You really sound a like a Leitrim person I know!!!! Stay in school and don't do drugs!, until you go to college that is! I started listening to the Pixies in 2nd year and they were my special secret band cause they went on about incest and aliens and everything else weird and wonderful in the world, so, I got over that along time ago!

The first time I listened to it I had shunned all non-classical modern music (still liked stuff from the 60's, 70's, even some from the 80's) since I assumed at my young and oh-so-naive age that only the "best" stuff got played on the radio. A friend I met in school gave me a compilation of a bunch of Pixies songs and I heard songs like Cactus and moreover, Ed is Dead, and I was thinking, what the #$^#$#, this guy is psycho. Plus I had all these negative heacy-metal connotations associated with any kind of screaming. And then I was telling someone else about Ed is Dead and we were kind of joking about the lyrics a bit and I suddenly realized, "Hey, this is actually sort of funny. He's not a psycho, he just 'plays' one in this song." I guess singing is kind of like acting.
And that little relevation blew away all my unfortunate sterotypes from years of radio trash, and brought the Pixies and Frank Black up to a three-way tie for first place in my all-time favourite musicians list (the other musician being John Williams). Plus there were a few songs like Velouria, Motorway to Roswell, and Where Is My Mind which were a little more accessible even the first time and continued to get more bleeping awesome every time I played them (and still do so).
I don't care what Frank says, his music IS caviar for the brain or at least soup for the soul. But not chicken soup, that'd be wrong. |

its pretty frustraiting when friends dont understand why the pixies are so good. i mean everyone of their songs is really catchy and interesting, you just cant go wrong with them really. their loss i guess.

I can honestly say that I've never met someone who didn't like the Pixies or Frank when I played it for them. Never, and I've done that a lot of times. And usually they're people who aren't huge music obsessives (because if they were, they'd already know him). Sometimes it takes a few listens I guess, but I'm talking well over 20 people (guys and girls with all different types of music taste. One person likes mostly rap. One person--no lie, his favorite artist was Mariah Carey and now it's Frank Black), that's a pretty high batting average. |

Almost no one that I play them for likes them. I think for the Pixies it's mainly the name of the band that turns them off and then most kids my age just don't like the way frank sounds. My brother is finally starting to like the Pixies but still doesn't like frank black |

I bring Death To The Pixies to a little drunken gathering of friends. 2 years later, one of those friends is big fan, interviewed Frank for his uni radio station and got me his autograph. Back of the net. |

Its so weird playing a song/band that I hold so dear and for that person to say nah its ok. I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't like Where is my mind?
I was sat in my g/f's living room and her friend was looking at the badges on my bag she said how great crackout are and then when she saw the pixies she just said ugh. No explanation just ugh. I immediately stop speaking to her and repeatedly kicked her in the face. I write this from prison.
People are stupid. |

My girlfriend happens to have picked-up well to the PIXIES. I think it is the right song thing. I can't not play FB or the PIXIES and she just got hooked on Llano del Rio (to the end that it was played 4-5 times when it caught her attention). Then, after some more FB music (TOTY is the one that all of my non-FB-inspired friends/family catch on to - my mom loves the album) we went to the shows and she started loving the pixies songs. She can't get enough of it now.
I'm pretty skeptical about anyone who doesn't like something on a first listening. But, if someone can come to like the MAN or the BAND, then salud. If they can't, you may have to reconsider the worthiness of their existence, or just deal with it.

I turned my (now ex-) girlfriend onto Frank Black and the Pixies. First exposure - a reaction along the lines of "eghhh, what is this crap?" and a grimace. A few months later - she is either listening to Surfer Rosa or Dog in the Sand every time we ride in her car!
Then....she breaks up with me, shattering my pathetic heart into pieces, and she gets to keep Frank and the Pixies!!! I wonder who made it out on top in that fucked up little trade off |

I had a great experience introducing Doolitle to a bunch of shocked friends. This girl whose birthday it was told me to "get her into some other music" (this meant besides Destiny's Child), and I gave it to her and she put it on. Wow. Only one guy recognized it, but "Yeah, I just think Where is my mind is the only really good pixies song. Yeah. It's at the end of Fight Club. Yeah." Maybe I need new friends, no?

new friends, yes.
Unless you can accept the fact that your friends listen to Destiny's child.
