in Love material. Jimi actually cited love as a huge influence on his playing and his music. Think of really excellent 60's psychedelic rock. that's Love. not really comparable to VU at all
Television - what you have here is raw, old school NYC punk rock (circa early 70's) but without a disdain for guitar solos. think the rawness/vocal thrashiness of punk rock, but with very inspring leadwork from both guitarists in the band. a truly unique hybrid of 60's guitarwork and early 70's punkrock attitude (speaking very generally here.)
i'm drunk and a little blazed, so if this whole tirade doesn't flow too well, you know why

It flows just fine - so fine I'm going to get some Love and Television stuff next time paw goes to market. Any suggestions as to which are the best albums (or should I get Forever Changes and Marquee Moon as the poll suggests?).

Yeah, Forever Changes and Marquee Moon are the way to go. I must say, I don't see much alike in Jimi Hendrix and Love though(?). But still get Love anyway.
P.S. How does Revolver sound like PHISH?? |

yeah, Itchload is right...for a first foray into either I would get those aforementioned records.
Itch- the guy in Love (I forget his name) sings a lot like Hendrix, just more on key...at least in my opinion. and there are definite parallels in some of the guitarwork. but Love is a little more...grounded. You get less of that dipped-in-a-bucket-of-LSD vibe. |

2. Pixies 'Doolittle' 3. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' 4. Television 'Marquee Moon' 5. The Beatles 'Revolver'
9.The Velvet Underground 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'
these ones are the only ones that deserve a top ten placing. a couple of others i like such as the sex pistols and the strokes but those albums in no way warrent a top ten spot for an alltime list. even revolver is give or take but its probably my fave beatles album

Yeah, I agree with Lou about which ones deserve to be on there. They failed to take into context that stuff like The Stone Roses doesn't really carry as much impact/blissful nostalgia over the world than it does in Manchester, and if you really want to represent the great Manchester music, you would probably want to go the Joy Division route (or The Fall but they're not as universally appealable either). |

I totally disagree with you people who don't think the Stone Roses should be on that list. It might not be as good as Doolittle but it's better than anything else ever released. As for representing great Manchester music, I don't think you could lump the Fall, Joy Division, Smiths and Stone Roses into a category just because they share a postcode. I guess it depends what kind of music you like - I wouldn't expect somebody who likes the Velvet Underground to rate the Stone Roses, or vice versa.
Glaring ommissions from the NME top 10 are Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches by the Happy Mondays, Nevermind, Psychocandy by the Jesus and Mary Chain and Definitely Maybe by Oasis.
